“Why would she pick a TED Talk on orgasms?”
“Of all the TED Talks to choose from, why this one?”
I think one of the greatest ways I learn is by being drawn in by the topic of conversation, and knowing that everyone in this class was going to write about a TED Talk, I knew that I needed to add a twist to the talk that I chose to write about.
Now, it was a very interesting talk. Mary Roach used a format that I could see myself using if I were to be teaching a class; she kept it interesting, simple, and had a flow through her presentation. She also had facts both supporting and not supporting cases of orgasms, giving room for discussion in her studies.
But, I don’t believe that this would be a video I would use in class unless it would benefit the topic of learning. (I could see it being used in a health class to explain the normalcy of orgasms or in a biology class explaining that the orgasm isn’t just a humans source of pleasure, but an automatic thing most animals do).
Humor is huge part of my everyday life, especially in the way that I communicate. Roach’s talk was constantly hilarious and brought light to such a taboo discussion. I believe that humor is also a way that I could communicate lessons not only in the classroom but at larger scales such as a TED Talk. I think keeping people interested in the topic and making them laugh helps them want to listen to more, and I think it’s important to have an element like that in the classroom.
I often felt bored in high school or uninterested because I felt like the teacher was speaking in a different language, and I think that is something that could be fixed with the type of speaking skills that Ms. Roach uses in her talk. I can remember someone telling me once that “if you can’t explain something to someone in a way they can understand it, you do now know it well enough yourself”, that has stuck with me for a long time and that persuades me to want to learn more about what I want to teach others and it also gives me a better understanding of how to relay knowledge to others.
This talk was great, and I would hope others take a look at it and learn as much from it as I did.
I am not going to lie. I did think, “Why would she chose this topic?” I was not brave enough to write a public blog post on a topic like this. I believe that is what drove me to read your blog. The topic was unique and I wanted to hear your thoughts. You did a wonderful job giving an insight on the video. After reading your post, I was interested in watching the video. Seventeen minutes later, I agree with your thoughts. Roach did a great job keeping the viewer intrigued by throwing random comical twists to such a sensitive topic. Thank you for going outside the norm and choosing a topic many would pass. Besides the description, I loved your change up of fonts and sizes.
I completely agree with your thoughts regarding using humor as a tool. I remember being a student and being bored with the method being used in almost all my classes. If you can make someone laugh while trying to get your point across, don’t you think your students would be more likely what you were trying to tell them?
Exactly! I’ve always been the type of student to learn through humor, so I think I would be the type of teacher to get my point across through humor! (Of course, in moderation)
Interesting! I have not watched the video yet, but I plan to. Even though it may be awkward, I think students need to be educated with things that are relevant to them, in appropriate measures, of course. I also feel that humor is needed to keep interest, and I would like to be fly on the wall in a classroom when using a video like this for a lesson. Oh the discussions that would be had!
It would be hilarious, right? We live in a world right now that wants to just avoid the topic with children when I think the more they know, the less trouble they’ll get in. Something to think about!
I think that is a great way to put it…unfortunately, kids are curious. At least of they know what is going on, they may be more cautious about what is going on.
Very funny, I like that we can be mature about it and feel comfortable enough to joke around and learn about orgasms. I thought it was awesome how she would drop some fact that i had no clue existed!
I think learning how to talk about uncomfortable things now will really help us later on. I’m sure kids will come up with some pretty uncomfortable topics!
