Cordura motorcycle jacket can be more resistance than leather

Motorcycle suits made of leather are generally considered more durable than suits made of plastic. There are two reasons for this: The first is that cowhide has long been used to make racing clothing, and leather quality. The second reason is that few brands use strong synthetics.

The fact is, cowhide is still the same as it was a few years ago, but innovation in synthetic materials continues unabated.

What is Cordura?

Cordura is a fabric developed by DuPont made from rayon, a 6-6 nylon with excellent abrasion and tear resistance. Because of these properties, it is widely used to make clothing and accessories such as motorcycle jackets, backpacks and ski suits.

Cordura motorcycle jacket usually has a thickness of about 400 denier, which in this case is less resistant than cowhide, which has about 1000 denier. The higher the denier number, the thicker the fiber section and the higher the abrasion resistance.

However, there are also higher grades of Cordura such as 700D, 1000D and even 1100D.

Cordura motorcycle jacket has the advantage over leather in that the fibers are more flexible and require less maintenance (leather requires more attention to hydration and cleaning). Jackets often have a waterproof inner layer that protects against rain, cold and wind.

Beyond Cordura

Cordura is probably the best-known synthetic material for motorcycle clothing. However, there are also better performing synthetics such as UHMWPE synthetic leather, Kevlar and Superfabric (the most durable material for motorcycle clothing).
