Throughout the almost 25 year existence of the Neon Genesis Evangelion franchise, there have been quite a few costume tributes to a specific blue-haired beauty. And with her intense eyes, great outfits, and captivating character arc, Rei Ayanami continues to inspire incredible cosplays. But with so many beautiful creations over the years, which are the cosplays that embody Rei's aesthetics the best? Well, with this list, you'll get plenty of possible answers.
From those that take on the challenge of reproducing her iconic mecha suit to those that want to bring to life Rei's more casual outfits, we'll take a look at those who stand Evangelion heights above the costume competition. So let's take a flight to the moon and discover 10 Amazing Rei Cosplays That Look Just Like The Anime!
There is nothing more exciting than representing an anime character in there most glamorous state. And in this cosplay by Aetheyacosplay (photographed by Baemon Photography ), every element comes together to create a stunning tribute to Rei.
From the snowy atmosphere, beautiful lace details on the costume, the pair of screen-accurate earrings, all the way down to a classy pair of heels, everything about this cosplay gets it right. But perhaps the best element of all is Aetheyacosplay, who gets Rei's soft yet stern nature down with ease. It is cosplays like this that feel like an orchestra coming together to produce a seamless, exquisite, costume melody.
Inspired by a collectible figure designed by illustrator Shunya Yamashita , and the black plugsuit featured in the Rebuild of Evangelion film series, this cosplay embodies Rei Ayanami in a whole new way. With crisp, sharp edges and other unique details and shapes, cosplayer onbluesnow (shown in this photo by stregatt0 ) brings the unique qualities of this redesigned outfit to life, with excellent craftsmanship.
Everything from the well-picked colors to the specific embellishments on the corset and the gloves show how much love and care went into this outfit, creating a fun twist on Rei that doesn't often get displayed in the cosplay world.
Another classic look from Ms. Ayanami's wardrobe would be the ever-popular school uniform. Though worn by many of the other female characters throughout the franchise, there's something about seeing this blue, red, and white outfit paired with Rei's ocean-shade locks that makes the whole thing pop.
And when it comes to costume tributes to this iconic coordinate, one excellent example of it is this cosplay by axilirator . With beautiful lines, tiny details (like blue nails), and stunning make-up, this is a simple yet elegant interpretation that captures the soft elements of the character without becoming too over the top.
In this more classic version of the new black plugsuit from Evangelion 3.0, cosplayer blancalawliet embodies Rei's reserved nature with a costume that is full of exciting elements from head to toe.
It can be hard to bring a character to life who wears such a detailed suit and add your own twist. But with the signature shapes that decorate the suit, the famous number on the chest, along with a perfectly styled wig and hair clips, blancalawliet gets all the aspects down with handcrafted love and care shown in every tiny bit.
Sometimes the best renditions of a character are the ones that bring the most holiday cheer. And in this merry cosplay, a Santa version of Rei is brought to life thanks to the talents of lina-no-uta .
In this outfit (photographed by Monsieur Gourmet ) all of the twinkle and joy of the season is represented. From the beautiful choice of red, along with the excellent tailoring and cute pom-pom touches, this jolly and full of holly costume embodies everything about Rei and Christmas in a package wonderfully gift wrapped for the season.
A few of the best cosplays are the ones that, though simple in choice and construction, somehow become the definition of magic. That's the case with this take on Rei's school uniform, this time created by cosplayer Bri Bangarang and photographed by the talented MC Illusion Photography .
Though this is a trendy outfit of Rei's, Bri and MC collaborate in such a way that everything seems to (literally and figuratively) sparkle. And with the whimsical touch of the beautiful lighting choices, Bri transforms into the character in such a way that you might think this is a still from a live-action adaptation.
Usually, the most fun interpretations of a character come from toy designs. And in this cosplay (inspired by the SEGA Evangelion Racing figure from 2016) is a beautiful example of such a statement. Created by the talented darknaito (and photographed by Ryouma ), this unique take on Rei brings a sense of silliness and excitement to the character.
Typically Ms. Ayanami is depicted as being shy and reserved, but in this outfit, there's a bit more spice to her persona as she poses by the racetrack. And with beautiful make-up (including vibrant blush details) and a powerful stance, this is one Rei cosplay that stands out among the rest.
Though Rei typically wears a more simple one-piece in the anime, this swimsuit cosplay by Stephanie Stone (captured by photographer blizzardterrak ) shows off a more fashionable and feminine side to the character. And with a beautiful poolside setting (that compliments Rei's signature blue locks) to add to the summertime mood, along with charming make-up and a Pen Pen plushie, this look embodies the character in an adorable yet glamorous way.
But the most interesting aspect to the entire look is the smallest of details - a band-aid. Though probably not intentional, these are the little things that make Rei come alive in more ways than one.
A fan-favorite rendition of any anime lady is, of course, a maid outfit. Not only is the concept ridiculously fun, but it can be interesting to wonder how a quiet and reserved individual (such as Rei) would work in a maid cafe setting.
Thankfully, with cosplays such as this wonderful one by the talented gnitae (photographed by Timfowl ), such a quirky fantasy can come to life in stunning detail. From the vibrant blue shades of the costume to gnitae's expert make-up and wig styling skills, this cosplay checks all of the right boxes without becoming too over the top nor ridiculous.
When it comes to memorable outfits that come from Rei's closet, none of them get more iconic than her white and black plugsuit. And in this Angel-fighting ready cosplay, by the supremely talented Sanchichy (photographed here by willwdm ), Ms. Ayanami radiates in beautiful and polished detail.
Not only is the wig top-notch, but the contacts are the perfect, haunting shade of red that pierces right through you upon sight. Mix those elements with Rei's signature hair clips, and you have an excellent, comfortable, and well-realized example of a classic anime look given a stellar tribute in costume form.
