The last official revision of the Church of England's Book of Common Prayer was in 1662. It's interesting how they are updating and augmenting their liturgical choices.

I love this version, the contemporary language draws to me. I'm glad that I was able to order it and get it here. :)

Excellent content with more features than I expected.

For those of us brought up on a strict diet of 1662 British Common Prayer book services, this new edition helps us through the maze of modern services while still referring back to what is familiar to us. While much of the Common Worship lacks the pure majesty of the Cranmer language and Biblical scholarship it has much to recommend it. It is accessible to younger folk and has the potential to be very meaningful as an experience of worship to God. Of course no book of prayers and rites would have any life without te total conviction of the Christian way of life as taught throughout the Bible. But this volume is a welcome addition although I note due to the complexity of each rite with all its variants most churches print out service sheets based upon this text but simplifying it so you are not for ever going backwards and forwards in the bigger book. As an aid to private devotion and following the offices of the churche's life it is a great help and a welcome book.

Prayer Books

The Common Worship book is well done and what one would expect from a book with 500 years of faith, tradition and development. The first thing that is apparent is the form factor of the book which is more narrow than the US (Episcopal) or the Australian prayer books. The type face is smaller than the Australian book but the Common Worship is a thinner, more compact volume. The leafs of the Common Worship book are of an ivory stock that gives the book a quite different look than the stark bright white paper of the American and Australian books. Contrasting the paper color, the rubrics are of a bright red font and there is hardly a page that does not have a some heading or direction in red print. Despite the bright color, the font is a humble sans serif throughout. Blank bright red pages clearly separate the book sections. Matching the fonts, the book has two ribbons, one black, one red which are enough. If there is anything missing, it would be a more robust collection of occasional prayers, thanksgivings and blessings. There are 81 each in the US and Australian prayer books but 23 in the Common Worship as I count them.

What came was what I expected. Prompt delivery.

CofE Common Worship

This is a great book, it has helped me no end in preparing Collects and Prayer for a service, it is highly recommended if you lead any part of the CofE service, and the book is still in wide use today.

Daily Prayer is the first daily prayer book in the Church of England's history. It contains a Daily Office - a collection of orders of service designed to be prayed at different points through the day. The services may be prayed individually, in groups, churches or in religious communities. Drawing on the daily Bible readings laid out in the Common Worship Lectionary , they allow Anglicans to link their personal devotions into the shared prayer life of the Church. As well as the more traditional services of Morning, Evening, and Night Prayer, Daily Prayer also offers Prayer During the Day, especially designed for those new to regular liturgical prayer. Each service contains the three key elements of praise, intercession and engagement with Scripture. Prayers are included for both Ordinary Time and the seasons of the Christian year. It contains: The Calendar Prayer During the Day Forms of Penitence Morning and Evening Prayer Night Prayer (Compline) Prayers of Intercession The Litany Collects and Refrains Canticles The Psalter The Lord's Prayer and Apostles' Creed on the inside back cover for quick reference This bonded leather edition of the Daily Office of the Church of England makes a handsome addition to any liturgical bookshelf and is an ideal gift for ordinands, clergy and readers. Bound in crimson leather, it includes a slipcase.

An excellent resource for parish clergy, or lay persons looking for a daily prayer "breviary." Beyond daily prayer, this book contains an amazing number of canticles from theusual and some unusual sources, antiphons for most occasions, and collects for more days than most of us will use. It also gives a wide choice of available daily prayer patterns, from the age-old morning, evening and compline pattern, to combinations of these, or only one daily prayer that combines elements from all the usual offices. One less than satisfactory (but not unusual) limitation is that only "little chapter" readings are included in the book; longer readings require the use of the included lectionary and a Bible, ok for those at home or with their community, but less convenient for travellers as one needs to carry (or find) one more book. But that is a common problem with books of this kind, as to include the lectionary readings either requires printing in a point size that approaces unlegibility, or greatly increased volume and mass. [The only traveller's "breviary" that I have found that is complete in itself is the (Anglican) Franciscan "Celebrating Common Prayer" small travellers' edition, which includes daily scripture readings that are perhaps slighly more than "little chapters", but is otherwise fairly complex to use, given the Franciscan spirituality does not like repetition of much of anything from day to day.] One very small caveat; the description of the book claims leather cover; the cover is a rubberized plastic, which feels very comfortable to the hand, seems to not stain easily, probably is easily cleaned, and is quite attractive; but not leather! Recommended to anyone looking for a daily prayer resource for personal use, or a resource for worship planning; I would also recommend it for consideration to communities that pray together, but since I do not belong to such a community, I suggest independent evaluation.

Exactly what I was looking for. The leather ones are hard to find so was excited to see one here on Amazon.

Common Prayer is, IMHO, the gold standard for Anglican Worship these days (as an American Episcopalian), and Daily Prayer is a beautiful edition to it. I particularly like the use of Mid-day prayer to add poetry and other writings from Christian history outside morning and evening prayer. My one concern is that the binding feels fragile, and I'm hesitant to throw it in a back pack or suitcase to take with me anywhere.

You can find it all on the Church of England website, so buying the book isn't really necessary. But I now have two of them 😍 And I bought a third to give away. For me the highlight is the Psalter. The translation is good, and each psalm has a prayer that goes with it.

Common Worship: Daily Prayer (leather binding) is contemporary (without being faddish), flexible, a great "tool" for prayer, and a joy to use for prayer. The leather binding adds to the experience by its simple lines, as well as the weight and feel of actually holding the book. For those who have experienced the Liturgy of the Hours or the Divine Office, this book will make one feel "at home". For those who have never tried this form of Christian prayer, try beginning with Prayer During the Day, a simplified, yet ample setting. There is no wrong way to use this book. The only thing that is "lacking" is a daily lectionary, but even that is not absolutely necessary.

I was and technically still am a Priest in the Carthusian Order. I went to Catholic schools and was an agnostic most of my life. I was in Italy and at a Monastery and a few books similar to this one were in the Chapel. Someone ask if I needed help in using this one and I said no it was simple and put me in the mood to give Praise and ask for forgiveness for my sins and those of the world. This book changed my life.
