Headed by Greg Gonzales, Brooklyn ambient pop group Cigarettes After Sex has reignited a steady stream of traction in previous months, releasing the single “ K ” to the widespread adoration of longtime fans, embarking on a massive Europe and US tour and with this new single, possibly heralding the start of their much anticipated debut album.
With Gonzales’ lovelorn lyrics (delivered in a hushed, demure but haunting fashion) and a masterful application of simple and dreamy instrumentation, their music evokes an endearing form of forgiveness and intimacy, garnering an immediate connection with fans that some bands would die for and a resulting set of shows at the likes of Primavera and Sasquatch! – establishing themselves as much more than a YouTube cult favorite.
This new track titled “Apocalypse” builds upon this winning formula, painting cityscapes of crumbling bridges, rushing helicopters and rising floods against picturesque descriptions of a personal and quiet struggle – of a lover holding on to the past. Add that to a collection of drum brushed snare hits, a bumbling guitar riff, despondent bass guitar notes and the result is a tad more bittersweet, and if we’re comparing by their standards, an unusually happier and less mellow, Cigarettes After Sex track.
