 If an enterprise decides to move to SD-WAN, it is important for IT leaders to understand how to adjust SD-WAN for proper use. Unfortunately, many companies have made big mistakes in the proper implementation of SD-WAN.

 Specifically, there are many IT leaders and staff who assume the following:

  • Migrating to SD-WAN can replace any private WAN solution with a pure broadband Internet connection
  • Ultimately cost savings are guaranteed
  • It is not difficult to operate SD-WAN and keep it running smoothly.

 What about the reality?

 Sadly, this is just an illusion. This series of false assumptions stems from the fundamental misunderstanding that choosing SD-WAN frees you from the hybrid WAN infrastructure.

 This assumption is not realistic. This assumption is wrong if the IT team is responsible for ensuring the performance of business-critical applications. It is not reasonable to expect that performance can be guaranteed using only SD-WAN via a best-effort broadband service.

 SD-WAN certainly offers several techniques and technologies that improve speed and uptime when using broadband connections where the number of connections affects speed. But even to some extent the situation will improve. When improvement reaches its limit, it can be very time consuming due to service outages and degradation, leaving the business negatively impacted. Broadband providers' average repair time guarantees are not necessarily reliable. Is there room to invest in something like this?
