Numerical skill ratings are going away in Overwatch 2, with tiers for each rank replacing them.
Overwatch 2 will introduce major changes to PVP. We already knew about many of those, including the shift from 6v6 to 5v5, new heroes, rebalanced characters, the Push game type and more maps. Competitive mode is getting some notable updates too.
Competitive 2.0, as it's known, will shift away from placing a numerical skill rating front and center. "Instead of a numeric skill rating, we're adding these skill tiers within the larger ones," principal designer Scott Mercer said during today’s Reveal Event . "If you see someone at a really high skill tier, you know that person is not just that good of an Overwatch player, but they've earned it."
This should align Overwatch 2 more closely with other shooters. Valorant, for instance , has tiers for each rank except for Radiant. Overwatch 2 will have five tiers per rank. Partly because of a shift away from a numerical skill rating, your level won’t be updated after every single Competitive match anymore.
“Players will no longer get one singular SR rating for ranks. Each of the tiers now have multiple sub-tiers. So, you could you could be like a rank-two gold,” Overwatch 2 game director Aaron Keller said in an interview this week. “What we want is for people to progress through these ranks over the course of each season. To do that, rather than moving up or down in rank after every match that you play, after you win seven matches, your rank will get updated at that point.”
I think this is a positive move. The idea is to give players a sense that they’re making progress over time. Seeing the SR incrementally tick up or down based on single wins and losses has never felt truly useful, so I dig this approach.
Meanwhile, along with the new scoreboard, you'll be able to see a post-match "after-action report," according to Mercer. "You can look at the report while you're in the queue. You can actually go into your history section [in your profile] and look. We want to work towards providing you with information that will help you improve your game."
Overwatch 2 will feature a revamped player profile, including a more in-depth match history section.
The Reveal Event included a screenshot of the history section of a player profile, which seems to replace the replays section — highlights will be accessible here too. It has two more interesting things worth noting: a nickname ("World's best sniper") and a customization tab. Definitely curious to find out more about how those work.
By the way, don’t pay any attention to the inclusion of Hanamura on that screenshot. As things stand, assault maps won’t be available in Competitive or Quick Play. Along with Busan as a Hybrid map, it’s purely there as a placeholder. However, Overwatch art director Dion Rogers noted in the interview that the team plans to revisit the "aesthetics of Hanamura" at some point. (I still like that map a lot, so that makes me happy.)
Overwatch 2 will launch on October 4. The second closed PVP beta will start on PC, PlayStation and Xbox on June 28.

Articles Vincenzo "Skulz" Milella April 25, 2022 Meta Reports, Heroes
The days left until the end of the current Overwatch season are indicated in the game client. Season 36 will end on October 4, 2022.
All the Overwatch ranked seasons have a similar duration, so it is rather simple to figure out when the next season will end.
A few days before the end of each season, the Overwatch community manager shares on the Blizzard forums the exact date and time on which the season will end. You can find all the info below.
I will update this page and the countdown as soon as fresh news is available.
It is impossible to predict the exact time of the day, so the countdown below is just an approximation timed to the indicated day.
In the table, you can find the history of the starting and ending date of each season.
A technical issue arose with today’s rollout of Season 27 of Competitive Play. Our team tested a number of fixes, but in the interest of time and allowing players to get back into Competitive Play, we have made the choice to the extend Season 26 a few days.
The season will be tagged with “Season ends in less than a minute” – We anticipate that Season 27 will begin around 11:00 AM PST on Tuesday, March 9.
The Halloween update delayed the season end from October 31st to November 7th.
Starting with Season 19, we are moving the beginning (and end) of competitive play seasons from the 1st of every other month, to the first Thursday of every other month.
We will also be starting the season later in the day to better correspond with developer availability during the day. Season 19 now starts on November 7, at 18:00 UTC (10:00 PST, 13:00 EST).”
Competitive Play: August 31st at 5PM PST (September 1st 00:00 UTC).
Quick Play: September 3rd at 11AM PST.
Quick Play Classic (Arcade Card): September 3rd at 11AM PST.
Hey everyone, when Season 18 went live matchmaking values from prior seasons weren’t being respected. We’re extending the Role Queue Beta Season while we work on a fix for this bug, we expect to be ready for Season 18 early next week.”
— Bill Warnecke - Overwatch Developer
Season 17 will be shortened by approximately two weeks. The Overwatch developers decided to test the new role queue system on the live client during a two-week-long Role Queue Beta Season from August 13 to August 31.
Starting with Season 16 of Competitive Play, Grandmaster players (players with SR >4000) will no longer be able to queue for competitive matches in a party size larger than two.”
— Santiago Baranda - Overwatch Community Manager
As you might have noticed, there is no more an off-season break, so when a competitive season ends the next one will start immediately.
Season 14 will officially end on Thursday, February 28 at 4:00 p.m. PST (Friday, March 1 at 00:00 UTC).
Season 15 is currently scheduled to launch immediately after at Thursday, February 28 at 4:00 p.m. PST (Friday, March 1 at 00:00 UTC).
Season 13 will officially end on Monday, December 31 at 2:00 p.m. PST (Monday, December 31 at 22:00 UTC).
Season 14 is currently scheduled to launch two hours later on Monday, December 31 at 4:00 p.m. PST (Tuesday, January 1 at 00:00 UTC).
The purpose of this page: I got annoyed of skimming articles burying the end date in a long text to keep us longer on the website, so I decided to create a countdown myself. I will update it at the start of each new season. You are welcome :).

Competitive points are one of the currencies in Overwatch , similar to Credits . They can only be used to buy golden weapons . Players stop earning points if they have 6,000 unspent points, though they will still receive their end-of-season rewards. Competitive points are awarded to players for each win or draw in Competitive Play , with an additional end of season bonus based on their season high rank.
