Over the summer in college I lived in a 4 person dorm with a couple of my teammates. One of them would just loudly announce he's going to go jerk off in the bedroom and no one should come in.
Is it common for two people to share a dormitory room? A friend went to Michigan Tech in the 1980's. At least back then - that school had a policy of "overbooking" the freshman class , accepting more students than there were dorm rooms available.
If you need the room to yourself, ask your roommate beforehand or develop a system that both of you are comfortable with.
When you make your schedule only pick classes that meet on MWF. That way you'll have tuesdays and thursday free. You can handle business when your roomie is in class and it gives 2 free days to do your class work and study. You could also schedule classes in the late morning and afternoon. Most people have 8-10 AM classes. If possible, pay extra for a private room.

This was NOT a shared room but I did share a bathroom with 3 others. This was the cheapest accommodation that the university offered, sharing a room wasn't even an option available.
Do Americans really tend to share rooms with another student when they go to university (I think you guys call it college), or is this just a thing in films and TV?

After knob/freshman year it's better in terms of hazing as there really isn't any at that point. Don't get me wrong sophomore year is the worst but there's not a lot of hazing (abusive and tyrannical behavior) just normal military school suck.
