A husband and wife had a "threesome" with an under-age member of their Perth church youth group, believing she was over 16, a court has been told.
Peter Alexander Lowenstein, 31, of Rockingham, is facing 25 charges relating to a number of sexual encounters he allegedly had with a girl who cannot be named, initially aged 14, between March 2000 and August 2001.
His now-estranged wife, Noelene Grundy, 27, of Hillman, is facing seven charges relating to a single encounter in which she and Lowenstein both had sex with the girl in their marital bed.
They have pleaded not guilty to all the charges.
During his opening address to the West Australian District Court in Perth today, Prosecutor Alan Troy said the couple, then aged 26 and 22, met the girl at a church youth group they helped run in Rockingham, south of Perth, in 1999.
Lowenstein began courting the girl by telling her that her then boyfriend was "not right" for her and that she "looked sexy" in a bathing suit she wore while swimming at a youth group camp, Mr Troy said.
In about March or April 2000, Lowenstein invited her to his house and had sex with her for the first time.
"What then occurred over the next one-and-a-half years or so were a number of incidents which gave rise (to these charges)," Mr Troy told the court.
The pair met several times and had sex at Lowenstein's home and in his car, he said.
The girl had few friends and suffered from poor self esteem, he said.
"At that time it seemed to (her) that he was the only person that she could talk to," Mr Troy said.
In about April or May 2001 Lowenstein convinced his wife to have a "threesome" with the girl after the girl expressed an interest in "experimenting" with a woman, he said.
The pair were arrested in 2004 after the girl came forward.
Defence counsel for Lowenstein, Stephen Walker, told the court the pair admitted to having sex with the girl only once, during the so-called threesome.
Mr Walker said the threesome had been a spontaneous affair and Lowenstein had thought the girl was over 16 at the time.
"If it was before she was 16, it wasn't long before, and he believed she was 16," Mr Walker said.
"Right from the beginning (Mr Lowenstein) has said that apart from that one incident, nothing ever happened."
