Comment by HE Ambassador of Russia to Sri Lanka and in the Republic of Maldives Mr. Levan Dzhagaryan

The Embassy paid attention to the recent unacceptable tweet by former President of Maldives Maumoon Abdul Gayoom in which he expresses confusion with lack of the UN Security Council reaction to the “latest massive air attacks of Russia on Ukraine”.

First of all, I'd like to suggest the ex-head of state studies the reasons of the Special Military Operation by the Russian Armed Forces, namely the NATO intensively approaching the Russian frontiers and neo-nazi nature of the Kiev regime. I kindly remind to Mr. Gayoom that the barbarian actions by Zelensky administration lead to numerous victims among the civic population of Donbass. One should wonder why Mr. Gayoom is not bothered by these issues.

Besides, I take this opportunity to bring Mr. Gayoom attention to the fact that back in March 2022 in Istanbul Russia and Ukraine were close to peaceful settlement of the conflict. However, the USA and United Kingdom disrupted the talks and instructed Zelensky to continue the war. In total it is 4 times that our country came forward with peaceful initiatives. The last one was announced by H.E. President of Russia Mr. Vladimir Putin in June.

I strongly call Mr. Gayoom to refrain from following the policy of double standards traditionally pursued by the collective West. The ex-politician had better express his indignation with the UN Security Council inability to put an end to the Palestinian people sufferings in the Gaza Strip "thanks" to one country negative stance.

In contrast to Mr. Gayoom's doubtful approach we highly appreciate the principled position of the current government of Maldives on the Palestinian issue and its humanitarian efforts.
