The complete healing process of a cold sore might take 7-10 days. However, the process may be shortened with the use of antiviral medications.
The assumption that cold sores can only be spread to the mouth area is a common misconception. Unfortunately, the virus that causes cold sores, herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV1), can also cause genital herpes .
Giving or receiving oral sex when someone has a cold sore can increase the risk of genital herpes. There are two types of herpes viruses , herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV1) and herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV2). HSV1 is more commonly associated with oral herpes, and HSV2 is associated with genital herpes. However, HSV1 can cause genital herpes as well.
Many people are very familiar with the uncomfortable and common oral blisters that can form on the lips, tongue, or mouth. These blisters are commonly called cold sores and are caused by HSV1.
The World Health Organization reports that globally, nearly 67 percent of people under 50 have HSV1 (that’s 3.7 billion people).HSV1 is thought to be at its most contagious when someone has a visible sore or blister. So, it is best not to kiss or have intimate direct contact with someone with an active cold sore.
The complete healing process of a cold sore might take 7-10 days. However, the process may be shortened with the use of antiviral medications. The indication that it’s safer to have oral sex is when the cold sore is nowhere to be seen.
The scab and flakiness should be completely gone and the skin should show no signs of the cold sore. If performing oral sex, there should be no visible sign of a cold sore, as well as no symptoms of an oncoming cold sore.
If you have a cold sore or any symptoms of a cold sore, do not perform oral sex to lessen the risk of spreading HSV1 to your partner’s genitals. Regardless of a current outbreak, herpes can be spread by way of asymptomatic shedding , but the risks are much higher when an active outbreak is present. It’s best to use condoms and/or dental dams during oral sex to protect both yourself and your partner.
Around day five of the process, the cold sore is at its most contagious. During the stage called “weeping” a cold sore releases contagious fluid . If this fluid comes in contact with skin, the virus can spread very easily. If your partner gets cold sores, Planned Parenthood says it’s best to use a condom during oral sex and wait until cold sores are totally healed.
Strut offers Free Online Doctor’s Visits with our licensed medical team. Every day we help people navigate HSV1 and HSV2 treatment. We offer Valacyclovir as an antiviral treatment. This prescription may speed up the outbreak healing process and might help prevent future outbreaks.
If our doctors think you are a good candidate, Strut can ship your prescription right to your door.

You should know: The answer above provides general health information that is not intended to replace medical advice or treatment recommendations from a qualified health care professional.
A year ago, I gave my guy friend a blow job. There was no ejaculatory fluid involved, and no vaginal sex.
However, here's what has me worried: I had a cold sore on my lip at the time. I've read that sores increase your risk of contracting HIV. I've also read that the risk of transmitting HIV orally is very low, and that once you cut semen out of the picture, the risk then becomes EXTREMELY low. Is this true?
PS - I'm sure you're going to address the fact that performing oral on someone while having a cold sore could pass on Genital HSV-1 and that I should not have done that. Not to worry, the same boy I am speaking about also gave me my first cold sore weeks earlier (we were monogamously hooking up). Meaning he had already had HSV-1 in his system for a while.
Hi
The risk of HIV transmission with oral sex is extremely low. It is even reasonable to state that for the person receiving oral sex (that is on whom oral sex is being performed) the risk of acquisition of the virus is practically zero. For the person placing his or her mouth on someone else's genitals, the risk may be slightly higher but still very very low. Theoretically, obvious cuts, wounds, sores, or infections in the mouth could raise this risk. But relatively speaking this is still considered to be a low-risk sexual activity as the mouth is not a hospitable place for the HIV virus. Please note that other sexually transmitted infections are readily spread via oral contact and you may need to be checked for these.

Can I give blowjobs if I've had coldsores?

Can I give blowjobs if I've had coldsores?

Watch this thread

Right, as the title says really. I had coldsores as a kid, I haven't had one for ages, but some people say you can still transmit them when they're not active. But most people gte coldsores, so.

Also, if you have warts on your hand, and you give someone a handjob, can you give them genital warts?

I know this sounds stupid, and maybe I'm worrying too much, I have OCD and get paranoid about diseases. But I'm terrified I'll never be able to do anything other than actual sex because of this, and it'll put people off. Thanks.

Erm, you're wrong there.

Cold sores are outbreaks of oral herpes. Oral herpes is a virus - you never get rid of it. Hence, if you've once HAD a cold sore once in your life, even if it was 20 years ago, then you still HAVE oral herpes and can transmit it to a partner through oral sex.

If you have a current cold sore, you are more infectious. But even if you haven't had a cold sore for 20 years, at times, you are still infectious even now.

A mouth ulcer is a different thing entirely.

"HSV can also cause pharyngitis, an inflammation of the throat with similar ulcer formation. HSV is highly infectious and usually sexually transmitted. It is certainly transmitted by penetrative intercourse but there are several reports of transmission through oral sex. Virus particles are shed profusely from ulcers, either oral (including cold sores) or genital, and infection is far more likely when these are present. Transmission is unlikely, but not impossible, in the absence of ulcers."

Additionally, I wouldn't describe transmission in the absence of ulcers as unlikely. Studies of people contracting herpes have indicated that around 70% of people caught it from a partner not showing symptoms.

(Original post by Anonymous )
Using PCR testing, which is the most accurate test, the herpes virus has been isolated on the skin of people with the virus on up to 70% of days.

(Original post by thisismycatch22 )
well, yeah, but that doesn't mean it's likely. most people being struck by lightning were walking in thunderstorms. that doesn't mean thunderstorms are a big lightning threat, it just means it's harder to be struck by lightning anywhere else. the risk is about 5-10% per couple per year who abstain from sore sex so casual one off things are unlikely.

PCR as well as being accurate is also very sensitive and will pick up levels of virus that may not be high enough to infect people as likely as during levels during shedding. the risk drastically rises during shedding

So all people who've ever had cold sores have herpes?

That's actually disgusting.

ULCERS /=/ COLDSORES.

They just don't.
Ulcers are not caused by herpes.
