The armed members will also be used to increase security in the area, which does not have a large armed Garda presence. Reliable sources have told The Irish Times that while it was impossible to be certain how big the full cocaine shipment was, the investigation has established that there were 62 bales dropped into Dunlough Bay, with 61 recovered to date. A team of Naval Service divers searched underwater caves in Dunlough Bay and a location around a life buoy for more drugs over the weekend. However, while wreckage was found from one of the sunken rigid inflatable boats ribs used to try to land the drugs, no further bales of cocaine were recovered. They have not ruled out the possibility that some of them have fled the Republic and may be already back in Britain, where the cocaine was to have been taken. Reliable sources said they believed at least one of the group travelled across the Atlantic on board the large vessel which delivered the drugs. They believe this man helped to unload the shipment into the water and that he reached the shore. The Lucky Day remained impounded in La Coruna last night. The two crew members, a year-old and a year-old with Lithuanian identity papers, are being held by Spanish police. The investigating team is also unclear about the route the vessel took to Ireland before dropping its cargo. The Lucky Day is known to have been in Trinidad in April but its movements since then have not yet been confirmed. Conor Lally. Dublin needs action, not another taskforce stating the obvious. Cocaine bale still missing in waters off west Cork

Naval Service fired shots twice as ship carrying drugs tried to flee. A smaller trawler, named the Castlemore, left Castletownbere in west Cork on Friday night, where it was purchased earlier that day. The Castlemore trawler, suspected to be used to receive deliveries of drugs from the much larger MV Matthew, ran aground on a sandbank off the coast of Blackwater, Co Wexford, on Sunday night. Two men, who are now in custody, were winched to safety from the ship by the Irish Coast Guard in the early hours of Monday morning. MV Matthew had experienced engine trouble off the coast of Wicklow over the weekend but was able to restore power. However, the captain of the ship, who is now in custody, suffered a blackout and sustained injuries and had to be evacuated off the vessel by an Irish Coast Guard helicopter at around 9pm on Monday. On Tuesday the large ship was heading to the Port of Cork to source turbochargers to repair its engines when it realised it was being pursued by authorities, who had been tracking the vessel. The ship was brought to Cork Harbour where searches identified a massive quantity of cocaine had been stored on board. The press conference has wrapped up now, but we will have a full report of the details from The Irish Times crime correspondent Conor Gallagher to follow later. The Castlemore, the smaller trawler that ran aground off Wexford on Sunday night, is still offshore, Mr Kelly said. Mr Kelly said he could not comment on reports that some quantities of cocaine may have been disposed of or destroyed before the vessel was seized by authorities. Commander Tony Geraghty, Fleet Operations Commander Irish Naval Service, has said the ship being tracked refused to follow directions and had attempted to evade capture by manoeuvring the vessel, after which warning shots were fired, prior to the Army Ranger Wing boarding the ship. We will bring you rolling updates as it kicks off. The successful operation has put a spotlight on the capabilities of the Naval Service, which have been dwindling in recent years and seen more and more ships tied up due to a lack of personnel to operate them. Mr Ryan said when he retired 11 years ago the Naval Service had 1, personnel and eight operational ships. He said although the Naval Service had eight vessels, it only had the crew to man two currently, due to a recruitment and retention crisis. The large vessel changed owners in the past six weeks or so before it set off from South America to Europe with its huge cargo of suspected cocaine. The ship had been headed for Belfast when it experienced engine trouble off the Wicklow coast over the weekend. The captain notified the Irish Coast Guard as the ship began to drift down the Irish Sea towards Co Wexford before they were able to restore power. The Garda and Defence Forces were tracking the vessel on suspicion it was carrying a significant quantity of cocaine and making deliveries of the drug to much smaller vessels at sea. The crew of the MV Matthew decided to head to the Port of Cork to source turbochargers to repair its engines before realising it was being pursued. The team of Army Rangers descended on to the deck of the bulk carrier from an Air Corps helicopter and secured the vessel. The ship was directed to Cork Harbour where it was detained on suspicion of drug trafficking. The size of the metre-long bulk carrier means it could take several days to thoroughly search the vessel, which sources believe was involved in the multiple drop-offs of large quantities of drugs in Europe. The Garda and Defence Forces were tracking the vessel on suspicion it was carrying cocaine and making deliveries of the drug to much smaller vessels at sea. One of those smaller vessels was the Castlemore fishing vessel, which ran aground on a sandbank about 12km off the coast of Blackwater, Co Wexford, late on Sunday night. They have since been arrested under anti-gangland legislation and were still in Garda custody in Co Wexford on Tuesday night. That vessel had changed owners in the past six weeks or so before it set off from South America to Europe, carrying a very large haul of drugs, believed to be cocaine. It appears that the ship was due to enter the separation zone for traffic sailing up and down the English channel, but it instead carried on towards Ireland and entered the Irish Sea with the intention of docking in Belfast when it experienced engine trouble over the weekend.
