Adelaide schoolchildren were invited to design a Minecraft national park that could be built in real life.

Students aged nine to 12 were asked to create designs in the blocky 3-D world.

The results could then go into upgrades to existing national parks in Adelaide.

The government has committed nearly $10.4m Australian dollar (PS5.4m), towards the redesigns.

It was keen to find a different way to involve young people in its work processes.

"This competition is part in a community involvement project asking people of all age what kind of facilities would encourage their spending more time at national parks," reads Natural Resources, Adelaide's website, which announced the winner.

"The State government has allocated $10.4m for parks projects. So some of the ideas your class generates might end up being used."

It added that the only rule is that any design must be possible to be realized in the real world.

"The park features must complement the natural environment, taking into consideration the animals and plants that live there."

It suggested that ideas could include trails for bushwalking or mountain biking, horse riding, barbecue and picnic areas, or something completely new."

Redesigning slums

It is becoming more popular to create Minecraft projects that are more ambitious.

As part of an educational project, the Danish government has mapped the entire country.

Mojang (the creators of Minecraft) teamed up in 2012 with the UN to help design city spaces for developing countries.

They created public spaces in the game, then shared it with community organizations, where they could be redesigned.

The project has generated new ideas for greenspace in Kiberia. It is also used to design Les Cayes' third largest city, Haiti.

The Adelaide competition closes 12 June, and the winner will be announced one month later.

Winners will receive a government-funded trip for two to Belair National Park.
