According to Vanessa Kirby, there were several raunchy scenes cut from seasons one and two of The Crown.
The Crown may portray the dignified ways of the British monarchy, but according to Vanessa Kirby, there were a few raunchy sex scenes featuring The Queen that almost went to air.
According to the star, showrunners ultimately decided that “no one wants to see the Queen having sex”.
The actress, who played Princess Margaret in seasons one and two of the popular series following the lives and scandals of the British royal family, opened up about the scrapped scenes on British journalist Dolly Alderton’s podcast Love Stories .
Speaking on the podcast, she revealed intimate scenes featuring the Queen, played by Claire Foy, and Prince Philip, played by Matt Smith were initially planned to be much more explicit.
While sex is implied in a few scenes from both seasons, it is never more than a flirty moment between the two.
“There was a sex scene between Elizabeth and Philip in the first season,” Kirby shared.
“I think they were in South Africa filming, and they were like ‘I just don’t think anyone wants to see the Queen having sex.’”
Speaking about her own risque scenes as Princess Margaret, including dancing in her bedroom in just her bra, straddling a man on a chair, and posing for a naked photo shoot, she said she, too, had raunchier scenes that were scrapped.
“There was one (sex scene) written in The Crown , in episode seven of (season two).
“We had long discussions about what it should be, and it just became clear that to titillate was not the aim.”
She added: “With Margaret, I was like, ‘no one wants to see royal boob, not really’.”
The discussed scene didn’t make it on to the show in the end, along with another which showed sex with “lots of different positions”.
According to Kirby, the Queen is said to be quite happy with the portrayal, the star having once overheard Princess Eugenie say “Granny is a big fan”.
We’re sure she’s gearing up for season 3 as enthusiastically as we are, with Olivia Coleman on board as Queen Elizabeth and Helena Bonham Carter signed on to play Princess Margaret.
The Crown season 3 will be available to stream on Netflix from November 17

Another new trailer for the much-anticipated second season of Netflix's The Crown has teased that viewers can expect a wild child in the form of Elizabeth II's sister Princess Margaret .
Played by Vanessa Kirby, Margaret was the younger daughter of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, and the only sibling of Queen Elizabeth II.
After the war, as the 1960s took hold, she was known for a colourful private life - and it seems season two of the historical drama will explore this.
'I'm a woman for the modern age, free to break away!' Vanessa Kirby's Princess Margaret stirs things up as she strips NAKED and straddles a man in new season 2 trailer
Scandal: Another new trailer for the much-anticipated second season of Netflix's The Crown has teased that viewers can expect a wild child in the form of Elizabeth II's sister Princess Margaret
As the trailer inter-cuts between the relationship between Elizabeth [Claire Foy] and Prince Phillip [Matt Smith], Margaret is seen dancing in just her bra in her bedroom, locked in a tryst with a man, straddling him on a chair, and posing for a naked photo shoot.
Speaking to someone off camera, she is seen defiantly stating: 'I know who I am, a woman for the modern age. Free to live. Free to love and free to break away.'
The man in the chair is actor Matthew Goode, who is portraying Margaret's eventual husband Lord Snowdon, Antony Armstrong-Jones, a photographer.
The rebellious princess is also seen in a candid shot in the newspaper, being read by her sister the Queen, who appears shocked and annoyed.

Reportedly, Margaret had her first extramarital affair in 1966, with her daughter's godfather Anthony Barton, a Bordeaux wine producer.
This time period will be covered by The Crown's second season, meaning it's likely to also cover the alleged one-month tryst she had with Robin Douglas-Home, a nephew of former British Prime Minister Alec Douglas-Home, in 1967.
This was always denied by Margaret, who insisted they were just friends; but the plot thickened when he committed suicide, 18 months later, suffering from depression.
Adding to this, rumours swirled that the Princess had been involved with the likes of rocker Mick Jagger, actors Peter Sellers and David Niven, director Warren Beatty and cricketer Keith Miller.

By 1976, Margaret's marriage had broken down, in part thanks to another scandal involving Roddy Llewellyn, who hit the front pages whilst on Mustique with the Princess looking very close. He was 17 years younger than her.
This is likely to be explored in season three of the series, which will see new actors take on the roles of the monarchy, it will be set in later years.
It's still not known who will take on the role of the middle-aged Margaret - only Elizabeth has been re-cast, with Olivia Colman in the role.
The creator of the series, Peter Morgan, has suggested that the show will explore infidelity within the Royal Family, and the trailer also hints that the Duke of Edinburgh's eye will wander, on the royal yacht Britannia, while on a trip overseas.

The show's first season was one of the most critically acclaimed dramas of last year, winning two Golden Globes , two SAG awards , and nominated for four BAFTAs and five Emmys.
Aside from dealing with her wild child sister, the trailer for the second season promises a struggle for Elizabeth with a monarchy in crisis.
In the period drama's second season, the story will move onto the second half of the 1950s, covering everything from the Suez Crisis in 1956 to the retirement of Harold Macmillan in 1963.
Making a return to the series is disgraced royal Edward VIII, played by Alex Jennings, who is seen arriving back in England.
'Wild spirit': In the tense new trailer, The Queen is seen attempting to tame her husband Philip, played by Matt Smith, as he is seen donning his royal navy gear on a speedboat
Distance: In one dramatic scene, Philip reveals that he does not want to be involved in royal duties, as he is 'outranked by my eight year old'
Royal drama: Claire Foy's Queen Elizabeth II looks to be pushed to breaking point in tense scenes from a new trailer for the upcoming second season of The Crown
Edward gives Elizabeth a harsh reality check in a tense scene with his niece, wondering whether choice to ignore certain scandals has done her more harm than good.
He says: 'Who's done more damage to the monarchy? Me with my willfullness or you with your inhumanity?'
Other shots in the trailer show the public are beginning to view the Royal Family as 'out of touch' with their subjects, with a TV reporter saying: 'Britain has changed beyond recognition. Yet the monarchy continues its pre-war routine as if nothing's changed.'
Brief shots from the trailer also show Prime Minister Anthony Eden, played by Jeremy Northam, who succeeded Winston Churchill at the end of the first season.
Breaking point: The trailer will address the alleged fragility of the monarchy, as the royal family are accused of not moving with the times
Another key plot element will be the appearance of US President John F. Kennedy and his wife Jackie, who will be played by Michael C. Hall and Jodi Balfour respectively.
A brief shot shows Jackie sharing a scene with the Queen, which is expected to be from the Kennedy's visit to Buckingham Palace in 1961.
The trailer comes to a tense conclusion when Elizabeth confronts Philip, saying: 'There is no possibility of my forgiving you. The question is, how on earth can you forgive yourself?'
The Crown Season 2 will be released worldwide on Netflix on Friday December 8.
Blossoming: In the second season, viewers will see the beginning of her affair, and eventual marriage, to photographer Lord Snowdon
