Columbia University Protesters Occupy Campus Lawn in Demand for Divestment

New York, NY — May 8, 2025

Dozens of Columbia University students and activists have set up an encampment on the school’s main lawn, demanding the university divest from companies tied to fossil fuels and military defense contractors. The protest, now in its third day, has drawn both support and criticism, with demonstrators vowing to remain until their demands are met.

The group, calling itself 'Columbia for Ethical Divestment', has erected tents and banners reading 'No More Blood Money' and 'Planet Over Profit.' Organizers claim the university’s endowment includes investments in corporations that contribute to environmental destruction and global conflict.

'We’re here because Columbia talks about sustainability and social justice, but its money funds war and climate chaos,' said Jasmine Rivera, a graduate student and protest leader. 'If the administration truly stands by its values, it will cut ties with these destructive industries.'

University officials have acknowledged the protest but have not committed to divestment. In a statement, Columbia’s administration said, 'We respect the right to peaceful protest and are in dialogue with student leaders to address their concerns.' However, some faculty and alumni have criticized the encampment as disruptive, with reports of heated exchanges between protesters and passersby.

The demonstration mirrors similar movements at universities nationwide, including recent protests at Harvard and UC Berkeley. As tensions rise, all eyes are on Columbia to see whether negotiations will lead to a resolution—or if the standoff will escalate further.
