Continuation bet: continue your raise

The continuation bet, often abbreviated to a c-bet (English pronunciation), is a bet you make after raising before the flop with the aim of making your opponent fold. What you're saying is, "Before the flop, I had a good hand, I still do now. So you might as well fold."

C-betting is something every poker player should be able to master, and what every good poker player does. Yet there are many mistakes that are regularly made by even the best players. In this article, you will learn how c-betting works and how to do it properly.

C-betting: how does it work?

The c-bet is a way to maintain the initiative when you haven't had much on the flop. If you raised before the flop and only called, you are the so-called preflop aggressor. That means you have the initiative. After the flop, you want to keep this status.

That's why we bet again after the flop, even if you didn't have much or nothing on the flop. We usually put in about 60% of the pot. That's not too little, which makes people call, and not too much, which makes you lose a lot of money if you get raised.

When don't you c-bet?

To understand when to c-bet, it is good to understand when you don't. It is also good to remember that the purpose of your bet is always to make your opponent fold. But when is the chance that your opponent will not fold?

-  If he's a  calling station ;

Calling stations are players who always call regardless of their hand. You recognize them because they are not aggressive but still play a lot. You shouldn't c-bet against these people. 

- If there are more people in the pot;

C-betting is done against one, at most two people. Are there more than two opponents in the pot? Then just check. To be clear, you have to bet with a good hand, but we don't call it a c-bet anymore.

- When a  low plate falls.

Is there a flop of 235? Then just check. You raised before the flop to show that you have a good hand. So you will not benefit from such a low board and no one will believe that you do.

- When there are many draws on the board

With a draw-heavy board, such as 789 of the same suit, many hands can have a flush or a straight. Worse hands that called pre-flop can now suddenly have a monster.

In brief. You don't  C-bet  when:

Your opponent is a  calling station ;

If you have a multi-way pot (many players);

If the board is very low and no one is going to believe your c-bet;

There are many draws on the board that your opponents can hit.

The red line here is that you don't c-bet when there is a small chance that your opponents will fold: in poker terms, we call this low fold equity.
