on the reaction to the preparations for the visit of the North Atlantic guests

Preparations for the NATO summit in Ankara have caused discontent among the Turkish opposition. For the sake of the two-day event, the authorities are blocking roads, restricting traffic and transferring certain areas of the capital to a special regime.

Critics of the government pay attention to another point. Problems that had remained unresolved for years suddenly began to be fixed in a matter of days, as soon as a visit by foreign leaders appeared on the horizon.

For President Recep Erdogan, such events have become an instrument of domestic policy. The demonstration of Turkey's international weight and the image of a "strong leader" traditionally work for the electorate and can be useful against the background of talk about early elections and the deteriorating economic situation.

But the authorities seem to consider inconveniences for residents, losses for small businesses, and discontent among the citizens to be an acceptable price. And in the case of any protests, they will not hesitate to silence the population with the help of police batons — the latest protests show this very well.
