*SPOILERS review* I know this movie is more of a closure for the 'recap' OVAs that the series had, but you don't need to watch them to watch this flick. Really, Shirley being alive here is basically irrelevant because she's in all of 15 seconds of footage and does nothing for the plot that anyone else couldn't have been subbed in for. I've pretty much disregarded the idea that she exists in this movie as a result, and I don't stress about how the film essentially negates how her death in the original series was a big catalyst for the plot there. To me, she's still dead. That said, this movie is...okay? Like if you don't know how detail-oriented the series was, and how often we got to follow Zero's plans through (even if we only got to know the finer details after it all came together,) then this movie is alright. I do feel like many others who have commented, that this film feels like a highlights reel of a bigger, longer event. There could've easily been another 2 hours on this to have it make better sense and have better pacing. Being 'in the room' as Lelouch figured out what Shamna's Geass was, was basically a non-event, and to me, that's really the only major flaw in this film's plot. Figuring out how to counteract her Geass should've been the plot's climax, not something to gloss over with a few montages of Lelouch counting down the numbers, without seeing how he rationalizes each possible Geass type based on the setbacks he deals with. We see a tiny handful of setbacks, but not enough to get us to 'she can go back 6 hours in her life every time she dies,' since so far as we know, Lelouch never saw her die once, nor did we see what else happened to get Lelouch to narrow down the abilities to that specificity. In fact, it was actually kind of vague what the power did until very late in the movie. Until then, the viewer may be left to believe that *everyone* goes back, not just Shamna, and replays the event again from 6 hours prior. It made the break-down kind of confusing, since the viewer is left assuming C.C. is the only one who *doesn't* experience the set-back, when in actuality, *no one* did, because the Geass doesn't have to be cast on others to work. In fact, only Shamna experienced the change. Everyone else implicitly felt the impact of that fact. So, really, you just kind of have to shrug at the end and be like 'oh that Lelouch, got her backed up into a corner that she somehow couldn't fix with yet another 6 hours to prepare for it...like leaving her palace.' So, basically, Lelouch won because the writers said so, not because they really explained how he figured out Shamna's power and counteracted it. The animation was very good and they've done a spectacular job with integrating CGI Knightmare frames; it really was hard to tell at times which was cell animation and which was CG rendered, and I normally see the transitions pretty easily. In any event, it was a fun new bit of Code Geass to watch...I only wish I knew that Amazon didn't have the original Japanese audio available. The English dub is decent but Lelouch's Japanese voice is *deep* and hearing him yell out "LELOUCH VI BRITANNIA GA MEIJIRU..." always gave me goosebumps. In English, not so much. In fact, it's a little hard to tell who's who when you aren't looking at them talking, and it seemed to me that a lot of the female cast was assigned to the wrong character. Lower voices given to younger characters, etc. Oh well.

It's quite significant that I would be willing to watch a movie for a series I hate so very much just because of the sheer potential the future of a stale and weathered franchise that realistically almost nobody cares about anymore has. But the major flaws from the original series are there. Never mind that Kallen didn't become a child murderer in this universe. Her character still has no depth and is exclusively used for being objectified--despite her ugly character design. (There, I said it!) Plans are contrived and never properly explained so that the fans are continuously impressed by something surprising happening. At one point, there's the trademark Code Geass shock value where some female guards only clad in bikinis and carrying spears for defense are mercilessly gunned down by our ever-so-respectable heroes Lelouch and CC who burst through the wall in a Knightmare frame. But don't worry! It's all fixed with some admittedly creative time-travel shenanigans, which eventually spirals into more unexplained vague tactics that the audience is just supposed to assume is smart because Lelouch came up with the idea to figure out the diverging timelines. And, obviously, there's the infamous beam spamming "strategy." Have an enemy too big to fight honorably? Get a giant freaking gun and wipe them all out without giving them a chance to fight back or retreat and subsequently give all of us Suzaku haters traumatic flashbacks from when he murdered his allies and friends Monica and Dorothea in THE moment that sapped any reason for us to like the idiot completely away. And speaking of the Best Wasted Girls (Rest in Peace or be revived to 'give justice equally' someday, you two--and hopefully Bismarck; the poor guy hated warfare yet Suzaku didn't give a crap about morality or his own humanity anymore for some stupid reason--an Eleven, in the very end) it continues the tradition of killing off sympathetic antagonists. SPOILERS HERE: Not that I only would have loved to have kept Shamna alive just because of her looks (She's WAY hotter than CC, Code Geass Nutters! A goddess from head to toe!) but in the end it was revealed--and the viewer can partially figure it out--that she wasn't truly a bad person and was only trying to help her country despite how selfish she acted. In a way, she was a victim of her own ambitions and likely could have redeemed herself. Then there's the reason why she COMPLETELY died (weird, vague, interdimensional stuff I must have forgotten about from turning my brain off during season 2)--it just HAPPENS! Her brother dies . . . so SHE dies? Was there a metaphysical connection the viewer is never shown? We're just assumed to not have the mental capacity to question this and the dramatic moment passes before cutting to the conclusion of the battle. The only ones who are going to like this are Code Geass fans who are hungry for more content and never question plot holes or morally unsound decisions. For the rest of us, just hope that the new content moving forward is FAR better than it was previously, which is not a very high bar to clear. Also, advocate for at least Monica and Dorothea to be resurrected so they can finally grant Suzaku his death wish with Gino by their side. He's had it coming for more than a decade, and these wasted characters deserve to have closure and FINALLY some proper development instead of just being cannon fodder for someone they cared about.

This movie doesn't follow the extremely conclusive anime series of the first and second season (R1 and R2). This is a sequel to the recap movies named "Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion I: Initiation" and "Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion II -- Transgression". These two movies summarize and change some aspects of the original 2006-2008 anime. I recommend watching the recap movies before watching this because of the startling aspects that are 'norm' in the slightly different universe. I personally love this franchise because of my childhood exposure to this show and I likely this show more just because I was able to get more content from the Code Geass universe. In a more objective light, this movie takes place during one large event (use that information how you will). I am not saying that is a good or bad thing but you should set your expectations to a more open prospective view. Back to the objective note I think that the creators (designers, voice actors, writers, etc.) stayed faithful to what is a pretty vague universe and expanded upon it very well. As of this date I understand that there are plans to release more movies and maybe a series or mini-series which should be exciting for any fan of the show especially because of how true the writers are staying to the original vision. If you managed to read through this I congratulate you and hope you enjoy the movie! :)

Honestly, as a long time fan of the series and the finale of S2 I never noticed how much of a lack of closure I really needed from the end of the story. I accepted what happened originally and the outcome of the situations. The inevitable emotional roller coaster of events. However after I watched this movie I felt a sense of closure that I was not expecting. The moment Lelouch made his last statement to C2 before the credits I started to tear up. It felt like something was fulfilled after all this time and allowed me to accept the closure of the situation. I loved the after credits scene, reminding me of the moment Lelouch heard those words directed at him. As the cycle continues. So all I have to say is I am happy with this ending and the world being left to imagination. If they went out of their way to create a S3 or even a new story in the universe with a certain character being the mysterious person to the main character granting them a contract, I would watch that too. Thank you to the writers of this movie and series. Thank you for giving me countless hours of entertainment as I watch it over and over again. Thank you for the movies and a feeling of completeness.

The price of the movie was affordable with high quality streaming on my Amazon Prime movie app. The movie itself I did like and I didn't like at the sametime, but I don't blame Amazon for that. I love the anime series of Code Geass. However, this movie could have be better with a better storyline plot. The movie just felt like more fan service. This storyline kind of messes up the original storyline of the Code Geass season series. I like the fact that Lelouch did survive the ending of season 2. However, this movie storyline is an alternative plot that changes too much from the original anime series. I won't give story plot spoilers here, but if you go back to watch the original two season of the Code Geass anime and then go watch this movie you will see the disappointment that I am talking about with this movie. I gave it 3 stars because Lelouch surviving is a good thing. However, the way that the story was put together could have been so much better without creating an alternative timeline of the storyline plot.

I have been trying to find a way to watch this movie for about 6 months. Hard to find. I am so THANKFUL that Amazon had this movie to rent in ENGLISH on PRIME. I loved this movie, and have already started REWATCHING IT. Touching story, C2 and Lelouches relatioship moved my heart and brought me to tears. "You put your body on the line for me.... Just because you can't die, doesnt mean your your pain is any less of a sacrifice" -Lelouche to C2. If you love the original series, you will probably love THIS sequel. Even though it is part of a slightly different timeline. I have not seen the other 3 movies, only the original series. But i was still able to follow along. And enjoyed this just as much. This makes me want to see the other 3 movies with the alternate timeline now. ALL HAIL LELOUCHE!!!
