Leggings are tight, skinny and show everything, so there’s no way a plus size 40+ gal could ever wear them, right?….
…..NOT! Leggings are a great casual look for mature women, whether you are regular or full-figured. It’s all in the way you wear them. Here are some pointers to get you past your mental block.
If you want to look fabulous in leggings, go the elegant route. High-quality plus size leggings are the key. There are many different types including activewear (yoga) leggings, thicker Ponte leggings, faux leather leggings, jeggings (denim leggings), velvet leggings..the list goes on.
Whichever ones you choose, make sure they are decently opaque, well made, slim-fitting, and that they stretch, but not too much! They need to hold you in, smooth out any lumps and bumps without losing their shape. A high, wide waistband also helps immensely to give you a sleek, sexy look.
You’ve probably heard this a million times and here are my thoughts. The best tops to wear with leggings are tops that covers your bottom and yes, your crotch! That sounds kind of crass, but it is the truth!
Keep your private parts private because leggings tend to show everything. The exception might be if you are wearing a really thick Ponte legging, (more like pants), but even then, a longer top worn with leggings is a more flattering silhouette.
The idea length of top to wear with your plus size leggings hits anywhere from just below the groin (and your bottom at the back) to a few inches above the knee. The exact spot is going to differ based on your proportions and the style of the top. The sweater above is a good length if you want to downplay your thighs.
If you are short, keep your top on the shorter side because if the top is too long it will drown you and make your legs look even shorter.
Tops for leggings could include a long sweater, tunic shirt, vest. High low tops- shorter in the front and longer in the back are very popular. There are so many choices!
In winter, black, charcoal gray, dark brown or navy leggings are lovely. The shades make a great backdrop for a pretty top and the darker colors slim your bottom half. 
In summer, you can wear still wear black leggings but they can look and feel hot. In this case, try white jeggings which are more popular than white leggings because they are more opaque but not heavy.
To look really tall and slim in leggings try a monochromatic look such as all black or all navy but be sure vary the textures to keep your head to toe solid color outfit from looking boring. For example, you could wear a black velvet top with black Ponte leggings. See above (left).
Like to dress more colorfully? Wear a light or bright top with dark leggings to draw attention up to your pretty face.
To create an elegant leggings look, you need the right footwear.
There are so many shoes that look great with leggings including ballet flats, smoking slippers, slides, mules, flat or low sandals, sneakers, booties etc.
The main thing to remember is to avoid heavy, clunky shoes which will make you look frumpy. Also stay away from sky-high skinny stilletos, unless you want to look like a 19-year-old on her way to a nightclub.
A shoe that exposes your foot like a low-medium strappy sandal, or a cute ballet flat is very flattering because it reveals more skin on the top of the foot, which makes your legs appear longer.
On the other hand, statement sneakers ( slip on or lace up) can look super cute if you are after a sporty look. Just don’t wear heavy, clunky track shoes.
One final note – You have to want to wear leggings to look good in them, so if they are not on your radar, don’t even go there. Leggings are not for everyone.

I’m 47 and a size 12-14 “pear.” They are the most affordable option vs. looking for tailored-fit pants (often COSTING MORE because the industry doesn’t care about curvy women wanting modern trendy style just as much as everybody else has it made available). I LOVE the outfits paired with the v-neck, trapeze hem tunic sweaters, or the one with the oversized denim shirt. I’ll never go near the legging style is the “faux leather look.” There’s just something *too* edgy about them (like they’d give you a reputation you don’t want, haha!)—excellent blog and advice.

Hi Dawn, I’d try searching women’s tunics or long tops for leggings or women’s long shirts. That should give you a good result.
I have found LuLaRoe, I love their leggings. They are not see through, they don’t show lumps and bumps, and they are one of a kind. My daughter loves hers too. I have to say I felt really confident in mine. Deborah really nails it when she talks about the quality, the stretch and be able to smooth out any lumps and bumps. We don’t want footless stalkings. I say try on, shop around and be PICKY!!
I am a big fan of LuLaRoe. The material used in the leggings are quite superior in quality. They are thick and smooth. I think that makes all the difference.
I love the legging looks, and while I’m not plus size, I have fat, cellulite – dimpled thighs. I have tried on many pairs of leggings and have found none so far that disguise or “hold in” the dimples. I recently heard about Lisette pants which are made in Canada but are sold at a retailer nearby (apparently an Oprah favorite) but haven’t tried them on yet. They’re also over $100 which is out of my price range, but if they hide the dimples I might splurge and buy a pair. Have you ever heard of them?

I have 8 pairs of “Women in Control” leggings offered on QVC; they are fabulous!!!!! The 14% spandex hides EVERYTHING! The best thing …. they’re under $30!!
Lisette pants are great.. They’ve more polished looking and wear well (no dryer, but machine wash ok). Worth the price.
I like the look of outfit #5 but I am having a hard time finding the right outwear. Looking for something a bit long in the back, loose and no wool.
