This is now an old story but worth posting. There was a drug bust in Skopelos about two weeks ago. Here is the authorless account translated mostly by google directly from Taxydromos newspaper of Volos. The Department Narcotics Police Directorate Volos Magnesia in cooperation with the Police Department Skopelos and Volos Port Authority conducted yesterday in Skopelos, a coordinated police operation to combat drug trafficking. As part of this operation were arrested on three different raids, a total of six nationals; four 26 year olds, a 32 year old and a 48 year old. They were arrested for the offenses of growing cannabis seedlings, possession and trafficking of drugs, and violation of the Arms Act. Those arrested will be brought to Prosecutor Volos, while the preliminary investigation conducted by the Department of Narcotics Volos. As a picture is worth a thousand words, SkopelosNews has taken special interest in the photos which accompany each story. Sometimes it is a file photo of handcuffs with an out of focus ferry in the background and sometimes there are photos which appear to be evidence photos for use in court. So this post is less about the story of the raid but a discussion of the organization of evidence for photographing. Luckily for us the police press release included at least two tabletop evidence photos which deserve analysis and discussion about what make a good evidence photo. Due to the low resolution of the printed photos, what you see is what you get. Most likely higher resolution photos exist for presentation in court. This seems to be the first of the two taken hurriedly at one of the raid locations. The table is in rough shape and the evidence is organized haphazardly. The pot plants serve as a backdrop in both photos. The lighting is harsh. There is a smart phone which is placed in the foreground and the cheaper phones in back and the money difficult to count. There has also been some tampering with the photo as something on the right side has been blurred a member of the canine unit? A more serious, better organized presentation. An additional bird gun has joined the group. The table is much nicer and the bags of marijuana are opened for viewing. The bills are nicely laid out for counting and the cellphones are arranged neatly in a row. The lighting is even. The arrangement of the money is interesting in both photos, arranged in groupings not related to the value of the bills. In both photos it is difficult to locate the seeds. Read Full Post ». We love stories like these because it proves that the spirit of free market entrepreneurship is alive and well. SkopelosNews posted last Monday an article about the cost of groceries in Greece being almost on par with the cost of groceries in Germany whose median income is twice that of Greece. Greek consumer groups were talking specifically about the possibility of cartel price manipulation in the cleaning products industry causing the cost of cleaning items to be unusually high. Enet reports that on Friday the owner of the Arvanitidis chain of supermarkets in Northern Greece was arrested for running a laundry detergent counterfeiting factory in Lakkoma outside of Thessaloniki. The owner and his cohorts were manufacturing something that they bottled and apparently sold to consumers under the brand names of Ariel, Neo-Mat, and Dixan. Most likely it was sold at the ridiculously high prices that people are forced to pay for laundry detergent in Europe. There is no word on how long that this operation has been going on. Anytime that a brand product is overpriced there is a chance that somebody is trying to find a way to make and sell a fake version or to come up with another strategy to cash in. Fuel and cigarettes are notable examples. Laundry detergent is something new — at least to us. It is a junkie thing\\\\\\\\\]. As control seems to be lack in Greece, and consumer groups stifled by a pro-money government, we suppose that you can never know that what you are buying is actually what you think you are buying. It is well known that bottled alcohol in bars is sometimes simply something else in a familiar bottle. What else is being faked and sold to us as the actual product? SkopelosNews presents this photo as an illustration only, not as an endorsement of any products shown. According to the president of consumer watchdog KEPKA , Nikos Tsemberlidis, a series of investigations have shown that the prices at supermarket chains and branches of multinationals are around 35 percent higher than in several European countries where the average wage is much higher than that in Greece. The comprehensive article to which we linked at the top of this page is very enlightening as findings of the consumer groups are presented more extensively. The freighter Evagelistria Skopelou conducted an interesting voyage over the weekend. Normally the ship carries cargo between Volos and the Northern Sporades on a regular schedule. The ship left Kos on Saturday afternoon and sailed overnight for Volos where she arrived at yesterday Sunday. On her return to Skopelos later this week? As the official home heating season draws to a close, it is time to point out how the taxation program of home heating oil was an utter failure. Newspapers report that people simply did not buy heating oil, conserved oil, or in many cases switched to wood furnaces to heat their homes. The Greek Fuel Suppliers Association estimates that the black hole in the state pockets is million euro due to the sharp decrease in heating oil sales. In addition there was a mild winter which also kept people for reaching for the thermostat. In the meantime all over Greece there were reports of extensive illegal logging of green trees. Vaxevanis discussed the Greek media and he questions its unwillingness to cover stories which might rankle the Greek political power structure. The video is available by clicking here. We learned today from Leonidas at the Elin petrol station just after Rigas House Hotel on the right hand side of the road to Stafylos what many others might already know. This rebate in effect for this heating season and the rebate is deposited automatically into your bank account. You have to personally interface with the website of the Ministry of Economy where you went in November to obtain the forms for the Road Tax. All you have to do is… well, it is not that easy. Leonidas said getting forms to pay the road tax was easy because you would give the government money. Taking money from the government is more difficult. We tried to guess a few numbers but none worked. Otherwise this tutorial will continue into the future. This is an important meeting to decide how the port will function for the next 30 years. Details are sketchy but among areas being worked on are the following. Strengthening or repair existing port projects. Construction of new port projects. Construction of buildings for the servicing of the port. Upgrading installations lighting, power, water, etc. Allocation of existing and new functions available in future infrastructure. Use of unused areas of the port to develop centers of attraction for visitors. Corresponding proposals to the ports Agnondas and Loutraki. It is unclear yet to SkopelosNews whether there exists today some kind of plan to be discussed or if the meeting will produce ideas and proposals from which a Master Plan will be drawn. We asked in the tax office and it was confirmed there today. The tax office in Skopelos is moving to Volos. As of Monday January 14 the tax office will be closed. Skopelosnews asked an employee if simple tasks like getting a tax number could still be done on Skopelos and the answer was that probably two employees from the tax office will remain and will perform tax-related work on Skopelos and will be the liaison for the Volos office. Where their office will be we do not know yet but we will keep you informed. Email Address:. Feeds: Posts Comments. If you were the Public Prosecutor, which photo would you rely on for conviction? How clean is your laundry really? It is a junkie thing\\\\\\\\\] As control seems to be lack in Greece, and consumer groups stifled by a pro-money government, we suppose that you can never know that what you are buying is actually what you think you are buying. We understand that this is not only a Greek problem. The enet article links to a Hellenic Police webpage with more photos. It is worth a look. Weekend junket? On Tuesday the tax office and the land registry offices in the country will be closed. Get your money back! Search skopelosnews Search for:.
