Sorry for the rant, but all the bs I've been dealing with in the last week or so trying to sell my TV, as well as all the experiences I've had in the past, have left a real sour taste in my mouth in regards to Craigslist.
I put my TV (a 43" Samsung plasma 720p TV) up for sale about a week ago. Within 10-12 hours, I got a response from someone offering well below I wanted, even though I clearly specified in my listing that the price was not negotiable. Now bear in mind that I originally paid $350 for a TV that's only a couple months old and barely has any usage. I set my asking price to $250. A VERY reasonable price considering how new it is and how little I've used it. He offered me $180 and I told him no thanks, because I was staying firm at my price.
That same day, I got a message from another interested buyer. He was originally going to meet up with me the same day, but then had to reschedule for the following day. I was a little annoyed, but overall, not a big deal.
The next day when he came over, he asked me a lot of questions that I already answered in my posting. He spent 10 minutes inspecting the TV (I guess he was looking for any reason he could to lowball me on price, but that wasn't happening). After he looked it over, he asked me if it was a plasma, to which I replied yes (again, this was in my posting!). I then started telling him the benefits of owning a plasma over an LCD (I wasn't trying to be a scummy salesman. I've done my research and I truly believe that for a number of reasons that plasma is better than LCD), but I could tell his mind was already made up. He started making a bunch of excuses, saying that he had to talk it over with his wife and that his vehicle couldn't fit my TV because it had a bunch of his kids stuff in it (thanks for wasting my time!) He then said that he could MAYBE pick it up the following day.
Later that night, I messaged him saying that if he didn't pick it up the next day that I was going to sell to someone else. To which he responded that he already bought a new TV.
To all you people who use Craigslist on a regular basis and have to deal with these kind of wishy washy people, I really do admire your patience. But goddamn, I must say, it is pretty fucking irritating.
From all the experiences I've had with Craigslist, this tends to be the norm, I'm either dealing with people who either a) speak very limited English b) are trying to lowball me on price every step of the way c) only come over to inspect what I have and either never come back or wait a week to try and get a lower price or d) ask me questions I already answered in my posting.
I know I'm probably coming off as a little dickish in this post, but I just needed to vent. I've had some successful transactions on Craigslist, but the successful ones I've had are way outnumbered by the unsuccessful ones with people who just want to waste my time.
If I want to pay anywhere near full price for something, there is a wonderful store called Amazon.
Of course I'm going to low-ball you on Craigslist. I have literally nothing to lose. Sometimes people just want to get rid of something, sometimes they don't care, sometimes they say no. That's totally fine. It's Craigslist.
180 is totally reasonable for a used plasma you bought new for $300.
If you don't want to sell it for less, don't. People lowball me all the time on my stuff. If I don't care, I'll sell it to them, if I do, I say no thanks - or counter offer with something reasonable.
Anyone who says their price is "firm" on Craigslist is a joke. Nothing is firm on Craigslist. That's the wonder of it.
"The price is firm" is the easily one of the most infuriating things I see on Craigslist.
Followed by "Only serious buyers should reply", what kind of non-serious buyers are you expecting to get?
Which is right behind the worst of all "No low-ballers". People are going to give you what ever offers they want, stop wasting time typing it and wasting my time reading it.
Let me give you the point of view from someone that was recently looking for a TV. Your price was too high. Most people realized that they could purchase a new TV with the same specs for about $300 which is why they backed off. So many people in my area post "I paid ??? brand new… so $$$$ is a deal" but when it comes down to used electronics (especially TVs) they are better off making a new purchase and grabbing the extended warranty. When you chase top dollar on Craigslist, you will deal with the wishy washy crowd.
On top of what everyone else is saying, it's not reasonable to expect people to show up and not 'hum and haw' over your product... sure you described it, but seeing in person is an integral part of the decision-- purchases of this amount are often a big deal for folks.
I hum and haw over everything I buy, new or not, and this is part of why Craigslist doesn't really work for me for buying stuff, because it's awkward as all hell being in some impatient dude's house having him all up in my thing while I try to think it through. Too much pressure with the competing needs and subjective value judgments on both sides.
I've run into this a lot lately, if I get there and the product is not as described I'm not buying it. So I always try to tell people that I am coming to look at it and IF I LIKE IT/IT FITS THE DESCRIPTION then we're golden. I've been looking for a dog lately. Go to one guys house to meet dog described as friendly and calm. Dog did nothing but howl at the top if her lungs and run away from me. I said I didn't think it was a good fit and left. Got a bunch of text messages cussing me out for wasting his time!
From my experience, selling in the electronics section of craigslist is a mess. You either get scammers, wishy-washy people, lowballers, ridiculous trade-ers, and people that just don't text you back. I had to sell two droid ones a few weeks ago and I ended up having some crazy lady sending me 46 calls and 21 texts AFTER I told her they were sold. Its a fucked up place on Craigslist, tread lightly there.
The price haggling I'm fine with. Even low balling. What I find utterly irritating is people that will meet up with you, but bring less than the agreed upon cash amount and expect you to settle.
I tried to sell an iPhone 4S awhile back. I got mostly the Google Voice scammers, and then this woman calls and says she wants it and is good with my $150 ask. We confirmed this on the phone AND in texts. So we meet at the food court of the mall here, she looks it over, then pulls $90 out of her purse. She acts all surprised then changes gears to start a sob story about her boyfriend breaking her old phone and she can't afford $150. When I said no she called me an asshole and stormed off.
Fuck these people. I will deal with any amount of calls or texts, but organizing a meetup and flaking IS a waste of time.

I've found that I will only schedule a time to show something when I already know I will just be chilling at home and have no place to be, that way I am not inconvenienced by them ghosting on me.
When the site works, it works well. When it doesn't you have you just understand that you are dealing with some ignorant people at times.

That's not true at all, they just know that if you're selling it on Craigslist then you're looking to get rid of it and too lazy to try and sell it online to a wider audience. If you're not willing to sell to the full market, don't expect to get 150% of what it's going for on Amazon.

But I totally agree with you here, but ironically enough this has never happened to me.
Not showing up drives me crazy. Had someone a couple weeks ago agree to meet at QT at 1 pm. At exactly 1 pm I get a text claiming car trouble and asking me to deliver to their work. I did it but when I got their it was obvious their car was fine, they were just too lazy to drive the 5 blocks.
Another appt (me as buyer) set for 2 pm. At 2 she texts me that's she's busy and I should come back at 2:30-I was already in her driveway.
Worst though was when we finally found a dog we loved. Had many convos, met the dog, set an appt to go get her the next night. About an hour before the kids and I went to pick her up the wife decided that seeing us with the dog "made her jealous" and told us she decided to keep her. That bitch wasted so much of my time and absolutely crushed my kids.
If you're talking about people overcharging for a used TV that they are trying to sell on Craigslist then I 100% agree.
I'm not sure if there's a market for TVs below 1080p
My only experience selling on Craigslist has been items that I would have thrown away if no one bought them... I assumed that's what everyone else was doing as well. Pretty much just a garbage pail that gives me a few bucks back. Prices are not firm- it's basically an online flea market & you're lucky to get whatever you get, because it's more than what you had.
In some cases I think you're right, but I've sold thousands of dollars worth of nice items.
Also, it's a great place to set up trades!
I've had amazing luck on craigslist because I'm firm and to the point.
A lot of the issues mentioned in the OP, and the replies can be prevented with a mix of friendliness and respectful but assertive communication. Remember too that if someone is paying gas to come out to your place, they are the ones invested (time and money for gas) at that point. I've dealt with a lot of folks and sure you get the occasional no show, and someone lowballing you at the last minute, but that is the exception in my experience. To avoid no shows, just be sure to communicate with the person right before they come, ask them to call you when they are coming over, so you know for sure they are coming. You can usually tell how the person is going to be during negotiation, in their way of communicating with you. Always ask for a little more than you expect to get, so that when they make an offer, you counter-offer the price you actually want. Then you both walk away feeling like you got what you wanted.
Try Obot! It's a new way to buy and sell stuff that eliminates the hassles of craigslist and other online classifieds.
I just recently completed the sale of "super mario 3d world" I started at about $50 when I listed it 6 months ago :) I dropped it to $40 eventually and then held firm at $35 and finally $30.. many people were upset and refused to buy cause I didn't have a case.. why did that matter?
I had one person who had cash but was $5 off and another weird one told me he could buy it new for $40 at walmart.. hmm not so sure? but I did complete the sale.. patience really is required for CG and yah.. it is full of idiots.. there is no doubt.. "learning to manifest" helps :)
I'm not 100% sure what the value of super mario 3d world is..?? I believe it's $30-35 ebay basic auction pricing.. I run all my 'known' values based on ebay mostly.. (mostly) there is a possibility "at times" to get more than ebay basic pricing..
But in my observance most of the sellers pricing is also outrageously expensive.. if you are for example buying a USED HDTV on craigslist don't bother in my market.. you'll get a better deal buying 'new' every time.. the prices are way over ebay auction prices or brand new prices..
