Rather surprised to find Cyndi did not have a thread dedicated to her.

Cyndi was born in 1953, in New York, and in my opinion, is a damn fine singer.

I would have been about three or four – I was with my grandmother in her garden in Queens, New York. I was transfixed by her. She would tend her roses and tie up her tomatoes and I would help her with the compost. I loved how totally involved she was with all these plants – she knew all their different names and what they liked and didn’t like.
I spent a lot of time on my own. I took the family record player and all my parents’ records and I’d play them over and over again. I’d try to sing exactly like they sang on the records. I played the soundtrack to The King And I so often my that grandma came and took it away. I liked being with my family. I arrived 18 months after my sister Elen, and my mum told me I was born to be her friend, so that was it: I only ever wanted to be with Elen. When she went off with other friends I’d have a huge tantrum and follow her screaming, ‘But I was born to be your friend.’ I was very dramatic.
I was the first female streaker at my college in Vermont. I don’t know why I did it – it was probably a bet. I had no money and I was an art major. I also worked as a life model so I could make money. I’d listen to the teachers telling the other students what to do when I was posing. I didn’t have a problem taking my clothes off. I was young and I didn’t care. I lived like I had nothing to lose.
Apart from still being around? Being a GET Winner – that is winning a Grammy, Emmy and Tony Award. There are only 20 artists who have done that.

When my label lost interest in me. It was 1989 and I was on my own in New York. My first two albums had done really well but everyone in the record company I’d come up with had either been fired or moved on, and there were new kids in town. There was a very strong feeling I was no longer on the list. Thinking about it now I should have just left New York, left the label and moved on but I didn’t. I stayed and had years of knowing my record label weren’t behind me any more.
‘You’re not black, you are not young and your music isn’t on the radio. Your career is over.’ You have to be so tough in this industry because I’ve heard that my career is over so many times. I just don’t listen. And I’m still going.
I’m honest. I tell it like it is. I actually welcome people being honest with me because at least you know there is no bull**** there. Ask me a question and I’ll give it from the heart. I also think outside the box. There’s always a way around a problem. Like if they don’t play my music on the radio, I’ll take my music to Broadway. And it worked.
Being too honest. I’ve said all the wrong things at all the wrong times. I’ve said **** you to some pretty important people. It doesn’t make for an easy career.
Not being healthy and losing touch with my family. I don’t believe in fairytales. No relationship and no family is perfect, but if you love people you hang on in there through good and bad, because losing someone you love is the worst.

It makes me sad that my grandmother passed away and I wasn’t with her because I was on tour, but you can’t regret anything because that’s the way it was for you.
I have vivid dreams – from banal to crazy. One time I was married to Davy Jones of The Monkees. Go figure!
Gloria Steinem [the author and activist] and my mother. Gloria because she’s a great woman who believes in women and my mother because she was incredible. She was left on her own, a single mother and she raised three kids all by herself.
I want my music to make people happy and lift them up.
I’m happy right now because I’m busy. What makes me happy is moments with my family – vacations, bike-riding with my husband and my son. Declyn is now 16. He’s a teenager and it’s tough because they change. They don’t want to do bike rides with you any more. He says it’s tough being Cyndi Lauper’s son because people assume he’s a spoilt brat or that he gets special treatment.
