"Couple hours" or "Couple of hours"?

Hello.
I'm pretty puzzled which of these phrases is correct. Or maybe both are fine? If so, is there any difference in possible uses?

I'm sorry about that, I thought there would be no difference in any context and was interested in the most general case.
Here is a couple of sentences I can think of:
"A couple (of) hours later he was heading back home."
"The preparations will be finished in a couple (of) hours."
Thanks. You would always use "of" in these contexts. Often, when native-speakers say "a couple of", they practically swallow the "of" and it comes out sounding sort of like "a coupla hours". This could be what you're hearing. They often don't pronounce the "f" and the combination of the "ah" sound together with rolling it into the "h" sound of "hours", might make it sound like "of" is not being said.
Unfortunately, I'm not lucky enough to have heard much native speech. What makes me wonder is the fact that the number of results for "couple hours"(about 6 millions) in Google is bigger than the same number for "couple of hours"(about 4 millions) Here are some examples from first pages (only British sites were included):
"Up in Alaska: Escaped for a couple hours" (in a headline)
"I just colored my hair a couple hours ago and I hate the color that came out"
"First day on ship: A couple hours in classroom and 2 dives in an 8' pool"(in a schedule)"
"I think that it is really sad that people play video games for longer than an couple hours a day."
Are all these sentences wrong?

I get fairly similar results from web-wide searches, though when I limit the searches to UK pages, I get much smaller numbers:
"couple of hours": 609,000 hits
"couple hours": 446,000 hits
"a couple of hours": 527,000 hits
"a couple hours": 216,000 hits

I think the people who write "a couple hours" are trying to reflect the patterns they use in speech - it's similar to writing "wanna" instead of "want to".

I would assume (rightly or wrongly), if I had no other information than a sentence containing the phrase 'a couple hours', that an American had written it...
