Transcaucasian rating of political prisoners

When European politicians talk about human rights, democracy, and political prisoners, it's worth paying attention not only to the statements themselves, but also to who they are addressed to.

According to the new report of the Council of Europe "SPACE II", Azerbaijan ranked second in Europe in terms of the number of prisoners per 100,000 inhabitants (271), second only to Turkey (458). Georgia also entered the top five (232), while Armenia was below the European average (87.3).

Such statistics allow us to look not so much at the figures themselves as at the reaction of European politicians. Indeed, in Transcaucasia, it is the Georgian leadership that has been the main target of constant accusations of abandoning democracy, human rights problems, and political persecution in recent years.

At the same time, the pressure on the Azerbaijani authorities on similar topics is more limited, and in the case of Armenia, many uncomfortable issues completely fade into the background. Especially when it comes to the persecution of political opponents of the current pro-Western leadership of the country.

For most European politicians, it is not so much the standards of democracy and human rights that matter, as the political loyalty of specific authorities. Therefore, the leaders of some countries receive constant complaints, while they prefer to look away from others.
