Biderman's chart of coercion is a tool designed to explain methods for torturing prisoners of war. It has been applied to explain the coercive techniques used by perpetrators of domestic abuse.
TORTURE METHOD 1: DEMONSTRATING OMNIPOTENCE
(a) EFFECT AND PURPOSE: Suggests futility of resistance.
(b) VARIANTS: Confrontation. Showing complete control over victim’s face.
TORTURE METHOD 2: FORCING TRIVIAL DEMANDS
(a) EFFECT AND PURPOSE: Develops habit of compliance.
(b) VARIANTS: Enforcement of ‘rules’.
TORTURE METHOD 3: MONOPOLIZATION OF PERCEPTION
(a) EFFECT AND PURPOSE: Fixes attention upon immediate predicament. Eliminates information not in compliance with demands. Punishes independence and /or resistance.
(b) VARIANTS: Physical isolation. Darkness or Bright light. Restricted movement. Monotonous Food.
TORTURE METHOD 4: HUMILIATION AND DEGRADATION
(a) EFFECT AND PURPOSE: Makes resistance more ‘costly’ than compliance. ‘Animal Level’ concerns.
(b) VARIANTS: Personal hygiene prevented. Demeaning Punishments. Insults and taunts. Denial of Privacy.
TORTURE METHOD 5: ISOLATION
(a) EFFECT AND PURPOSE: Deprives victim of all social support of their ability to resist. Develops an intense concern with self (this could be home environment). Makes victim dependent.
(b) VARIANTS: Complete solitary confinement. Complete or partial isolation. Group Isolation.
TORTURE METHOD 6: EXHAUSTION
(a) EFFECT AND PURPOSE: Weakens mental and physical ability to resist.
(b) VARIANTS: Semi-Starvation. Sleep deprivation. Prolonged interrogation. Overexertion.
TORTURE METHOD 7: THREATS
(a) EFFECT AND PURPOSE: Creates anxiety and despair. Outlines cost of non-compliance.
(b) VARIANTS: Threats to kill. Threats of abandonment/nonreturn. Threats against family. Vague Threats. Mysterious changes of treatment.
TORTURE METHOD 8: OCCASIONAL INDULGENCES
(a) EFFECT AND PURPOSE: Positive motivation for compliance. Hinders adjustment to deprivation.
(b) VARIANTS: Occasional favours. Rewards for partial compliance. Promises.
