Child pageants are still really popular. Love 'em or hate 'em, parents can't help but gasp in horror at some of the pictures of the little girls competing against each other.
Sticky, tacky lipstick smeared on young, innocent lips; lipstick drawn on beyond the natural border of the girl's lips; and eyeshadow and mascara glopped on smooth, young and poreless skin, making a four-year-old look much more (ahem) mature than she really is.
Oh, my God! Rather than looking like the sweet, innocent beauty she is, a contestant looks like... well, to be charitable, an 18-year-old debutante who has no clue about the world.
Even beyond the stage makeup, look at the hair! Wow! Poufy, teased hair that reminds people of the "big-hair" days of the 80s and 90s. These little girls, who are probably just competing for a few hundred or thousand dollars, don't look like they enjoy what's been done to their faces and hair. Who knows?
Seeing how a little girl ends up looking like an 18-year-old is more than just creepy and disturbing. Knowing who's out there, just waiting to prey on children, the idea of making them look older than their years is frightening.
Looking at some images, viewers may wonder, "Where did the child go? All that's there now is the image of a pint-sized 'adult.'" Creepy! If someone is looking for a kid to molest, this is the perfect scenario, and it's really pretty scary.
Even though the makeup may be pastel, it's practically slapped on with a garden trowel. Lipstick on a child should be more like tinted lip balm and it shouldn't extend the natural outline of the lips, either.
Look at the little girl's eyelashes. She's not wearing false eyelashes, thankfully. But so much mascara was put on, her eyes look like they belong on a high-school junior. Looking at the eyeliner, that was professionally done. Hmmm, one wonders. . . do the "parents" of these girls hire professional makeup artists so as to give their children a bigger advantage?
What sane-minded, thinking parent would believe it's a good idea to put a toddler into a costume with a. . a cone bra? A la Madonna? (Yes, that Madonna.) In no world that values children should this ever happen!
Yes, for this one, you might be screaming, "This is beyond disturbing," and you'd be spot-on. This little girl is two. Run that through your mind. Two! Why would her parents put her into such an adult costume? She should be wearing a little-girl frilly dress with little girl shoes and a pair of frilly short socks.
Little Mia donned a Madonna outfit on "Toddlers and Tiaras."
This sweet toddler doesn't seem to have makeup on. But her costume definitely puts her image into the "creepy" category. Gimme the eye bleach, please.
I need the eye bleach again. Seriously, this little girl, five years old at most, has been outfitted in a form-fitting dress that looks more suitable for a woman in her thirties. (Try Dolly Parton.) Yikes! What's her fake chest measurement? No, let's not go there. As it turns out, her mother may have lost custody of this child for stuffing her bra and panties for "Toddlers and Tiaras."
Makeup next. Her eyeshadow and mascara are more appropriate for a young woman, not a preschooler. Her blush, like an earlier example, appears intended to slenderize a rounded, young face. And the foundation looks like it was caked on with a shovel. Maybe to "even out her complexion?"
Finally, what is with the wig? It's white! It's bouffant, like the hairstyles of the 1960s. Where is the little girl that's competing? Bring her out!
Seriously, this is the thought you'll get. This pint-sized competitor is all decked out in bright-pink and purple feather boas. Her entire costume is wider than she is tall! Is it any wonder she's so unhappy?
It's not just the costume. Her hair is a hot mess. It looks like mama or her hairstylist went wild with the curls and hairspray. Thankfully, her makeup is a bit more. . . restrained, shall we say?
The biggest issue is with that chorus-girl costume. Again, a little girl who's in preschool should be wearing a frilly, little-girl dress with frilly short socks and dressy Mary Janes. Comb her hair into a fancy French braid and, at the most, put some tinted lip balm on her lips. Let her natural beauty shine through!
Why do so many of these creepy child beauty contest photos have little girls whose smiles look so forced? Do they realize their mothers have (pardon the term) tricked them out to look at least twenty years older than they are? Or do they have problems smiling naturally because they feel all the slimy goop sliding off their lips?
It's hard to say. The little sweetie in this image has a smile that doesn't reach her eyes. She doesn't look happy. First, her hair is put up into a curly updo that looks painful. (Oh, the headache she'll have.)
Her makeup is just too much. Too much blush, lipstick, eyeshadow and mascara. At least her eyebrows haven't been plucked. Yet. Well, at least her pageant costume is age-appropriate. Or at least it approaches age-appropriate.
Some child pageant contestants look like they're competing for the state of Texas or California, say for Miss USA or Miss America. They have long hair that's been combed and teased out into an unnatural up-do.
Imagine, if you can, an elementary school student wearing a dress that would better suit a young adult woman - let alone a tight-fitting bathing suit that exposes the child's shoulders, arm, legs, and overall figure.
The makeup screams "Desperate! My mommy is desperate for me to win!" Looking at her, an audience member could be excused for thinking she's twenty-seven, not seven. If the little girl got a look at her image after her makeup was slathered on, she can be forgiven for looking just as miserable as she feels.
"She's a little girl. . . but her dress! Her hair and her makeup all say, 'I'm really twenty-one, not eight.'" Children's beauty pageants have gotten way out of control with the "beauty" standards that little girls, preschoolers and even toddlers are expected to meet (or even exceed).
While some little girls may sport dresses that do not look like ball gowns in miniature, they are still obviously pretty expensive. Is there not another way for the parents to "save up for her college fund?" What is the reasoning behind these pageants?
While the child may have a smile on her face, you may be able to spot her spirit in her eyes. That spirit is screaming, "Get me out of here!"
Oh my god, that precious baby! You may not be saying that in admiration. You are not to be blamed. A little girl competing may still be in pre-school. But she looks like she could be in middle school or high school. With the addition of the fake nails, she could be a pint-sized college coed.
A little girl made up to look as though she is ten, twelve or even twenty years older than she is can frighten pageant-goers. For sure, the disturbance factor is off the charts. The blush is dark on her rounded cheeks. The eyeshadow looks like it belongs on an adult woman's face. And those nails! That is way overboard! Can we say, "creepy?"
Not only did the parent of these adorable twins sexualize one child, they sexualized her twin as well. The big hair, make, and outfits on both of these girls is something that only a thirty or forty-year-old should attempt. The ringlets are overkill.
And look at that makeup! ERMAGERD! How many layers of lipstick were troweled on? Why did their "makeup artist" choose such bright blush? Coordinating the eyeshadow to the blush was the low in transforming these girls into truckstop. . . you get it.
Looking at these twins, it's easy to see they still have all their baby teeth. This means they're still in kindergarten. MAYBE first grade. This one has an ick factor of x10.
Getting back to the Big Hair look, some little girls look unnaturally, well, "old." One little girl may be no more than five or seven years old, but she looks like she could be a Junior Julia Sugarbaker, from "Designing Women."
What is worse is her eye makeup. . . a pedophile could look at her and think, "Hey, she's giving me the come-on!" The eyeshadow is dark on her upper lids, extending out to the sides of her eyes. The mascara on her lashes creates even more of an illusion that this little girl is an adult in a miniature disguise.
Her lipstick is a little more restrained, but this still gives a "Julia Sugarbaker" vibe.
You're forgiven for having that thought. From the cubic-zirconia earrings and the piled-up adult hairdo, to the way-too-mature makeup, this sweet little girl looks anything but!
If you remember what Tammy Faye Bakker looked like when her husband's ministry imploded, you'll get the reference. Her eyelashes look like spider legs. The ick factor is crawling in a huge way. The lipstick is something meant for a real adult. Even worse, it's been slathered onto those little girl lips, making her look like a baby. . . a baby streetwalker. And the blush! The naturally rounded contours of her face should be allowed to show! Instead, it looks like someone tried to slim out her little face.
Such a pretty girl without makeup. If her parents could only hear the sad whispers. Because, once they slap the makeup on her, she begins to resemble a hollow-eyed horror movie actress. Look closely at the area around her eyes. Her blush is put on so high that it surrounds the outer corners of both eyes.
Even worse, her eye makeup emphasizes this impression. The eyeliner and mascara are more obvious, with her eyeshadow taking backstage.
And her hair. She looks like someone wanted her to look like Shirley Temple. This would be wonderful, if it weren't for all the makeup. She may sense that as well. She looks tentative and shy. Her smile isn't genuine.
This little contestant's dress and hair are adorable. Mostly. The ringlets covering her forehead aren't well-formed. She looks frightened, with those huge eyes lined all the way around with black eyeliner. (Why anyone thought that was a look for a woman, let alone a little girl . . .) This sweet little girl has been turned into a caricature of herself!
Her lovable cheeks are plastered with pink blush. She's trying not to cry and take off. What would she do for the talent portion of the competition? Why not just let this little cherub's natural sweetness and beauty shine through? Her smile is plastered on, not natural. It looks like she wants to run off the stage.
