The short version: Here’s an amazing Chuck Berry show, from a guy who isn’t known for his amazing shows.
The long version: One night in college I was listening to KMET and they announced that Chuck Berry’s set from Wolf & Rissmiller’s Country Club was going to be broadcast live from the stage in a few minutes. Chuck had the reputation of being the stingiest and lackluster performers in rock at that point. As a collector of live tapes I wanted to record it, but knowing it would likely be disappointing I put in a cheap Radio Shack-brand cassette and continued reading.
The show began and Chuck was flying out of the gate (and had the great Johnny Rivers on second guitar, tearing it up). As the show went on I started to perk up as every single song was just smoking, be it an insane mashup of Carol/Little Queenie or an amazing version of Bio.
By the time he got to Johnnie B. Goode the place was blowing up. Chuck invited his young (!) fans onstage, telling them to “Sing it like your parents did!” Bouncers tried to remove the stage-crashers and Chuck warned them to stop by yelling “Don’t hurt my children!” Then he did the final number, a 12-minute version of Reelin’ and Rockin’ and it was just pandemonium. Fans onstage screamed “Chuck!” into the microphones as he left the stage. And, apparently, the building.
The two KMET DJs hosting the broadcast were stunned, exclaiming that it was the best live broadcast ever and waited for the encore. But it’s Chuck, so he’s still stingy. He left the radio station hanging for an encore that never came. Because he’s Chuck effin’ Berry.
Postscript: Six months later Chuck returned to the Country Club. I knew the odds of lightning striking twice was unlikely, but I couldn’t risk it. I got tickets. Lightning did strike twice. No Johnny Rivers, but Chuck made up for it with another identical show – off the charts, fans onstage at the end, no encore.
I transferred my crappy Radio Shack tape to digital in the ‘90s and it sounded better than I remembered (but what would it sound like if I’d used a decent TDK tape?). Then I misplaced it for nearly two decades before finally coming across it in the past year. Here’s the show, not perfect (my tape-flip cut off part of Reelin’ and Rockin’) but it good listen anyway. Fire it up and hear Chuck proving why HE is the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll.
PS: This is in Chuck’s estate’s archives, as it was recorded for national syndication. Four songs were later sent to radio stations, but this is the only version I’ve ever heard of the complete broadcast. And I’ve looked.
Setlist: Maybelline, Memphis Tenn, School Days, Roll Over Beethoven, Sweet Little Sixteen, Carol/Little Queenie, unknown blues ballad, Bio, Nadine, Johnnie B. Goode, Reelin’ & Rockin’, and finally Disappointed DJs.
