National Condom Day was started during the late 1980s by an AIDS support group in the United States. Its goal is to promote condom use and educate people about the importance of practicing safe sex. It is the same day as Valentine’s Day because studies show that during this day, condom sales are about 25% higher compared to the other days of the year. National Condom Day is a timely reminder for people to always practice safe sex by using a condom during sexual activity not just to protect themselves but their partners as well.
Out of all the birth control methods available, the condom is the most frequently used method because it is convenient and has a high contraceptive rate with 98% effectiveness rate for male condoms and 95% for female condoms. Take note that this is when both are used correctly and consistently. Moreover, it also protects against the spread of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) like HIV, gonorrhoea and chlamydia.
Studies indicate that students who are sexually active often use the condom as their form of contraception. About 63% of students believe that it is the most effective contraceptive method that also protects against STDs. The problem is that condoms are not always available and the majority of students are embarrassed about buying them. Studies also indicate that people are more likely to use condoms if they are available during sexual encounters. Thus, it is also important to become more comfortable with purchasing and carrying condoms aside from using them.
The primary purpose of National Condom Day is to promote the use of condoms and educate people in regards to the need for practicing safe sex at all times. The aim of the National Condom Day is to get more people comfortable with purchasing, carrying, talking about and using condoms during sexual activity. It is also for promoting healthy and safe relationships and reminding people about the risks of sexually transmitted diseases and unplanned pregnancies as well. The day is a reminder to always practice safe sex.
National Condom Day is also a reminder of the importance of using a condom correctly. This is so that the condom will protect against STDs and unwanted pregnancies. Most people are not aware that you can get condoms for free at local clinics, health departments and other organizations. You can also learn how to use it correctly from these places while at the same time having any sexual wellness questions answered.
Safe sex is very important today because of the numerous sexually transmitted diseases that are prevalent. The use of condoms is the most effective and convenient way to prevent the transmission of STDs. It is also one of the best methods for the prevention of an unplanned pregnancy. We need to become comfortable buying, carrying and using it. National Condom Day was created specifically for these purposes so it is important to mark this day and increase awareness about the need for practicing safe sex at all times.

Even though events looked different this year, AIDS Healthcare Foundation’s (AHF’s) International Condom Day (ICD) was a raging success worldwide.
With the spread of COVID-19 still of significant concern, ICD celebrations were reimagined with social distancing as a top priority. Some countries got creative and hosted virtual events where condom education, advocacy, and entertainment were able to reach thousands of people from the safety of their own homes. Where local guidelines allowed for in-person events, attendees and staff wore masks, and everyone practiced social distancing.
This year AHF streamed a live burlesque show starring Netflix is a Joke’s Flame Monroe and Season 7 Winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race Violet Chachki. The burlesque show promoted safer sex practices while providing entertainment to large virtual crowds on Facebook and YouTube. If you missed the live performance, you can still get a taste of the fun from the “When You Wear a Condom” parody which also stars Flame Monroe and Violet Chachki.

COVID-19 has impacted many aspects of our lives, and access to condoms was not spared from the effects of the pandemic. But that didn’t stop AHF from hosting our ever-popular (and COVID-safe) “Always in Fashion” and “Safer is Sexy” International Condom Day (ICD) events worldwide!
“This current pandemic reminds us how critical it is to protect ourselves,” said AHF Director of Global Advocacy and Partnerships Joey Terrill . “We’ve been fighting HIV for nearly 40 years, yet condoms – an extremely cost-effective method for preventing HIV, STIs and unplanned pregnancies – are still difficult to access for millions of people around the world. We all have the power to do more to change that, including governments, international public health agencies, NGOs and individuals. Access to affordable condoms that are packaged in an attractive way, along with consistent use, can go a long way in reducing new HIV infections, and save lives!”

AHF teams in Asia kicked off ICD with a bang this year by hosting events including a Tik Tok video contest, virtual condom advocacy and HIV education, and government calls to action. Other efforts included dancing shows, HIV testing to reach key populations, and raising awareness about the importance of condoms through media campaigns and a bicycle-motorcycle roadshow

Youth and key populations were the focus across AHF Europe for ICD 2021, which incorporated HIV testing and utilized a mix of virtual and in-person events aimed at education and raising awareness. Innovative initiatives included a cooking class using HIV prevention tools and a video competition on proper condom use!
AHF advocates in Latin America and the Caribbean got the word out about condoms using fun events that included a lively debate on female and male condoms, a mini festival featuring youth artists, and an outdoor recital at a park frequented by local youth. Mass transit systems were used to help people grab free condoms, and several teams streamed online virtual sessions that educated audience members regionwide.

In Africa, teams targeted busy city centers and popular hotspots for mass condom distribution and education, and also organized meetings with stakeholders to strengthen condom policy. AHF staff also hosted an “Always in Fashion” poetry session and took to nationwide television and radio airwaves to reach as many people as possible with live concerts by popular artists and an informative civil society discussion forum.

Events promoting condom use and safer sex are set in more than 37 AHF countries worldwide
As part of the events, AHF is releasing two music videos: ‘I Feel Frisky,’ a burlesque parody of the classic ‘West Side Story’ song, ‘I Feel Pretty,’ and ¡Póntelo! ((Put it On!) a spicy Spanish language song by the Latin Grammy-winning artists Los Rabanes
LOS ANGELES (February 13, 2022) Happy International Condom Day! Today marks the global holiday that promotes safer sex.

To celebrate, AHF is hosting events in more than 37 of the 45 countries that AHF provides services in. Condom Day events range from free HIV testing and condom distribution, interactive social media campaigns, awareness-raising rallies and flash mobs, online and in-person panel discussions as well as other events, many of which have a particular focus on young people.

“AHF first spearheaded International Condom Day in 2009 as an innovative and lighthearted way to remind people that wearing a condom can prevent pregnancy and STDs, including HIV,” said Michael Weinstein President of AHF.

In the US, AHF created a spicy parody music video of the timeless West Side Story hit "I Feel Pretty.” AHF’s version, "I Feel Frisky," offers a burlesque style twist on the classic production and the video and song served as centerpiece of a live, socially distanced West Side Story Burlesque show featuring a cast of powerhouse performers that wowed audiences in performances in four cities across the country: Houston, TX (Jan. 30 th ), Tampa, FL (Feb. 2), Orlando, FL (Feb. 5) and which culminated in a blowout performance last evening in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
And as part of the global celebration, AHF’s Latin American and Caribbean Bureau teamed with Los Rabanes, the Latin Grammy-winning artists hailing from Panama to create a lighthearted International Condom Day song and video titled ¡Póntelo! ((Put it On!).
AHF, which now has over 1.7 million lives in care, will provide and distribute safely over 1 million free condoms in recognition of this significant holiday.
