One of Grahamstown's best-loved landmarks, The Cock House offers you country home comfort and elegant dining in South Africa’s Festival City. Built in 1826, this charming Victorian home has been lovingly restored and is a declared National Monument. Accommodation consists of nine double en-suite rooms and four spacious two-bedroom apartments with kitchens, lounges and dining areas. The warm and welcoming main house features a cosy pub, a lounge/library and Norden's Restaurant. Norden's is renowned for its innovative menu offering delicious South African cuisine, complemented by an excellent wine selection. Since opening in 1991, many guests have returned to the convivial atmosphere of The Cock House, including President Nelson Mandela on three occasions. Linking the Garden Route and the Wild Coast, a two to three night stay is recommended to enjoy Frontier Country, the Sunshine Coast and nearby game reserves such as Addo Elephant National Park.

Don’t let the outside or the location hold you back... once inside and seated, this is truly a hidden culinary gem of Grahamstown! A lovely welcome and service, and clearly dishes cooked with love and care.

I was so sad that my trip to South Africa was cancelled due to the CoronaVirus. The Cock House waived their cancellation policy and granted me a full refund. This is excellent customer service! I will definitely be staying here when I rebook my trip for later this year.

Beautiful old historic house. We had 2 rooms in the old part, huge rooms, comfortable beds. Decided to have dinner at their restaurant, it was a good choice. Fish of the day was very tasty. Comfortable hotel with very friendly staff.
Room Tip: Loved the old rooms above the lounge.

Great place to stay with a small yet great menu. Hosts are very accommodating and even laid a special table for my birthday. In cold weather, you arrive to find a warm and inviting room. Crisp and clean percale linen assists to make you sleep like a baby.

While Makhanda is looking very disheveled due to terrible municipal mismanagement (which will, hopefully, be fixed soon), The Cock House retains its air of grace and history and rooms 1 to 5 (we stayed in 2) are spacious and comfortable and open onto the pretty garden (and the jasmine was flowering, making everything wonderfully fragrant!) The staff were lovely and I especially need to mention Chris, the gardener, who was incredibly helpful, carrying our luggage and guiding us out of the parking area. He’s a gem. The Cock House is under new management so, hopefully, it will continue to be a top spot and get even better! Best of luck to Yvonne and her team.
