Do you remember the 2019 South Korean blockbuster Parasite that took home four Oscars early this year? I bet you do. Even if you have never watched the film, you will most likely hear of it and its incredible achievements in the biggest international film festivals of all times like the Oscars, the Academy Award or even Cannes Film Festival.
The smashing hit was so intriguing for audiences all around the world because of its willingness to break boundaries in terms of film genre as well as its capability to resonate with its audiences. The black comedy’s interesting twist and unique flavour in depicting the depressing issue of class classification and wealth gap tell the story of how family members from a poor family (the Kim family) conned their way into working for a rich family (the Park clan) and soon taking advantage of the Park’s lavish lifestyle.
In the genre-bender, there were definitely many interesting characters worth delving into due to the complexities behind the plot’s theme and the message the director is trying to convey. There was a particular character however that appealed to my eye– the mistress of the Park household, Choi Yeongyo . The character, portrayed by the actress Cho Yeojeong, is the fusion of everyday elegance and a seemingly lackadaisical and flighty personality. Although Cho was known by the international community through her superb performance in the Parasite , the actress is recognised by the Korean audience as one that is dynamic and ready to take on any challenges.
Although we were captivated by Cho’s portrayal of a spendthrift materialistic household mistress, she started her career in the entertainment industry as a modest girl. Before thriving on acting vigorously, she was the host for the longest-running children’s programme Popopo in South Korea, dating back to 1981. The programme was so popular that the majority of the hosts for the programme, also known as the ‘Pomi Sisters’ managed to build rather impressive careers after they departed from the programme due to their previous exposure. Looking at the long list of Pomi Sisters, we can see famous household names for the Korean public like Wang Yeongeun , singer Kim Hyeyoung , actor Lee Euijung and announcer Na Gyeongeun (who is also commonly referred to as the Nation’s MC, Yoo Jaesuk ’s wife).
Cho, who joined the programme at the age of 17 in 1997 was the youngest Pomi Sister in Popopo’s history. Her experience as a model for a fashion magazine has allowed her to gain the skills needed to create a lovely and vibrant atmosphere while taking photoshoots, thus landing herself a spot in the programme. She first gained attention in Popopo for her bubbly personality and her sophisticated facial features. It was reported that the natural beauty was often mistaken as biracial for she possesses big eyes and prominent nose at a young age.
The actress set the ball rolling for her acting career through the 1999 sitcom How Am I? and was soon observed to be filming passionately for a series of drama that includes Last War and Roll of Thunder (2000), The Rustic Period (2002), South of the Sun (2003), War of Money: The Original (2008), the well-received I Need Romance (2011) and many more. However, what really moved her up the ranks in the filming industry and distinguished her from other actresses was her willingness to attempt challenging roles. This is evident by Cho’s endeavour to film contents that many other actresses are reluctant to take.
To be specific, the actress has been participating in the filming of pictures that have scenes of nudity or in sex comedies. Her first R-rated film was Bangjajeon, also known as The Servant in English, which is a remake based on Korea’s famous folktale The Story of Chunhyang , in which she plays the role of Lady Chunhyang, the daughter of a gisaeng (courtesans of lower social ranks that provide entertainment to upper-classmen during the Joseon dynasty). She continued to make her appearance in other movies such as The Concubine (2012) and Casa Amor: Exclusive for Ladies (2015), resulting in her following attachment to labels like “nudity” or “sex scenes”.
When she first ventured into the filming of films with explicit scenes, the Korean community was rather astonished by the actress’ decision because they were accustomed to her pure and innocent image on-screen. In response to audiences’ comment that she has been “going nude too often”, Cho ignored all concerns and doubts expressed by the public and instead urged the audience to focus on the film and the underlying theme instead. The actress rocks her role as a genuine actress for her fearless attitude and in the way she treats her work.
Thanks to her passion for work, Cho Yeojeong welcomed the turning point in her career with her Parasite role that proves to the international audience that she is a credible actress. The actress was dubbed “The Goddess of Cannes” by the Korean press for her breathtaking presence in the Cannes Film Festival in an elegant and sleek black dress. Upon returning to her home country after attending the film festivals and award ceremonies, Cho was once again back to work, showcasing her solid acting skills in the drama Woman of 9.9. What does the actress do then, whenever she takes a rest from her busy schedule? Well, the actress does not really “take a break”. During her free time, Cho keeps herself busy through exercising, travelling and attending dance performances to gain more exposure and insights whenever possible. The secret of her success is definitely hard work.
Although Cho Yeojeong has an incredible background in acting, the actress is very secretive when it comes to her love life. Although it is said that the actress has been dating, the low-profile actress’ relationship has never been public. Apparently, a lot of celebrities in Korea tend to keep their love life undisclosed because it will be very burdensome for them to sustain their relationship if news of them dating leaks. Nevertheless, Cho who is young at heart is often spotted meeting friends she had known for quite a while to rejuvenate herself.
It is inevitable for both men and women to start considering having a relationship that grants them the one-way ticket to a happy marriage when they arrive in their 30s, especially for those who have already established a steady career. Cho , on the other hand, holds a different opinion. The actress, who celebrated her 39th birthday early this year still has no thoughts on marriage for she has a successful career and is content with her single and free lifestyle. The actress with multiple charms has decided to take it slow when it comes to finding her Mr Right. Although Cho’s parents, just like any other parents in the world, are curious about their daughter’s love life, the two were supportive of Cho’s decision to not make a hasty decision when it comes to tying the knot.
Although a lot has changed since Cho Yeojeong’s endeavour in the entertainment industry, from being a doll-like girl next door to a trustworthy and sexy diva that excels in her field, one thing has never changed for sure– the actress’ tenacity and passion for acting.
