A Look at L-Arginine


L-Arginine is a naturally occurring amino acid. Arginine, or arginol, is a second alpha-amino amino acid that's used in the synthesis of proteins. It includes an alpha-amino amino group, an alpha-keto acid, and a transposition group containing two carbon atoms in either a trans or a gamma-keto arrangement. In a recent study done by the US National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal Disease, it was shown that excessive doses of l-arginine can cause serious adverse effects in some patients. In this study, researchers examined the use of l-arginine in combination with dosages up to thousands of grams per day. The results were startling: in ninety percent of the studied patients, doses of up to five thousand milligrams or more per day were needed to prevent or reduce disability and/or symptoms. The most common symptoms associated with prolonged use of l-arginine were loss of appetite, depression, decreased mental acuity, muscle weakness, increased need for sleep, joint stiffness, and headaches.

In order to avoid these life-threatening side effects, it's crucial to know when l-arginine is appropriate and when it's not. Generally speaking, it's safe to ingest moderate dosages on a daily basis as long as you take your dose with food. In other words, if you eat food that contains L-arginine at dinner, then you're okay. But when you consume L-arginine by itself, it is considered a source that may be unhelpful in certain circumstances, such as the treatment of critical illness or injury. If you're taking L-arginine to treat an underlying condition, it's best to talk to your doctor first to make sure that taking the amino acid in supplemental form is appropriate.

L-arginine has recently been discovered to have some unique properties, which may be useful in treating conditions like cardiovascular disease and hypertension. As mentioned above, those taking up to five thousand milligrams daily of L-arginine in supplements were found to be less likely to develop or suffer from depression in comparison to those who took a placebo. More specifically, l-arginine seems to act as an amino acid in enhancing nitric oxide production in the body. Nitric oxide is one of the chemicals that allow the vessels inside your body to transport blood through them effectively. In addition to its ability to improve nitric oxide production, L-arginine has also been shown to enhance blood flow as well. This means that taking up to five thousand milligrams of the amino acid on a regular basis could help lower high blood pressure. While the effects of L-arginine aren't entirely clear yet, those who take the recommended dosage show an improvement in blood flow to their extremities, including the hands, feet, and ankles.

In addition to helping athletes achieve better athletic performance, L-arginine has also been used to treat other conditions like circulatory issues and anxiety. Those taking up to five grams each day have reported feeling more calm and less anxious, even during intense sporting activities like cycling, tennis, or football. However, taking up to twenty grams of L-arginine daily hasn't been proven yet as a means to cure circulatory problems. Another area where L-arginine has shown promise is in reducing anxiety, particularly for those suffering from chronic depression. One study reported that participants who took up to twenty grams of L-arginine daily had lower levels of anxiety than those who didn't take the supplement.

As with everything else, too much L-arginine may not be good for you. People with kidney disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and even pregnant women should exercise caution by using l-arginine long term. L-arginine can potentially increase the risk of serious side effects, so people with these conditions should consult their physician before taking up to twenty grams a day. Additionally, while some studies have found that L-arginine might be beneficial for patients with erectile dysfunction, it's unclear if these findings are due to a true deficiency in the amino acid or if the supplement was improperly formulated.

L-arginine is still being studied, but the supplement may hold other benefits as well. For example, it has been found that L-arginine enhances nitric oxide production and may help treat conditions such as gastritis and some types of arthritis. Preliminary evidence also suggests that L-arginine could work as an anti-aging treatment, since its ability to improve blood flow may help increase the formation of new blood vessels and reduce the buildup of old vessels near the blood vessel walls. More research into the health benefits of L-arginine is needed.
