Court documents share more insight into why police say a son killed his mother at a home east of Springfield Tuesday night.
Friends of Connor Cox, 21, say they are shocked by the allegations and why he said he killed his mother, Angela Cox, 53. Cox is jailed on a murder charge.
Investigators say Terry Cox, Connor's father, came home from work to find his wife Angela shot to death in a chair in their home office. He told deputies he thought their son was involved. Connor's friend, Paul McKnight, says police knocked on his door that night.
'They said they were looking for him, trying to make sure he's safe," said McKnight.
Paul had just spent the day with his friend and former roommate from Southwest Baptist University.
"We went to the mall, we hung out, normal stuff, same stuff we always do," said McKnight. "It was my day off, you know, and he came over."
Officers later found Connor in his mom's car in Taney County. Court documents say he admitted to shooting Angela Cox Tuesday.
"I don't expect something like this from Connor," said McKnight.
According to court documents, Connor said he shot his mother because she was always down and in pain, mostly because of his actions, so he thought he would, quote "end that."
"I'm not sure what Connor was dealing with, because that's not the Connor I know, and his mom, of all people, definitely didn't deserve it," said McKnight.
Connor's friends know he suffers from depression, but never expected this.
"He used to tell me he was all against taking medication, and he just started it again when he moved back with his parents, and he said he was feeling alright since then," said McKnight.
Paul says for a while, he even lived in the Cox family home, and never saw tension.
"They were like a very religious family," said McKnight. "They're very nice. I think Connor came from a very nice home. His parents really do love him, and you could definitely tell."
Now, like so many others, his heart aches.
"I feel the most for Terry, because he has to go home," said McKnight. "I feel like he loves Connor and always did, but now he has to go home to nothing almost."
