Chloe Grace Moretz and Luca Guadagnino attend “Suspiria” film premiere
[Editor’s note: The following article contains minor spoilers for “ Suspiria .”]
Luca Guadagnino is earning heaps of praise for his “Suspiria” remake, an ambitious reinvention of Dario Argento’s 1977 horror classic. Set at a highly competitive girls’ dance school in Cold War Berlin, the film touches on themes of inherited trauma, hysterical women, and Germany’s postwar shame — all bathed in blood and witchcraft. An unlikely candidate to pass the infamous Bechdel test, which measures gender parity onscreen, “Suspiria” actually features only two male actors, each with a single line apiece. (There is an old man, but he’s played by Tilda Swinton). It’s a slam dunk for women onscreen, though it does put them through a meat-hook-shaped ringer.
Chloë Grace Moretz plays Patricia in the film, a dancer who goes missing from the school and provides the first mention of witchcraft in the movie’s opening scene. At an event during the Provincetown Film Festival in June, Moretz had many nice things to say about Guadagnino. Though she was tight-lipped on details at the time, she did say “there’s a good bit of nudity in the movie,” referring to an epic final scene featuring all the actresses in a blood-spattering resurrection ritual.
“What really hit me was that it’s not voyeuristic in the slightest bit,” Moretz said. “It is one of the most empowering, in terms of femininity, it’s a very interesting depiction of physical femininity and womanhood, and that plays a role in the Wicca of it all, and how that’s used in ritual.”
At only 21 years old, Moretz has been in Hollywood for over a decade, having started her career as a child actress in “The Amityville Horror.” Earlier in the conversation, she revealed her disappointment in “Kick-Ass 2,” a sequel to her hit action comedy, which upset many fans and critics by forcing a romance between the two teenaged main characters, including the one played by Moretz.
It was clear in her voice that even at 21, she is already fatigued by Hollywood’s view of women and girls, but she lit up when talking about Guadagnino.
“A lot of people wouldn’t expect a grown man to be able to depict women in that way,” she said. “What’s so special about Luca is that he doesn’t see gender. He sees a person. And he wants to depict what is special about that person, be it male or female, as adequately onscreen as he can. He’s really special though, he’s one of the most authentic, pure souls.”
Moretz has worked with A-list directors such as Martin Scorsese, Tim Burton, Olivier Assayas, and Kimberly Peirce, but Guadagnino’s inventive directing style made quite the impression. She called the film “the closest thing to modern Stanley Kubrick I’ve seen,” and praised Guadagnino for always pushing actors to “go further.”
“He really will let you do whatever you want. And it’s completely unconventional. There’s no typical set-ups, there’s no medium, wide, close,” she said. “You’ll have a camera up there in the corner, you’ll have a camera below, you’ll have a camera on your fingers, you won’t know what’s happening but you’re just going on this crazy whirlwind 20-hour day. It’s wild.”
Amazon Studios released “Suspiria” in New York and L.A. on October 26, where it led specialty box office charts. It expands to more 250 theaters on Friday, November 2.

“she is already fatigued by Hollywood’s view of women and girls”…and then Moretz goes on to praise the nudity (which wasn’t needed). Funny how women are very selective about what is empowering (when it suits them) and what isn’t. In the end, guess what? It’s still nudity.
As for the movie, once again, why do a remake of a classic? And oddly, Chloe has been in a remake of Carrie, Let the Right One in, Suspiria…all three original movies classics which were VASTLY superior.
I’ve seen so many actresses defend gratuitous/exploitive nudity just because it’s in a good project.
How do I get a job synthesizing the rationalizations for nudity on screen? (Not opposed, btw.)
Agreed about The Killing of a Sacred Deer. That film deserves more praise than it got. Ridiculously well made. Still very much looking forward to seeing this new Suspiria.

Someone should see The Killing of a Sacred Deer. And before anyone says anything, I actually have seen the new Suspiria. I can see the Kubrick vibes she got in it, but Sacred Deer is like Eyes Wide Shut’s spiritual sequel.
The reviews are actually very mixed.
The film is as divisive as “mother!”

You hear that? ? That’s the sound of Kim Kardashian crafting a fire tweet.
On Wednesday, Chloë Grace Moretz shared a topless photo of herself on social media, months after she publicly took Kardashian to task for posting a nude selfie .
“@KimKardashian I truly hope you realize how important setting goals are for young women, teaching them we have so much more to offer than... our bodies,” she tweeted in March.
Moretz later defended her comments, explaining that she was in no way “slut-shaming” Kardashian , but instead commenting on the ways she uses her celebrity platform.
The photo in question is a black-and-white snap of Moretz at the beach, in which she poses topless with her back to the camera. It is, of course, way less explicit than Kardashian’s, but seems a tad hypocritical in retrospect.
In the caption, she credited the photo to her famous boyfriend, Brooklyn Beckham, and wrote “Laguna.”

Beckham also shared a snap from the beach day, featuring a fully-clothed Moretz in a bikini and overshirt standing oceanside.

Social media users were quick to burst Moretz’s bubble, expressing their disappointment on her shifting principles.
“Funny how you were blaming KK for the same kind of pic months ago,” one follower wrote with another commenting, “ermm I thought you were against nude selfies?”
After her spat with Kardashian, Moretz tried to differentiate some of her more risqué photo shoots , like the now infamous Nylon cover, from the ones she critiques on social media.
“ On social media, like on Instagram and stuff that I post, and the way that I view myself, and portray myself on there, that’s definitely a much more personalized take,” she explained to Elle. “I’m not collaborating with people to make that, it’s my own social media platform in which I’m — it’s not a character, it’s just me.”
We’ll just be here patiently waiting for Kardashian’s clap back ...

PDA is TMI for Chloë Grace Moretz ! Just a month after the 21-year-old actress posted a loving Instagram tribute to on-again, off-again boyfriend Brooklyn Beckham , he was photographed kissing model Lexi Woods . And in a new interview, Moretz seems to throw shade at her 19-year-old ex over that kiss.
From what Moretz told The Sunday Times in an interview published on Sunday, August 12, it seems she found out about Beckham’s makeout session with the 20-year-old model through Twitter.
“Breakups are hard across the board,” she said. “But when every verified account on Twitter posts something about me, I get tagged. And every major publication is verified. So anytime they post something about a certain relationship, it pops up on my phone, which is how I find out about 90 percent of things.”
She continued: “I’m not a big fan of PDAs in general. I personally don’t want to see people posted all over my phone making out.”
Moretz and Beckham initially broke up in August 2016 but rekindled their romance in November 2017. “I think we chose each other ,” the Suspiria actress told Us Weekly at the time. “It’s been years now off and on and it’s just one of those things, you come back and it’s like no time spent away from each other at all. I think that’s the most important thing and your lives are an open book. We like to have our own little private world, and I think that’s important for both of us.”
Then, however, Beckham and Wood’s steamy kiss in April revealed he and Moretz had split again. Since then, the What I See author has dated musician Lexy Panterra and model Alex Lee Aillón .
