By definition, "couple of things" mean two things. However, in many countries with upcoming english population, couple has same significance as few or some.
"Few" represents a number which is short enough to be counted easily.
An important point is, although couple is a fixed number, not many people use it that correctly. In fact, apart from British English (you've got no idea how much pain it causes me to right that :P ), almost all dialects of english take couple as some. So none of them can be compared, as both of them are ambiguous.

Well to me, there's a subtle difference. Saying 'I've played football for the last 3 years' can be interpreted as past tense. More so than, 'I've been playing football for the last 3 years'. Saying I've played, could be interpreted as, you have, but aren't doing so anymore. While saying I've been playing, seems more continuous, like you have been and are continuing to.
Right, I hope that makes sense lol But there really isn't a major difference. Just the verb. Played, and playing. Played seems more past tense, playing seems more present tense. Played could seem like you're done playing lol Playing seems more like you're still playing.
Of course, it depends on the context, right. How it's used in a sentence. But there's generally not much of a difference.
