Let’s talk about Avatar cosplay ideas!
I feel like we should give Western cartoons more credit. Sure, we love our Anime so much and for good reason; some series are just so amazing. But Western cartoons can be just good as the stuff produced in Japan. And dare I say…even better?! That’s definitely debatable. But one series from here in North America is top notch. And which one is that? Avatar!

So are you getting bored of cosplaying Anime characters and want to try something different? Then Avatar is for you! Whether you’re a fan of the original, The Last Airbender…or a fan of the sequel, The Legend of Korra, you’ll find quite a few characters to choose form.
I myself wanted to make this post because my Avatar Pinterest board is incredibly hot. So I figured it’s a good time to post something like this.
The main character and mascot of The Last Airbender, Aang is a laidback, fun guy. Unlike most main characters who are hard-headed and overly energetic to fight or solve problems, Aang is the complete opposite. He truly represents the carefree nature of wind power and prefers to not fight in order to solve problems. Basically a pacifist. Aang is just a cool dude overall!
This list could not be done without Katara of course (the character on the cover of this post). The waterbending master heroine, Katara is an iconic character from the series. She’s known for being a bit stubborn yet strong at the same time. Katara is like a mother to many of the other characters in Avatar; she is known to take care of the people around her! Cosplaying Katara is fun for photoshoots; you can do her iconic waterbending pose and it would look so cool.
Asami is a girl who is the daughter of a wealthy father. Unlike many of the characters, Asami has no special abilities like airbending. But she is skilled in ordinary things such as engineering and driving. Asami is a beautiful-looking character who eventually becomes Korra’s love interest in the end. So she is perfect if you’re looking for an LGBT cosplay couple idea .
The reincarnation of the Avatar and the main character of the sequel series, Korra is the complete opposite of Aang. Unlike him, Korra is pretty hot-headed and likes to take action and fight first rather than work things out peacefully. While she is athletic and strong, over time she eventually develops her spiritual side, which is important for her role. Being the main character, Korra is a great cosplay option!
She may be a little girl, but she can definitely kick some ass! Even though Toph is actually blind, she uses her extremely talented and gifted earthbending abilities to locate objects everywhere. Toph is a great sidekick to Aang and also a great choice for Avatar cosplay! I find there are a lot of characters with orange or blue-coloured outfits. So Toph is great in that she wears green, so you’d definitely stand out more in an Avatar group photoshoot .
If you want to cosplay a fun character, Sokka is the way to go! Unlike his sister Katara, Sokka possesses no water bending abilities. But he makes up for this by being a handyperson and being really good with weapons. So his costume goes well with cosplay prop weapons like hhis signature boomerang.
Yue was the princess of the Northern Water Tribe, as well as Sokka’s love interest. There’s not much to dislike about her; she was the perfect woman who was sweet and gentle, while also caring much for her tribe. Yue has got the coolest hair and outfit!
Another firebender, Mako is a handsome man with such fierce skills. Because of his rough upbringing, Mako takes a more serious and stern approach to things. Mako is quite the polarizing character but if you happen to love him, then you should definitely cosplay him!
The son of the original Fire Lord Ozai, Zuko is originally exiled from the Fire Nation and told to capture the Avatar. In his journey to capture the Avatar Aang, Zuko ends up his changing his personality and even his goals. Zuko is quite the complex character, an anti-hero I’d say. He’s not too difficult to cosplay, so if you want someone easy to do, then go for Zuko.
If you want to cosplay someone crazy, then look no further than Princess Azula. Unlike her brother Zuko, Azula is far more amoral and shows no fear or remorse for her actions. She’ll do whatever it takes to accomplish her goals, although in the end, it costs her sanity to do so.
Here are the 10 Avatar cosplay you should try:
It may be a kid’s show, but the series deals with adult topics as well. And maybe that’s what makes this series so appealing. Not to mention all the different and diverse to love and to cosplay!

Airbenders like Aang, Tenzin, and Zaheer make for some truly stylish and authentic cosplays. Here are 10 of the best ones!
The universe of Avatar: The Last Airbender is a richly realized one, from its many colorful characters like Aang's group and Prince Zuko, all the way to the simple but exciting combat system. In this world, magic takes the form of bending, and gifted individuals can bend the four classical Greek elements.
Airbenders once had a peaceful nation based on the four main temples, and Airbender monks would roam freely between those temples and other lands. Now, Aang is the last one , but his son Tenzin and his grandchildren help keep the tradition alive. Stylish benders like these definitely call for some cool cosplays, and the fans have delivered.
Avatar Aang is one powerful kid, and in the span of one year, he learned how to bend water, earth, and fire as well as air, and cosplayer 7thsparrowsonnets made sure to capture that idea in this cosplay shot. Aang is working with rocks today, and he looks quite comfortable handling earth rather than air.
Adult Aang is more confident and cool-headed than the kid version, and he needs a way to blow off steam and relax. So, he gently bends some rocks to keep his earthbending skills sharp but with the gentle, meditative aura of a true Airbender.
For most of the world's history, "Airbender villain" was practically an oxymoron. Still, all that changed when avatar Korra opened the spirit portals and allowed spirits to leave their own world and live with humans. A side effect was creating many new Airbenders, such as the villainous Zaheer .
Zaheer is an anarchist who wants to topple civilization, and cosplayer notyouraveragejoe_92 faithfully recreated Zaheer's distinct outfit and stern, tough expression, and aura. This Airbender isn't here to make air scooters; he's ready for revolution.
Tenzin is a stern but caring Airbender teacher and parent, and he certainly had his hands full when avatar Korra arrived in the bustling Republic City unannounced to learn from him. Once Tenzin got over the shock, he began teaching Korra all he knew about bending air.
Tenzin's cosplayer, arnoutthejuggernaut , made sure to capture Tenzin's impatience and deliver a stern, flustered lecture to his rowdy disciple, avatar Korra. Before Korra can bend air, Tenzin must bend his mind around this challenge and find a way to teach Korra more effectively.
Tenzin's eldest child is Jinora , who is something of a prodigy herself. Jinora always had the right attitude for airbending, being studious and patient, and earning her Airbender tattoos at a remarkably young age, like her grandfather before her.
Now, cosplayer j.k.kyle depicts Jinora during the events of Book Four: Balance, where she is decked out in the Air Nation's new outfit while meditating comfortably on a rock. She's also got some spirit friends with her, and she has a remarkable affinity for these creatures, as Book Three showed.
Although M. Night Shyamalan's live-action adaptation didn't go over so well, it did include some fancy visuals and creative costume designs that can inspire some cosplay, and sure enough, cosplayer benedictlique gave it a try.
In this action-oriented cosplay shot, Aang is standing resolutely against Fire Nation forces, and he's kicking up dust as he conjures a whirlwind that can keep any flames or swords at bay. It's time to bring peace back to the world.
Ikki is one of the more colorful minor characters in the franchise, and she is Tenzin's second child after her big sister Jinora. Ikki goofs off a lot like her little brother Meelo, but when duty calls, Ikki is ready to help protect the newborn Air Nation from any threat, even Kuvira's Earth Empire forces.
Cosplayer theartistlibrariancosplay perfectly captured Ikki's bubbly personality in this cosplay shot, from her warm smile to her new air bison plushie, as if to say, "You and I will have so much fun together!" Ikki is always up for some adventure, high in the sky.
Aang is a man of peace, and ideally, he can live in a world where people like him can meditate and study all day without interruption. But if criminals, rogue armies, or mercenaries threaten the peace, then Aang will leap into action and bring the avatar state with him.
Cosplayer conventionroamer12 depicts an adult Aang who has more than airbending at his disposal. A grave threat has arrived, and Aang's peaceful nature will give way to the avatar's awe-inspiring might and authority.
Jinora always seeks the sky to find enlightenment and new perspectives. Like her father, she takes her heritage seriously and always prefers studying and meditation to play, despite her youth. No wonder she earned that arrow tattoo at such a young age.
Cosplayer shappiworkshop depicts Jinora atop a hill one fine afternoon, unfolding her glider and testing the wind to see how she can best take to the skies and stay there. Every day is a good day to soar among the clouds.
For months, Aang knew that his destiny as the avatar called for him to face and defeat the mighty Fire Lord Ozai , and when Sozin's Comet returned, Aang confronted Ozai for the first and last time in mortal combat.
Cosplayer sonokocos is clearly alluding to that fateful battle in this exciting cosplay shot, where Aang is going into the avatar state as he crouches amid blistering flames and volcanic eruptions. The entire world is on fire, and only Aang can save it.
Some Airbender cosplays involve original, unique characters rather than staples like Aang and Tenzin, allowing them to stretch the limits of their imagination and deepen the world with their own character.
Cosplayer axcelerationdesigns depicts a new Airbender who admires the dawn as the light returns to the world. Perhaps she is one of the new Airbenders born after Korra re-opened the spirit portals, and this new Airbender is seeing the expansive sky in a whole new way. Now she can fly free all the time.

Nickelodeon's hit animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender has inspired hundreds of fans across the world to come up with incredible Aang cosplays.
Nickelodeon's hit animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender brings us an Asian-inspired world of magic and fantasy, but there's a war on. The Fire Nation has wiped out the air nomads, and now it's battling the Water Tribe and Earth Kingdom for total world domination. Only the legendary avatar, master of the four elements, can make this right. And that's the job of Aang , the last airbender .
Aang is the star of The Last Airbender , and he's an upbeat 12-year-old boy with some incredible burdens on his shoulders. He lost his entire people and must face the mighty Fire Lord, but never does this young airbender monk give up hope. To show their love for this outstanding hero, many cosplayers have dressed up as him in spectacular fashion, and here are ten of our favorites.
Aang may be the last survivor of the Air Nation, but he's not alone for long. Once he emerges from the iceberg, he and Apa accept Sokka and Katara as their new family, and soon, Toph and Suki join up too, not to mention Momo the lemur and later, even prince Zuko.
This cosplay pays loving tribute to the good friends who make this adventure possible, and being the avatar, Aang takes center stage. This cosplayer's stunning red robes and light blue tattoos are true to the character, and that somber but hopeful expression fits the burdens Aang must carry... and the hope he won't ever give up.
Our second entry brings us a gender-bender Aang cosplay that takes place late in season 3 when Aang has grown his hair out and is waiting on that island for the invasion fleet to arrive and pick him up. We love the ocean setting for this shot, which looks so serene. It contrasts nicely with the battles that lay ahead.
The cosplayer stands tall and confident, and she's got Aang's trademark glider. That prop looks like it was handcrafted, and expertly made. We can imagine the cosplayer unfolding it and taking flight!
Is that a Fire Nation citizen? No, it's avatar Aang, but in disguise. After his defeat in Ba Sing Se, Aang started operating covertly, and he wanted the world to think him dead so he could escape the Fire Nation's notice.
Once the Gaang arrived in the Fire Nation, they stole some clothes to blend in, and Aang unwittingly obtained a school uniform. Now, the cosplayer shows that even in disguise, with his airbender tattoos hidden, Aang hasn't forgotten his roots, and he's always up for a meditation session.
Here is another cosplay of Aang in season 3, when he is still in disguise. Strictly speaking, Zuko didn't join the group until after Aang shed this disguise, but we don't mind. Anyway, each cosplayer is totally in character here, from Aang's funny lovestruck face to Zuko's impatience.
Aang just wants to take some time and admire his best friend Katara (you can see her in the other photos in this entry), and Zuko is a little annoyed that firebending practice is bein
