Tempcover, who carried out the research, also discovered that 45 per cent of us regularly steam up the windows in a bid to rev up our sex lives.
Nookie in the car isn't illegal in the UK, providing you are not "outraging public decency" by getting it on in a very public place.
Even so, the possibility of getting caught seems to add a special thrill to seekers of in-car entertainment.
Here, four Sun readers reveal why they are fans of the ‘car-ma sutra!’

Jackie Gilbert, 59, is a senior carer and married to Rob, 56, and lives in High Wycombe. He refurbishes bathrooms and kitchens. They have four sons aged 28-33.
Jackie says: "When I first met Rob it was difficult having sex. He lived at home with his parents and I was still living with my then boyfriend in a house we’d bought together.
"Even though Rob is 6ft 3in tall, one night we thought sod it - let's try and do it in his car.
"It was an old-school Mini. We managed to get onto the back seat together.
"We joked about who was going on the bottom. It was hilarious trying to work out how to have sex - but we managed it somehow. It involved opening the windows too.
"It is always me who instigates this sort of thing.
"Even today we’ve got four sons and one of them lives at home with us. We don’t do it while he is in the house.
"One time he walked into the bedroom and caught us in bed and asked what was going on.
"Instead, if I’m feeling amorous, I’ll say to Rob, ‘Let’s go to the shops!’ It is my code for let's have sex in the car.
"He is a bit more innocent than me and if we haven’t done it for a while will usually ask, ‘Why, what do we need?'
"We usually end up having to pick up cigarettes for one of our sons but it’s worth it.
"Nowadays I don’t have to cram myself into a Mini either - I’ve got a very comfy Nissan Patrol which means I get to have sex in style!"
Spanish teacher Vanesa Domene, 37, lives with her partner. They have an eleven-month-old son and live in Colchester.
Vanesa says: "Like many teenagers, I had my formative sexual experiences in a car.
"I was a university student, dating my first love and we’d been seeing each other since we were 16.
"We were both living at home and didn’t have anywhere to go to be intimate.
"But that all changed when my boyfriend got his first car. It was a very roomy Vauxhall Vestra!
"Fortunately I’m quite petite and we didn’t even need to push the seats back to get comfortable.
"We used to go to deserted industrial areas at weekends to have sex in his car.
"One evening we were outside a factory which was closed and there was no one round to interrupt us.
"It was dark outside and I wasn’t worried about being caught. I’d usually wear a dress for ease.
"I was straddling my boyfriend, totally lost in the moment, when there was a knock on the window and this massive light was shining at me.
"It was a security guard doing his rounds and, with a powerful torch, he could see exactly what we were up to.
"My boyfriend put the window down and the guard said, ‘I am not going to ask what are you doing here, but you need to leave this place now!’
"I wanted to die. It was the most embarrassing moment of my life, but there was worse to come.
"A week later, I was sitting in a lecture when I saw the security guard.
"I know he recognised me because he did a double take and smiled at me. It was then I found out he was also doing a business studies degree and was in all my classes. Talk about cringey.
"I was so scared he was going to say something to the rest of students about what he saw me doing.
"Thankfully it never came up over the three-year degree course. He was a nice guy."
What's likely to happen if you're caught having sex in your car :
Engineer Maurice Garbutt, 53, is married with one daughter and four grandchildren. He lives in Hunmanby, Yorks.
Maurice says: "My wife has a high sex drive and loves to do it outside at any opportunity.
"On holiday in the tropics or the Med is fine – we always find a deserted cove or do it in the sea.
"The same can’t be said for Yorkshire. It’s why we often end up doing it in my car.
"One winter night we went to a well-known local country park.
"It opens out on to the beach and its where loads of kids go too but at that time it was deserted and, knowing we’d have the place to ourselves, we went for it.
"I got distracted when I saw a red light coming towards the car. I thought it was a UFO or something.
"We panicked and it was only after it passed I realised it was a runner emblazoned with flashing red lights.
"By then I’d got out of the car to see what it was. My wife had too.
"It was that windy we couldn’t close the car door. The door blew out of my wife’s hands and bent in the middle.
"I went mad but my wife was standing there with her knickers down around her ankles, laughing her head off.
"In the end I saw the funny side and we drove home with the door hanging off.
"The most recent – and final time – we had sex in the car was a couple of villages away.
"We drove down the local ‘lovers' lane’ after a night out. We both fell asleep after sex.
"We woke up with a copper knocking on the window asking, ‘what are you doing here?’ Luckily, he let us off with a warning.
"Never again – I’m a granddad. I’m too old for this!"
Reiki practitioner Rebecca Barker, 38, is married and has three kids. She lives in Tadcaster, Yorks.
Rebecca says: "I’m no stranger to having sex in the back of a car. It’s what you do when you can’t get any privacy.
"I did it when I was in my teens and then also in my 20s with my youngest’s dad. There were kids at home, parents at his. It’s easier.
"The most special moment for me was when I met my husband. We had sex in his car on our first date.
"I’d known him for years and we’d been friends for ages before he asked me out. I was dead excited and we had a magical evening.
"He had driven and, when we got in his car, he went to drive to his house and I stopped him.
"I was nervous and I wasn’t up for giving out at his place after our first date so he drove me home.
"But before we got to mine he took a detour down a deserted lane.
"It was a November evening so pitch black outside. We started kissing and one thing led to another - before I knew we were having sex anyway.
"The sex was amazing but, because we were in a Peugeot 406 coupe, it was dead uncomfortable.
"We were wedged in the front seat together and spent most of that first time giggling.
"It did the job though because we were a couple after that and we got married a year ago!"

An appalled Hong Kong hotel guest captured the scandalous moment two shameless couples decided to get jiggy with it in the facility’s jacuzzis. A video of their hot tub hanky-panky session is blowing up online.
“I did not expect to see people doing this when I stood on my balcony,” the unnamed videographer told Viral Press of the lecherous quartet’s aquatic romp. The NSFW double date went down July 1 in a high-rise hotel room in the North Point area of the Vertical City.
The steamy 35-second clip, filmed from the cameraman’s veranda, shows an unidentified man performing a randy sex act on a woman in an open-air hot tub a floor below in full view and earshot of the surrounding rooms. In both shots, the woman is seen enjoying a bowl of noodles, bringing a whole new meaning to “send noods.”
The footage then zooms in on the second pair of lovebirds, who are seen having intercourse in another — thankfully enclosed — hot tub like a scene out of the Playboy Bunny Ranch. If that wasn’t bad enough, families can be seen splashing about on the ground floor, apparently oblivious to the salacious antics transpiring above.
Needless to say, the hotel horndogs could apparently face serious jail time for their whirlpool romance.
Hong Kong lawyer Albert Luk Wai-hung told local media that public sex is illegal.
“A person who, without lawful authority or excuse, in any public place or in view of the public, indecently exposes any part of his body, shall be guilty of an offense and shall be liable on conviction of a fine and imprisonment for up to six months,” he said.
Unfortunately, the official said the videographer could also be penalized for filming the sordid display: “Further to this rule, the video taker may have also violated the Control of Obscene and Indecent Articles Ordinance and could be duly punished.”
However, the cameraman maintains that he had filmed the couple as a favor to law enforcement.
“‘The rooms were not private,” he insisted. “They were aware that other hotel guests could see them. This is why I recorded their inappropriate behavior.”
This isn’t the first public sex display to make the rounds of late. In May, a UK couple took their love life to new heights while having sex on a cliff in full view of restaurant diners .
