Rochdale Trading Standards investigated First Choice Holidays, one of the country's three main holiday suppliers, after a complaint was lodged by a Heywood family who had spent two weeks in Elenite Village Accommodation in Bulgaria in May Marian Corns, her son Andrew and his six-year-old daughter Gemma, agreed to stay at the Elenite Village Accommodation after the resort in which they were meant to spend their early season holiday became unavailable at short notice because it failed to comply with the holiday company's safety standards. Rochdale Magistrates' Court heard they were under the impression that 'there would be a full range of facilities available for the fortnight'. But on their return to the UK they complained about lack of facilities described to them in the brochure. On Tuesday First Choice pleaded guilty to describing a facility as having four restaurants when only two were available, describing the holiday resort as having tennis facilities when none were available and stating that there was mountain bike hire available when in fact it had no such facility. All of these offences are contrary to the package travel, package holidays and package tours regulations Keith Burley, solicitor for Rochdale Council, said: 'The three star holiday that they booked was no longer available. Options were given by the holidaymakers to withdraw or transfer to another holiday. He said the two restaurants in the resort were 'monotonous' for the family and there was 'a basic lack of choice'. Simon Jones for First Choice Holidays said they paid compensation for the 'disappointment felt by the family' last year. He admitted they had failed to give a reminder, in a letter to the family about their new destination, that there was a possibility not all facilities would be available at that time of year. But the original brochure had contained a statement to that effect. He said there was also a possibility their original destination would not have had all the facilities available. Mr Jones said 'there were only two restaurants available rather than four but the range of menus available from the four was available in the two.
