About the Role
EMpower is seeking a Communications Assistant to strengthen how we tell our story and engage supporters globally. This role sits at the intersection of Global Communications, Development (fundraising), and Programs, playing a critical function in translating complex programmatic work into clear, compelling narratives for a range of external audiences.
The successful candidate will support both fundraising and global communications functions by repurposing existing content, producing donor- and partner-facing materials, and ensuring all output meets EMpower’s brand standards. Reporting to the Director of Global Communications and working closely with the Senior Partnerships Manager, Communications & Influence Manager, and Institutional Partnerships Officer, you will also work in collaboration with regional fundraising teams to tailor communications for specific geographic and cultural needs, and help ensure EMpower presents a clear, consistent, and high-quality external voice across all regions and channels.
This is an exciting opportunity for someone who is both a strong writer and a creative thinker, with genuine interest in international development, storytelling, and engagement. As part of a globally distributed team, the primary collaborators for this role are based in Mexico City, New York City, and Delhi.
Key Responsibilities
1. Narrative Translation & Content Development
* Collaborate closely with the Institutional Partnerships Officer to request validated data and narratives for the creation of data-backed impact stories.
* Translate validated data and narratives from reports and data tracking systems into accessible case studies, social media posts, and monthly impact stories that reflect the individual, regional, and systemic outcomes of EMpower’s work.
* Draft and edit high-quality external-facing content, including proposals, pitch materials, one-pagers, impact summaries, and stewardship materials.
* Partner with the Institutional Partnerships Officer to repurpose donor compliance reports into visual summaries, one-pagers, and stewardship collateral for institutional and individual supporters.
* Repurpose and tailor existing materials for different audiences, including individual donors, institutional supporters, corporate sponsors, and peer organizations.
* Manage intake requests for content and support delivery against clear timelines.
2. Brand Stewardship & Quality
* Ensure consistent and accurate use of EMpower’s brand, messaging, and terminology across all external-facing materials, such as concept notes, blog posts, social media content, and institutional, individual, and annual reports.
* Format and produce presentation decks, one-pagers, impact summaries, and partner organization profiles using tools like Canva and PowerPoint.
* Support the production of high-visibility materials, including annual impact reports, event programs, and signage.
* Provide light-touch guidance and edits to strengthen messaging, tone, and narrative consistency across regions and external-facing materials.
* Coordinate with external graphic design contractors or video editors when specialized execution is required.
3. Digital Content & Light Multimedia
* Support development of digital content including newsletters, LinkedIn, and other partner- and donor-facing social content.
* Support short-form video and visual storytelling assets, coordinating with external vendors where needed.
* Ensure strong narrative quality across all formats.
4. Cross-Team Collaboration
* Work closely with Programs teams to translate validated programmatic insights into external-facing assets.
* Route requests for programmatic data and impact narratives through the Institutional Partnerships Officer, who serves as the primary liaison to the Strategy & Impact function, rather than approaching Program Officers directly.
* Partner with Development teams to understand audience needs and support fundraising priorities.
* Collaborate with the Communications team to ensure alignment with brand and broader messaging strategy.
* Help strengthen collaboration across functions and reduce duplication of effort.
5. Tools, Systems & Knowledge Management
* Organize and maintain repositories of stories, photos, and external-facing assets for global team use.
* Support the development of templated materials and messaging guidance.
* Help improve accessibility and usability of content across regions.
* Contribute to internal communications on new tools and resources.
6. Innovation & Continuous Improvement
* Experiment with new formats, tools, and approaches to external communications.
* Explore use of AI and digital tools to improve efficiency and content quality.
* Contribute ideas for improving storytelling, engagement, and internal workflows.
Ways of Working
* Remote-First: This is a remote-first arrangement, with the opportunity for periodic co-working days in person with other members of EMpower’s Mexico City-based team.
* Global Collaboration: Due to the global nature of the team, it is necessary to periodically attend meetings outside of normal working hours to overlap with staff in other time zones, including early mornings and/or late evenings.
Who You Are
* A Proactive Finisher: You are highly organized, detail-oriented, and comfortable managing multiple moving pieces and timelines.
* A Visual Technician: You have a strong aesthetic eye and can follow brand guidelines with precision to create professional-grade materials.
* A Narrative Translator: You have strong storytelling instincts and can adapt complex information into accessible narratives for various audiences.
* A Collaborative Partner: You are proactive in following through on tasks and comfortable working across global functions.
* Curious & Adaptable: You are willing to experiment, learn new tools, and evolve how you work.
Skills & Experience
Core Skills
* Exceptional writing and editing skills, with the ability to communicate clearly and concisely.
* Strong storytelling ability, with an understanding of how to engage external audiences.
* Ability to synthesize complex information into accessible, compelling narratives and adapt for different channels, contexts, and audiences.
* Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
* Strong English fluency required.
Experience & Knowledge
* 1–3 years of experience in communications, marketing coordination, or a related field.
* Interest in international development, philanthropy, or social impact.
* Understanding of (or curiosity about) donor audiences, fundraising communications, and global philanthropy.
* Experience working across teams or functions, or in a globally distributed organization, is a plus.
Technical & Digital Skills
* Proficiency with digital design and presentation tools, specifically Canva and PowerPoint.
* Familiarity with social media and digital content formats.
* Exposure to video content creation or coordination is a plus.
* Strong brand/aesthetic sense and creative eye.
* Interest in using AI tools to enhance content creation and workflows.
What Brings You Energy
* Seeing It Through: You feel a genuine sense of satisfaction when a piece of content is fully finished: polished, on-brand, and out the door. Leaving things half-done or perpetually “almost ready” doesn’t sit well with you.
* Spotting the Story: You are energized by the process of finding what is interesting or meaningful in raw information, whether a program outcome, a grantee update, or a data point, and you instinctively sense how to make it resonate with an audience.
* Making Something from Scratch: You enjoy taking a blank page or a rough brief and shaping it into something compelling, whether a case study, a social post, or a pitch deck, and you don’t need a lot of hand-holding to get there.
* Managing the Queue: Rather than finding a full content calendar or multiple simultaneous deadlines draining, you find energy in working through a list methodically and watching it shrink.
* Raising the Bar on Quality: You take quiet pride in the details: a well-formatted document, a consistent visual, a sentence that lands just right. You hold yourself to a high standard without needing someone else to set it for you.
Employment & Compensation: EMpower offers competitive wages, benefits, and growth opportunities consistent with industry standards. The salary for this position is USD $30,000 per annum, commensurate with experience. Benefits include a flexible package with health and other insurance coverage, a pension plan with employer contribution, paid time off, and work–life balance benefits. This role will be employed through an Employer of Record (EOR).
