Behind even the most innocent-seeming YouTube trends can lurk predators intent on exploiting young kids.
Vocativ reports on YouTube “Feet Dares,” a creepy trend of men, sometimes disguised as fellow tweens, asking tween vloggers to show their soles, suck on their toes, or open a banana with their feet .
But now the kids are fighting back.
“Feet dares” for both male and female tweens have become so pervasive that many make videos specifically to address how they won’t do feet dares. The requests come in innocently enough as suggestions for videos that will give the kids more subscribers and views.
“ The dare exchanges—a sort of play-date for the digital age—are common among kids who find themselves bored after school. But in reality, many of the tweens engaging in challenges aren’t tweens at all; they’re ‘pervs’…on the hunt for a certain kind of child porn,” writes Vocativ.
A channel called YouTube Video Alert made an entire video warning underage vloggers that those asking to see their feet aren’t doing it as an innocent dare, but because of sexual intent.
The challenges seem weird but harmless to the kids, and many in the videos expressed that they didn’t know why someone was inundating their inbox with requests for “foot dares.” One says she won’t show the soles of her feet, but she does demonstrate her flexibility by putting her legs behind her head.
As Vocativ puts it, “a mature eye reveals the stunts are far dirtier than the girls believe.” But some tweens do realize that the requests are coming from “foot fetish people,” as evidenced in the video compilation of complaints below. Some of the kids ID the YouTube usernames of the people who solicit them, then warn other tween vloggers not to answer those messages.
Vocativ reports that YouTube is trying to crack down on “content related to kids and sex” (reluctant to use the term “child porn”) and has cleared out 100,000 queries involving inappropriate videos of children. “Foot Dare” videos specifically are hard to find because many have innocuous titles like “Dares!” or “Dares and Challenges!”
Blocking creeps and pedophiles has been an ongoing battle for YouTube, because offenders often don’t post their own videos or leave the other evidence necessary to file reports against them. If their accounts are eventually taken down by YouTube, they can easily start new ones.

A former Newport Beach recreation coordinator would suck boys’ toes
even when other “kids” or “grown-ups” were around, several children
said Monday as they took the stand in the trial of the man accused of
using boys for sexual gratification.
Trenton Veches, dressed in a dark gray suit, seemed to listen
intently to the boys’ statements as each of them described how he
sucked their toes or made them pose for digital pictures he allegedly
took and filed away in his home computer.

On Monday, the second day of the trial, the prosecution brought
about 10 boys to the witness stand, seemingly aiming to establish a
consistent pattern of behavior on Veches’ part -- that he had a foot
fetish and was specifically obsessed with young boys’ feet.
The boys who testified on Monday were between 7 and 12 years old
and each about a year younger at the time of the alleged crimes.
One 8-year-old boy said “everyone” at the city’s after-school
program he went to saw Veches sucking his toes.
“The grown-ups were there,” he told defense attorney John Dolan,
who was cross-examining him. “They saw it. Everyone saw it.”
The boy said he told his father about the toe-sucking.
“My father said it was a bad thing to do,” he said. “So the next
time he did it, I told him to stop doing that. I told him it was a
bad thing to do. And then [Veches] said ‘OK.’”
Another 8-year-old boy said Veches made him pose for pictures.
“It’s kinda confusing,” he told prosecutor Sheila Hanson. “He’d
suck on my toes for some reason. I didn’t think it was cruel. But it

Luke Griffin, 20, was sent to prison for six years after admitting 13 counts of sexual assault of children under 13 and one of false imprisonment
A gymnastics coach has been jailed for secretly abusing young children to satisfy his bizarre foot fetish.
Luke Griffin, 20, groomed eight young victims over more than two years - by licking and tickling their feet for sex kicks.
A court heard Griffin filmed himself on his mobile phone as he carried out his foot fantasy on the youngsters.
Griffin targeted seven girls and one boy aged between seven and ten at a community gym where he gave lessons in acrobatics and fitness.
His defence counsel Andrew Taylor said: "He has had a foot fetish since he was younger and has had sexual fantasies.
"Griffin said he's been stupid and abused his position of trust. He got sexual gratification from it."
Griffin, of Cardiff, South Wales, assaulted most of his victims as he gave them lifts to and from the gym.
Cardiff Crown Court heard in some cases Griffin tied little girls' ankles before tickling them with a hair brush and licking their feet.
He bit another little girl on the foot and also tied up one terrified girl and shut her in the boot of his car for a few minutes.
A girl told how Griffin sexually abused her by tickling and licking her feet for his sexual gratification - and she later used coloured pencils to sketch what had happened in his car.
Prosecutor Caroline Rees said: "He abused the trust of parents who had a high degree of trust in him and showed him esteem.
"They are devastated at his abuse of their trust. He would arrange lifts to and from the club.
"He was doing that for the purpose of gaining access to the children away from their parents.
The court heard he targeted his "favourites" from the gym which cannot be named to protect the children.
After Griffin imprisoned a girl in the boot of his car he threatened her not to tell anyone otherwise he would "get her mum in the night".
He used force to restrain another victim and told her it was their secret and bribed another girl with 50p and £1 not to say anything.
Mrs Rees added: "It was a deliberate and sophisticated targeting and grooming of children who were easily manipulated."
She said the children were all primary school pupils.
He also abused children he was babysitting for friends.
Griffin admitted 13 counts of sexual assault of children under 13 and one of false imprisonment. He was jailed today for six years.
More than 20 parents and family friends were in Cardiff Crown Court as Griffin, wearing a casual LA-brand T-shirt showed no reaction when he was jailed.
The court heard Griffin had shown "genuine remorse" over his abuse.
Sentencing Griffin, Patrick Curran QC said: "This involved the grossest breach of trust.
"You adopted a method of selecting certain parents and certain children and targeted and groomed the children who were vulnerable .
"Each child has been profoundly affected by someone they trusted and each parent profoundly affected after the trust they had placed in you."
Griffin was made the subject of a sexual harm prevention order which bars him from having contact with anyone under the age of 18 and made to sign a sexual offenders register.
He will serve six years in a young offenders institution.
After being sentenced for his foot sex fetish, police described him as a "dangerous offender."
Detective Sergeant Annalisa Bartley said: "As a result of today's proceedings, a dangerous and manipulative sex offender has been brought to justice.
"This was a particularly serious case as Luke Griffin abused a position of trust to deceive decent, trusting people in order to gain access to their children.
"Today's sentence is the result of a lot of hard work from a number of agencies, so today I speak on behalf of them all, in commending all of the families affected by Griffin's crimes, for their outstanding support during what has been such a difficult time for them.
"They have been on a harrowing journey, having to listen to and try to come to terms with what their children have been though. But, they have conducted themselves with utmost dignity and self-discipline.
"Most of all, we must focus on the child victims in this case. Despite being so young and often very frightened, they have shown remarkable bravery in coming forward and giving their evidence. It is because of their courage that Luke Griffith is behind bars today."
Wendy Brady, Senior Crown Prosecutor for the Crown Prosecution Service Cymru-Wales Rape and Serious Sexual Offences Unit, said: "Luke Griffin abused a position of trust by repeatedly sexually assaulting children in his care.
"He was trusted to escort his young victims to sports events, but instead he took the opportunity to abuse them.
"His particular foot fetish was described by a number of his victims and the similarities in their accounts added to the strength of the evidence against him.
"I hope that today's sentencing will be of some comfort to his young victims as well as their families, who continue to support them in dealing with the effects of Griffin's actions."
