Local Hero Cody Balmer Saves Stranded Hiker in Dramatic Mountain Rescue

Aspen, Colorado – April 14, 2025

In a heart-stopping rescue mission yesterday, 28-year-old Cody Balmer, an experienced outdoorsman and volunteer with the Aspen Mountain Rescue Team, saved a stranded hiker from near-certain disaster on the treacherous cliffs of Maroon Peak.

The hiker, identified as 34-year-old Daniel Reyes from Denver, had been attempting a solo ascent when he lost his footing and slid down a steep ice chute, leaving him stranded on a narrow ledge at 12,500 feet. With temperatures dropping and Reyes suffering from mild hypothermia, rescuers feared the worst—until Balmer stepped in.

Using his advanced technical climbing skills, Balmer rappelled down the unstable slope in near-whiteout conditions, securing Reyes and helping him to safety before a sudden snowstorm moved in.

'Cody’s bravery and quick thinking saved my life,' Reyes said from Aspen Valley Hospital, where he is recovering from minor frostbite. 'I owe him everything.'

Balmer, known among locals for his humility, downplayed his actions. 'Just doing my job,' he said. 'Nobody gets left behind out here.'

The Aspen Mountain Rescue Team has praised Balmer’s heroism, calling the rescue 'one of the most dangerous operations in recent memory.'

For now, Balmer is back on duty—ready for whatever the mountains throw his way.
