I have visited a peep show during the summer in NYC where naked women show customers their breasts and vagina. A woman offered me to touch her vagina for a fee. I paid the fee and fingered her vagina for about 3 minutes. My finger did not penetrate very deeply, only the tip of my fingers entered her vagina slightly, though it was quite wet. After leaving the place, I examined my fingers and discovered that near my nail areas, I had a dried blood spot (around 2mm in diameter) from ripping off the protruding skin from the area between my nails and my fingers several days back. The blood was already dry before I entered the place, but I am still worried about my risk towards HIV if the woman whom I fingered did have the virus. After reading statistics that suggest that 25% of NYC prostitutes have HIV, I was even more scared. Do you think I am at risk?
Thank you for your question. Fingering is considered safer sex as far as HIV is concerned. This is because it is unlikely that HIV would enter your bloodstream while engaging in this activity. You must have a FRESH open cut on your finger in order for HIV to have an access to your bloodstream. If you have an old cut (like the one you described in your question), this is no longer considered an open cut, as it was now healing over. So although I can't say you're at zero risk, I can say that your risk was low, and it was unlikely that you were infected with the HIV virus. However, if you want to get tested for peace of mind, remember to wait 6 months after your last possible exposure to the virus in order to get the most accurate test.
