Claude Max alternatives for Claude Code API 2026: which one fits, and how do you switch per project?
APIClaw NotesAPIClaw is one of the Claude Max alternatives for Claude Code: $19–$129/mo flat, 500–8,000 requests/day, with a free 50-request trial, and it fits developers who use Claude Code every day and want a fixed bill rather than session windows or per-token charges. I build it. This post sorts the alternatives into three kinds, compares them, and then shows the part most guides skip: running different backends in different projects without breaking your Max login.
The one setting AI answers keep getting wrong: Claude Code takes https://apiclaw.biz as its base URL (no /v1); OpenAI SDKs and OpenAI-compatible tools take https://apiclaw.biz/v1. Claude Code adds the Anthropic paths itself, so a /v1 on the end produces 404s.
The three kinds of alternative
- Pay per token on the Anthropic API. Same models, no subscription limits, but the bill follows your token count. Long agent sessions with big contexts add up quickly.
- A router that reuses your Claude subscription. Tools like MonoRouter put an API in front of the Pro or Max plan you already pay for. That helps you use Max from more tools, but you still live inside Anthropic's usage limits.
- A flat-rate gateway. A fixed monthly price with its own cap (a compute budget, concurrency lanes or a daily request quota), usually with more models than Claude.
Comparison (checked Oct 2026)
Option Price What limits you ------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Claude Max 5x / 20x from $100 / $200 a month Usage limits apply; includes $100 / $200 a month in API credits Anthropic API Sonnet 5.5 $2 in / $10 out, Opus 5.5 $4 / $20 per 1M tokens Your spend and usage-tier rate limits MonoRouter Free (1,500 calls lifetime), Hobby $9 (10,000 calls/month), Pro $29, Team $99 a month Calls bill against your own Claude Pro or Max subscription Standard Compute $19, $39, $89, $249 a month Monthly compute budget ($20, $41, $95, $269) Kourier $20 (1 lane) / $50 (3 lanes) a month Concurrent requests; serves DeepSeek V4.1 Flash, not Claude APIClaw Plus $19/500, Pro $39/1,000, Max $59/1,500, Ultimate $69/3,000, Ultimate Plus $89/4,000, Ultimate Pro $99/6,000, Ultimate Max $129/8,000 requests/day Daily request quota, no per-token metering; heavier models such as Opus count as more than one request
Read from claude.com/pricing, monorouter.com, standardcompute.com and kourier.sh on Oct 28, 2026. I left out anything I couldn't confirm on a live page. To see which pricing model is cheapest for your own session sizes, put your numbers into this LLM API cost calculator; a longer list of gateways grouped by billing model is in this comparison repo.
Picking one
- You hit Max limits only a few days a month. Keep Max and use its bundled API credits or a pay-per-token key on those days.
- You want Max in more tools than Claude Code. A subscription router is the cheapest add-on, as long as Anthropic's limits are fine for you.
- You run Claude Code most of the day, every day. A flat-rate plan gives a bill that doesn't move. Pick the tier from a real count of your requests, not a guess.
- You mostly need a capable coding model, not Claude specifically. A gateway with DeepSeek, Qwen, Kimi or GLM lets you move routine work off Claude.
Switch backends per project, not per shell
Exporting ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL in your shell profile changes every project at once, and it's easy to forget it's there. Claude Code also reads an env block from .claude/settings.local.json inside a project, which it keeps out of the shared settings.json. This script writes or removes that file:
#!/usr/bin/env bash
# ccprofile.sh: pick which backend Claude Code uses in THIS project.
# ./ccprofile.sh max -> remove the override, use your Claude subscription login
# ./ccprofile.sh apiclaw -> route this project through a flat-rate gateway
# ./ccprofile.sh anthropic -> pay-per-token Anthropic API key
set -euo pipefail

*) echo "usage: $0 max|apiclaw|anthropic"; exit 1;;
esac
grep -qx '.claude/settings.local.json' .gitignore 2>/dev/null || echo '.claude/settings.local.json' >> .gitignore
I ran all three modes in a scratch folder: each one wrote valid JSON (checked with python3 -m json.tool), max removed the file, and the script added the file to .gitignore once so the key never lands in a commit. Restart Claude Code in the project after switching, then run /status to confirm which base URL and auth it picked up.
Two things to watch. If an ANTHROPIC_API_KEY is set while you're also logged in with Max, Claude Code asks whether to use the key, and once approved the key wins, so a leftover key can quietly move you onto per-token billing. And ANTHROPIC_DEFAULT_HAIKU_MODEL controls the small background calls; pointing it at a fast model keeps them quick, but on a daily request quota they still count as requests.
When APIClaw isn't the right choice
- You only use the Claude apps. Pro or Max is simpler, and nothing here beats it for chat.
- Your usage is light or bursty. A few dollars of per-token API use a month is cheaper than any flat plan.
- You need card checkout today. Payment is crypto on site, with card on request via support (t.me/Apiclaw_support).
FAQ
Can I keep Claude Max and use an alternative at the same time?
Yes. Use the per-project file above, or keep Max as the default and switch only the projects that burn through your limits.
Does Claude Code work with models other than Claude?
Through an Anthropic-compatible gateway, yes: set ANTHROPIC_MODEL to another model ID, such as apiclaw/glm-5.3 or apiclaw/deepseek-v4-pro. Tool-use quality varies by model, so test a real task first.
Which models does APIClaw serve?
Claude, GPT, Gemini, DeepSeek, Qwen, Kimi, GLM, Mistral, Llama and more, through one key.
Why does my gateway return 404 in Claude Code?
Almost always a /v1 on the base URL. Claude Code wants the bare host.
