With a colorful cast of characters that are easy to love, it's difficult to combat that feeling of dread knowing a favorite may die at any moment.
The Danganronpa series has both delighted and terrified players since its debut on the PlayStation Portable in 2010. Originally a Japan-only release, before being fully localized for the PlayStation Vita, the series has since been released on the PlayStation 4, PC, and the Nintendo Switch. Each Danganronpa game tells the tale of a group of high school students, each with an immense level of talent in a specific discipline (ex: the Ultimate Nurse or Ultimate Fanfic Creator). They attend Hope's Peak Academy, an elite school designed to hone and grow those talents. For unknown reasons by the hidden mastermind , they are forced to kill one another to survive in a Battle Royale-style game. Every time a student dies, the remaining students are forced to undergo a Class Trial where they debate and work through whodunit. If the killer successfully deceives their classmates, they get to escape and live out the rest of their days while the remaining students are killed. If they're caught, only they get punished.
With a setup like that, it's easy to be on edge throughout. And with a colorful cast of characters that are easy to love, it's difficult to combat that feeling of dread knowing a favorite may die at any moment. Whenever a death does occur, it doesn't get any less heartbreaking. While the future of the series is currently unknown , its continually growing fandom should ensure that more heartbreaking deaths will come eventually.
Danganronpa: Ultra Despair Girls is different from its mainline counterparts. Whereas the main series is told through a visual novel format, Ultra Despair Girls is a third-person shooter set between the first two games. Ultra Despair Girls reunites players with some of the survivors of the original game while also introducing characters directly related to the cast of the original. Among those is Yuta Asahina, the younger brother of the Ultimate Swimming Pro Aoi Asahina.
After the Towa City Bridge is destroyed, leaving no escape from Towa City, Yuta swims out in order to find help. In the process, the Monokuma bracelet he was forced to wear starts beeping prior to exploding. Killing him. What makes Yuta's death so heartbreaking is that he never was able to reunite with his sister Aoi, nor do we ever get a chance to see her reaction.
With a premise like Danganronpa's , it might be difficult to buy into it at first. Players are typically used to expendable "red shirts" being killed off instead of popular fan favorites. Spike Chunsoft quickly dispelled any notion of that with its very first murder in Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc .
Sayaka Maizono, the Ultimate Pop Sensation, was introduced as a middle school peer of protagonist Makoto Naegi. Though they never associated with each other prior, they quickly grew to become close friends. A friendship that was short-lived as Sayaka would tragically be killed shortly after setting the tone for the series.
One of the most brilliant aspects of the series is that the characters aren't fully defined by their special talents. Few emphasize that more than Ryoma Hoshi, the Ultimate Tennis Pro, in Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony . Ryoma's past is filled with associations with an organized crime, against his will, before becoming a convicted murderer in an attempt to escape from that life.
Ryoma's personality is depicted as distant while feeling like he has little reason to live, making him very easy to sympathize with. When his last bit of hope for finding a reason to live had been dash, Ryoma allowed himself to be killed.
Gonta Gokuhara, the Ultimate Entomologist, quickly became a fan favorite with his wholesome personality and Tarzan-like backstory. Since his introduction, fans dreaded the possibility of his demise. Very few fans, however, could've imagined the possibility that he would be the culprit of a murder. The Class Trial plays into this by slowly building up the characters', and players', despair that this was the case. Cutting each and every strand of hope along the way until the outcome is accepted.
To make this all the more heartbreaking was that Gonta was deceived and manipulated into committing the murder, to the point where even Gonta didn't know he was the culprit. Makes the entire ordeal feel incredibly unfair.
Each Danganronpa game has a few close allies to the main protagonist that stick around for the majority of the game. One of those characters was Kaito Momota, the Ultimate Astronaut. Despite being the Ultimate Astronaut, he had actually never been to space. His optimism given his circumstances, his faith in his friends, and his dream to finally reach space culminated in his death.
In a bizarre case where the victim is unknown, thus the killer could only be one of two people, a disguised Kaito was ultimately found guilty. The goal behind the murder was to break the game by creating an unsolvable murder where even the mastermind had no idea what occurred. For his punishment, he would be launched up to space. However, Kaito would succumb to his illness before the execution was fully executed. Before his death, he lived long enough to finally reach space and gaze upon Earth.
Much like Ryota Hoshi, Gundham Tanaka comes equipped with a personality starkly different from his special talent (the Ultimate Breeder). Gundham boasts a dark, eccentric, and delusional personality. Despite that, he was often utilized as comic relief making a quick fan favorite in Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair .
Gundham is accompanied by four well-trained and adorable hamsters he refers to as his Dark Devas of Destruction. These hamsters would aid Gundham in committing murder. Upon being found guilty, he and presumably his associates were punished.
Coming from the death of Sayaka, players wondered if they were going to be given a break. That was not the case as the second murder would hit fans even harder than the first with the death of the innocent Chihiro Fujisaki, the Ultimate Programmer.
Chihiro, previously bullied for being seen as weak and unmanly, started dressing and identifying as a girl. When forced to use the boy's locker room, due to being a biological male, Chihiro was initially worried about his secret being exposed. He later found the strength to accept who he is and intended to reveal his secret with the help of Mondo Owada. It was his strength that ultimately befell him as Mondo grew jealous of Chihiro's strength.
How one is treated matters. No case emphasized that more than the killing of Sakura Ogami, the Ultimate Martial Artist, in the original game. Sakura was initially a spy for Monokuma, but after growing close to her classmates, she chose to break off the alliance. Before Sakura could confess to her classmates, Monokuma revealed it first. This left Sakura with few friends, and some classmates plotting her death.
When her closest friend, Aoi, was hurt in an incident, Sakura decided that she would appease Monokuma's desire for another victim - by killing herself in hopes to save her friends.
No death in the series was more unexpected than that of Kaede Akamatsu, the Ultimate Pianist, in the third game. Players were under the belief that Kaede was the protagonist of the game, and that they would be playing as her throughout. Shockingly, it was revealed that Kaede was the culprit of the first murder.
Kaede committed the murder believing the victim was the mastermind, hoping to end the killing game before it ever took off. Even more heartbreaking was that it was later revealed that, despite her attempt, Kaede wasn't even the true culprit of the case.
Upon her debut in the second game, Chiaki Nanami, the Ultimate Gamer, quickly rose to become arguably the biggest fan favorite in the series. With her lackadaisical attitude, her affinity for gaming, and her usefulness in Class Trials, many players hoped that she would survive to the end. Chiaki, however, was executed for a killing orchestrated by the victim in which not even the killer knew they committed the murder. This was done through pure luck in hopes that the class would vote for the wrong culprit leaving Chiaki to survive.
Fans who were also excited to see the non-A.I. counterpart of Chiaki in the anime Danganronpa 3: The End of Hope's Peak Academy were also left heartbroken in an attempt to save her friends from becoming the Remnants of Despair. Two heartbreaking deaths for a single character.
Michael is a list writer for CBR who has been gaming for as long as he can remember. Some of his favorite series include Uncharted, Final Fantasy, the Legend of Zelda, and Mario Kart. Beyond gaming, he's a big fan of his beloved Detroit sports teams, for better and for worse.
