Your spouse threw in the towel; you got the pink slip; the doctors told you and your partner that no matter how hard you try, the stick will never turn blue – whatever happened your world will never be the same. Whether your life’s a little or a lot out of whack, A Quickie on the Couch presents 21 goals designed to help you overcome a devastating event and get your life back on track, along with a large serving of humor when you most need it. "Incredible! An invaluable resource for anyone going through a major change in life that they didn't choose. This book is also hilarious - it encourages readers to change their attitudes so they can move beyond being the helpless effect of a life situation to being a causal factor in their own life by charting a new course forward." As the author states early in her book, when you're in a personal crisis, you don't need help after you've researched and read the best-rated, x-hundred page tome on the subject by some psychologist, counselor, or Dr. Phil. You need help NOW, in the moment, and not garped up with all kinds of jargon and irrelevant "research." And that's just what Amanda Darling gives you in her "Quickie on the Couch" guide; short, concise, to-the-point advice to provide emotional triage and get you on the road to recovery inside of an hour. Simple, stated in the plain language of your bestie rather than some brainiac (yet based on solid research and Amanda's own grueling experiences), and spiced with rib-tickling humor and doodles which can be therapeutic in themselves, this is the perfect refuge for you to run to the moment emotionally traumatic events hit and you feel you you have nowhere else to turn. If you're in a traumatic state now, or for the inevitable shocks that life will throw at you in the future, this (along with your best friend on speed-dial) is one of the most important resources you can have in your emotional first-aid kit. Worth soooo much more than its minuscule price.

A Quickie On The Couch is short, sweet and impactful. Laced with humor, there are tons of good nuggets of information that give someone going through a tough loss practical ideas on how to pick themselves up and keep moving. The 100 day framework makes an otherwise insurmountable task of getting through something as catastrophic as divorce seem almost like a challenge. The prize at the end is personal affirmation; what could be more important than that?

Pithy without being preachy. Warm but not smarmy. Funny but not flippant.

Quick read that provides good suggestions and exercises for moving forward in the right direction. Author writes with encouragement and a touch of humor.

"I laughed a lot while I read Amanda Darling's short book on overcoming tragedies. It was funny enough to break through my cynicism and insightful enough to be really helpful!

A quickie on the couch provides laughter and real help in bite size amounts at times you might need it the most. It's perfect when all you can handle is some short, recognizable stories and funny drawings. A recommended read, even for those who have not lost anything or anyone.

I started writing when I was fifteen. I had just finished reading Lord of the Flies and Pride and Prejudice, so the novel that I wrote was, naturally, a romantic tragedy of manners about a group of budding biologists of marriageable age who go to an isolated island to study the local fauna and flora, only to rapidly and mysteriously start dying of leukemia. (Logic was never my strong suit.) More novels, TV scripts and feature films blossomed beneath my eager but untrained pen. I am unable to throw anything away, so these early projects are now growing mould in my basement, making me one of the few people who secretly hopes my basement floods.
I have taken writing courses at UCLA and an MFA in screenwriting at Hollins University in Virginia, with a focus on romantic comedies and heartwarming dramas. My screenplays have won awards in Canada and the U.S. One of my feature film scripts, Children of Honor, was a Nicholl semi-finalist in 2013. I launched an independent film production company, McLachlan Entertainment, in 2014, in order to film a Christmas comedy feature script I wrote. I have written novels for adults and young adults, and a funny, practical guide for recovering from a traumatic event. I pride myself on delivering thoughtful content in an entertaining way.
