Come Play With Cosplay
Cosplay takes Halloween to a whole new level of FUN! Cosplay is the act of dressing up as a character or concept and sometimes, it can be even more than just dressing up as your favorite character. Some cosplayers may even ‘role-play’ as their character as well! By copying their mannerisms, speech, and gestures, cosplay can go above and beyond cosplay costumes!
Besides the textbook definition of cosplay and cosplay costumes, what does it really mean to immerse yourself within a character? When cosplaying, you may have to ask why you are choosing the character/concept to cosplay as. Do you relate to them? Are you inspired by them? Is this your way of connecting to their story? By cosplaying someone or something, it may bring you one step closer to being in that character’s “universe” if you will. When cosplaying something out of your favorite video game, you may have already felt like you truly were that character when playing, and to bring it one step further by cosplaying them? Sign me up! The same goes for when you cosplay anything from your favorite Nancy Drew game! It can help you to become that character or concept and really immerse yourself in their world. It can be how they walk, talk, or even just what they represent can help you fully become what you are cosplaying! Through cosplay, you can be whoever or whatever you want to be, making it even more fun!
When it comes to Nancy Drew cosplay, the options. Are. ENDLESS! I quite literally just went through each game in attempts to find “outside the box” cosplays and came up with over 90 different ideas! From different members of the Penvellyn family to your favorite character from Karl’s Raid, you could dress up as a different character from Nancy Drew just about every day of the year! The games themselves contain over 300 characters! Who do you think you could cosplay?
By now, even writing this is making me want to get into the cosplay of Brigitte Penvellyn with telescope and all! Maybe even Hotchkiss as a reason to have a drumstick or two (or 50… kidding!). If you too are thinking of ideas for your next cosplay, look no further! We have been working hard on putting together an entire board for you all in order to find inspiration, ideas and materials for all the Nancy Drew cosplay you can think of! You can find that HERE!
If you are interested in putting your own Nancy Drew cosplay together this month, we invite you to send your submissions in for our 31 Days of Cosplay Contest! You can learn more details about how to enter the contest HERE on the different categories of the contest and how to submit your cosplay! These cosplays can consist of anything from the games, and we mean ANYTHING! From your favorite character, bento box treats, to just about any other concept in the Nancy Drew games we know and love. Here are the following categories for the contest:
1. Makeup + Special Effects: show off your cosplay skills with movie makeup or special effects. Example: dress up as the Creature from Castle Malloy. (Picture or Video submission. One winner chosen.)
2. Best Costume: this could be the most Nancy Drew themed, the funniest, or the most creative costume. Example: you could be Professor Hotchkiss eating 50 chicken wings or the sword Nancy brings Ned from Iceland. (Picture or Video submission. One winner chosen.)
3. Video Submission: create any costume but present it in a creative video form. (One winner chosen.)
Each winner of the three categories has the possibility of winning some AMAZING prizes! After reading this … are you ready to cosplay?! Who or what do YOU think you could cosplay next? The Nancy Drew “Drewniverse” allows you endless ideas of cosplay fun! We look forward to seeing all your submissions and happy cosplaying!

Think Halloween costume but all year-round and then dial it up to 11 – that sort of comes close to what cosplay is. Here’s everything you need to know about the cosplay sensation that’s storming the world!
Cosplay is the act of dressing up as a character or concept. People who do it regularly are called ‘cosplayers’. Cosplayers may also go above and beyond copying their character’s outfits – they might even ‘role-play’ as characters, copying their mannerisms and gestures.
Cosplay, both of anime characters and live action shows, has become quite popular.
Although the term was coined in the 1980s, the practice of cosplaying has its roots in early 15th century carnivales where people dressed up as objects, concepts, famous historical figures, or popular characters from fiction or stage plays.
Cosplay as we know it today (or fan costuming) started at the 1st World Science Fiction Convention. Contemporary cosplay follows in this tradition and is often done at comic or pop culture conventions, like at San Diego Comic-Con.
Now, with shows like Marvel's WandaVision and The Falcon and The Winter Soldier , cosplay is getting becoming more and more mainstream.
One of the aims of cosplay is to portray a character. You can do this ‘accurately’ by copying a character’s exact look, down to the details. You can also put your own creative spin on it! Cosplayers achieve their looks through a mixture of costumes, wigs, accessories, and props.
Even as recent as 15 or 20 years, all things ‘geeky’ like comics and cosplaying were considered a little uncool. But today, the cosplay community is bigger than ever. Not only are more people getting into cosplay, but cosplay itself is becoming more and more lucrative.
A lot of top-tier cosplayers like Enji Night, Hana Bunny, or Jessica Nigri have made cosplaying their career. They get paid to dress up, attend cons, and even promote brands!

There are cosplayers of all ages! A lot of people start out cosplaying when they’re young, but you’ll also find older people (some with families of their own) attending cosplay events and dressing up.
Cosplay is open to people of all genders, orientations, and expressions. You’ll even find cosplayers ‘cross-dressing’ or ‘gender-swapping’ where they dress up as a character of the opposite sex.
One of the criticisms lodged at cosplay is that some people take it into over-sexualised territory. These cosplayers get accused of ‘objectifying’ themselves or dressing up as the ‘hot’ version of a character just for clicks and likes. Cosplay isn’t inherently misogynist, but if you’re uncomfortable with sexy cosplays, stick to standard versions of non-sexy characters.
Another issue within the cosplay community is the debate on cosplaying a character of a different race. People of all backgrounds can cosplay, so it does happen very frequently that their favourite character might not be of the same ethnicity. As long as you cosplay with respect (and avoid black/brownface), it’s okay to cosplay a character of a different skin colour or nationality.
The great news is that there are cosplay events all over the world – even in countries where you least expect it. Most pop culture conventions like comic-con, video game cons, and more are open to cosplayers. In Australia, Oz Comic-Con, Supanova, and PAX Australia are just a handful of events you can check out. Some even have cosplay competitions where the best cosplays get a prize!
Other kinds of cosplay events include live action-role playing events, historical reenactments, Renaissance faires, D&D game sessions, and the like.

Cosplay is generally an expensive hobby since you need to shell out for costumes, wigs, and more. But if you’re resourceful and a bit handy, you can save a lot of money by making your own outfits and props. You can also do something called ‘closet cosplay’ which is using clothes you already own to recreate a character’s costume or do a ‘casual’ version.
Cosplay is popular all over the world, but it’s most popular in the United States, South Korea, and China. However, no one quite does it like the Japanese, where cosplay isn’t just a hobby – it’s part of the culture. This is not surprising, especially since anime is one of the most popular sources of cosplay inspiration.

A pair of male cosplayers doing a raunchy Pokémon cosplay.
A cosplay of Mercy's Halloween outfit in Overwatch.
A cosplayer dressed as Ashe from Overwatch.
A cosplayer dressed as fan-created Mario character, Bowsette.
A pair of cosplayers posing as My Hero Academia's Deku and Todoroki.

A Daenerys Targaryen cosplay from Game of Thones.
Someone cosplaying as 2B from Nier Automata.
Someone cosplaying as 2B from Nier Automata, sword and all.
Someone cosplaying as a casual cat-like Erin from Attack on Titan.
While a lot of cosplayers really take it seriously, your own cosplay can be whatever you want it to be. That’s the great thing about cosplay – you honour your favourite characters in your own special way.
