Not that every cosplayer is a attention whore...but lately Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, and even TV...it's like "look at my boobs and tell me how pretty I am" and now it seems like if fan puts on a mask and wears jeans with running shoes is consider "weak cosplay" da fuq? It's about having fun not about winning prizes.
Oh, and not talking about booth babes.

In short...they're not attention whores...money whores instead.
People are just doing what works. If you want to make a living out of cosplay you need to grab attention, if people give the most attention to the ones that show alot of skin that's obviously what works.

To the first highlight...are you complaining about pretty girls wearing sexy hero outfits? A lot of fangirls are actually really pretty...let them show off if they want to.
To the secong highlight...that is weak cosplay, but acceptable nonetheless. And, at times, really funny.
Though i do agree that cosplay should focus on fun, it is a counterculture that has exponentially grown since 2006( roughly ). There are actually some pretty good documentaries out, revolving around cosplay, and how competative it is. I mean, people get job offers from production companies, if their work is impressive enough. One documentary that came out about a year ago, My Other Me , is a really good expose on the subject. There is also a documentary/TV series, called Heroes of Cosplay , and i really enjoyed it as well. I would say its a bit better than the aforementioned documentary.
In my opinion, if you're going to cosplay, do it properly. Spend time and money on your costume, don't just grab random articles of clothing that kind of resemble a costume and claim you're that character.
That being said, pretty much every female character in comics that people would want to cosplay as show a lot of skin, so chances are they're going to feel pretty damn insecure about how they look, and fishing for compliments is one of the ways people deal with feeling insecure about something.

I like to see a really well made costume. Even better if it's of a C list character like Ragman or Scandal Savage. But for the most part cosplay is just one more aspect of "geek" culture that I can ignore. At a convention I'm hitting up the half priced trades and hanging around artists alley. I'm not concerned with taking pictures with the dozens of Wonder Women and Slave Leia's walking the floor.

It is when you're on a budget :P. But honestly I loved that era and it's what got me into Superman so it has a special place in my heart. I would have gone this year to CCSD but tickets sold out quickly. Next year I guess,
@saint_wildcard : Im going to SDCC. I have been going for a long time, since 2002. Its the one thing i look forward to all year, and San Deigo, in itself, is also what makes Comic Con so great! Though, i have never gone in costume. I always have plans to, but i get lazy or forget. I really want to, at least once, though.

Do you hate Halloween too ? Lol its mostly for fun and most girls dont want to dress like Amanda Waller especially when most superheroines dress like their role playing in the bedroom

Jessica Nigri put money, A LOT of money into her costume, but at the same time always has alot of boobage, like her Vegeta costume, but over all she is very nice and never stuck up when 10000 of guys are swarming her. I respect the fact her sexy outfits are still easy to tell who she is trying to be. I wonder if at the end of the day those girls are the type who get mad men objectify. There was a "misty" at fan expo vancouver this year, and it took me a minute to clue in, I didn't know if she was supposed to be Tits Mcgee or what. If you google fan expo Vancouver 2014 she will probably come up because shes a hot babe with tits, but over all the costume was a tshirt short shorts and red hair. But then I saw someone in a bra and Panties. Literally had no idea what she was supposed to be other than "tits"

You are not wrong about that. The first thing you need to do, is make an account here . This account allows you to purchase tickets, and stores your information in the system, making purchasing a bit quicker. At that point, it is just the persistence to continually check your email, and the SDCC site for upcoming information. When you do get tickets (even if it is only a one day pass, get it), you are automatically placed in Pre-Registration for the following year, thus making your badge purchase far more smooth. Open Registration must be a pain in the backside, but I never had to deal with that. Until 2011, they just put badges on sale one day, and didnt let the public know...you had to check the website, like everyday. Back then it was a lot easier to buy tickets. SDCC never sold out until 2008...then it became exponentiall more enormous every following year.

This has never made any sense to me. You can paid for Cosplay, but it's not like the money's that great. Even a mediocre model would blow a cosplayer out of the water in terms of money earned. So why in the world would they choose to be cosplayers if money was all they were after?
Turns out i look just like Dexter Morgan....so yeah...my weak cosplay is actually pretty legit :)

Also, a LOT of girls cosplaying seem to heavily modified the look or outfit of the said character to be sexier by choice. So why can't they just do the reverse? They clearly have the talent and means to make the outfits look more practical but keep the iconic feel of whatever they're cosplaying, so why don't they? It just seems like...I don't know.

Uhh...I think you misread or misunderstood....this is an OBSERVATION not a complain. If this was a complain then I would be saying "Oh Fat Girls and Fat Dudes Look like Attention Whores for Cosplaying" that is not the case here.
There is no such thing as "weak cosplaying" that is the reaction from these elite cosplayers. Because you don't look hot you are not cool like me....Okay, this is not right and it's happening.
2006? Try again...How about you watch Trekkies. The cosplay in those days were not about sexism or how hot you look or how much boobs you showed. It was about nerds being nerds...not these models or booth babes. And don't consider this an evolution of cosplay...more like elitism.

Yeah, I guess it's about fun, but I'm a perfectionist when it comes to cosplaying.

@xcalibur : Trekkies is a great documentary, but cosplay was still in its infancy, compared to nowadays. And, yes, there is weak cosplaying. If you want to wear some blue jeans, a shirt, hold a painted paper plate in your hand, and call youself Captain America...that's great, and i find it to be fun...but its weak. And, if you are having fun, then who cares? But, i also recognize the people who spend months in their garage creating costumes that blow people away. To say that everyone is a great cosplayer would be ridiculous, and a lie. Also, I am not solely speaking about robust women, wearing scantily clad outfits...there is a much wider group of cosplayers than that, and far more dedicated. Have you seen the documentaries i mentioned? They really show how meticulous and dedicated a lot of cosplayers are...not all, but a lot, and a lot more than there used to be prior to 2006.
Did you just have a bad couple of experiences, or something, and are now extremely jaded? Because i will definitely say that this is a weird subject to be carying a torch for, so vehemently.
It depends at the cosplayer in question. Some are "whores", while others have a legit interest in art.
As for the average joe and jane, just do what you like and have fun.

Some of the cosplay models do model for other agencies...and even then, to be a model is a full time commitment, to be cosplay model is not. So I imagine for a lot of the girls cosplaying is like a side gig. It's like the basketball players where I live who go to weekend tournaments. They could probably give the NBA a shot, but why risk it when you have a full time job, no guarantee of making it past training camp, and a sweet side gig anyways? That's how I look at it at least...
I didn't know people could make money off that sh*t. I think there are easier ways for me to make money than what I do, maybe I need to re-evaluate lol.

This isn't new. The only difference is that social media has made it easier for people to get attention like this.
