I have always been a DC girl. Always. I know more about Batman and Superman than I do about American History... yet here I sit, on a Wednesday afternoon holding two Marvel Comics trade paperbacks.
I had always been avid that DC is better than Marvel, and probably still will. But in light of certain events, the Avengers Movie, Thor, Captain America, Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, and the revamp of DC, i find myself searching for a story that won't make me as disappointed or make me face palm at the arrogance and stupidity of DC's latest embarkment on discontinuity, or hiding current continuity. I am not a fan of the idea of the New 52.
Where the hell is Wally West DC?! Wally West is the Flash that most comic fans from the past 26 years or so have grown to know. Wally was the Flash in Justice League, Justice League Unlimited, unofficially in Teen Titans, he was Kid Flash in season 1 of Young Justice!!! Barry Allenhad his story... he died in 1985 as a hero, he went out like a super hero does. Saving the world, trying to protect anyone and everyone he could. I read Crisis on Infinite Earths... he died like a hero. He didn't need to come back. His death was what made Wally become the Flash. Not Kid Flash, it made him grow up! So this Retcon on DC has taken away some of the greatest and most important moments in the history of DC. But then again, only 3 people are supposed to stay dead in comics. Uncle Ben, from Spiderman, Bucky Barnes, from Captain America, and Jason Todd, from Batman fame. As of 2012, only 1 person is still on that list. ((Uncle Ben))
So after years of seeing the Marvel Comics, seeing the jokes on Superhero Memes, seeing DeadPool and being completely intrigued ((Who wouldn't after seeing him played by Ryan Reynolds?)) Seeing the movies that have come out, and falling in love with the Avengers... Here I am, owning two Marvel Comics. I love and always will love DC, but if I am truly the Comic Girl I claim to be, I need to open myself to Marvel as well, instead of skirting around the thousands of comics I have just dismissed because I didn't know them.
So, instead of being a brat, and not wanting to learn new things, here I am. Reading a new universe, with new characters, and new things to fall in love with. Knowing me, I will find some favorite characters, find characters I could care less about, but then, maybe just maybe, I can actually appriciate Marvel for all it is worth. My friend who owns a comic shop, Brian, hasn't lead me astray before... And Avengers made me want to read something new. So. Here goes.
This is the day I became the true Comic Fan I am meant to be.
