One of Chick Corea's most personal moments, and one of the greatest of all 70's jazz fusion albums. The musicianship and originality of the whole project is one of a kind. A must have. Read More

This 1976 release features Chick Corea in what was then, and remains, a unique musical setting. While it is truly an electric jazz fusion record, it is also Corea's first solo recording to attempt to address the Latin side of his musical heritage. My Spanish Heart marks a full-scale, yet thoroughly modern, exploration in the musical lineage Corea sprang from. Making full use of synthesizer technology, a string section, and synth-linked choruses -- of two voices, his own and that of Gayle Moran -- as well as percussionist Don Alias , drummer Steve Gadd , a full brass section, and the sparse use of Jean Luc Ponty ("Armando's Rumba") and bassist Stanley Clark , Corea largely succeeded in creating a Spanish/Latin tapestry of sounds, textures, impressions, and even two suites -- "Spanish Fantasy" and "El Bozo." The string quartet performs its intricate and gorgeously elegant arrangements with verve and grace on "Day Danse" and on the suites, with Corea's contrapuntal pianism creating a sharp yet warm contrast to the shifting tempos, wild interval leaps, and shimmering timbral balances that occur. The only pieces that sound dated on this double-album-length set are the fusion pieces, which are, with their production and knotty stop-and-start modulations and key signature equations -- complete with aggressive arpeggios and scalar linguistics -- destined to be limited in expression by the voice of their use of technology. Thus, "Love Castles," "The Gardens," and "Night Streets" suffer from their rather cheesy production despite their tastefully done double fusion semantics (jazz to rock to Latin music). There is no doubt that Corea's musicianship was up to any task he chose at this point in time. Simply put, he was compositionally and intellectually at the top of his game, and this record, despite the many of his that haven't aged well, still surprises despite its production shortcomings.

So incredibly musical. Beautifully written. While not as musically experimental, this is a masterpiece. If limited to five, my desert island collection would include this recording, Jarrett’s, Köln; Ashkenazy’s performance of Bach’s The Well-Tempered Clavier. For a female vocalist I’d choose either Patricia Barber’s A Fortnight In France, Joni Mitchell’s Miles of Aisles or Diana Krall’s Live in Paris. The fifth would be really a tough choice: Pink Floyd’s DSOTM would probably win out. I love albums with tracks that flow from one to the next. I love well-recorded music , with a minimum of editing —live or at least with all of the musicians in the room together.... I run from the room when it’s poor. The track with just Steve Gadd on drums and Chick on acoustic piano and synth overdubs, Spanish Fantasy Part II, I’ve listened to several hundred times. I wish I hadn’t lost my original CD, so I wouldn’t have needed to buy this replacement. I have the vinyl, purchased when it first came out. I hope to find my original as I think it was a better recording.

This is one of my favorite Chick Albums. Had it on CD but needed it on vinyl. As for the seller, fantastic! I actually received this under a week. Never happens with sellers. Very happy.

Even the positive reviews of "My Spanish Heart" apologize for the electric piano, and it seems to be the main reason for most of the negative reviews. I can see how someone might be turned off by the comparatively harsh tone versus the warm timbre of an acoustic piano. However I think some have made the mistake of thinking that the synthesizer is nothing more than an artifact of '70s production. They're overlooking the reason Corea, Herbie Hancock, and other pianists use it, which is that they can produce a huge range of sounds that simply aren't possible on an acoustic piano. No one seems to be debating Corea's talent as a composer, so if you like other Chick Corea albums and enjoy the electric piano as an instrument in its own right, you'll like "My Spanish Heart," too. If you can't get past the artificial sound of the synthesizer, this is probably not for you. However, I would encourage you to give it a try. If you can appreciate the relatively mellower sounds of "Light as a Feather", which also makes heavy use the synth, you should be able to stretch a little bit and get into this as well. There's so much creativity in the way Corea uses the instrument, it would be a shame to overlook it because it doesn't sound like a piano.

Excellent collection of music. UPS dropped the ball on the delivery 😡

Always a fan of CC. This truly brings out the best of his cultural side of compositions. Very expressive on his use of phrasing. It seems to express a lot of joy and happiness throughout. Can be listened to over and over.

I received this album as a Christmas gift when it was released. It's good to have it again in a remastered expanded edition. This may not be considered a traditional jazz album as opposed to say Three Quartets but who cares except for the jazz critics. I love the variety and the musical colors of this album. Can't recommend it enough!

Loved this as an LP, still have it, but don't have a turntable set up. Chick is an excellent musician and composer. He can play classical with the best pianists, and his chops in jazz blow me away. This is like a combo of jazz, Spanish influence and 20th century programmatic music. Love it.

This has always been a favorite. The themes that Corea develops throughout this recording are as fresh today as they were in 1976.

One of Chick's finest...

This is a 1976 album featuring Chick Corea on a variety of keyboards, Steve Gadd on drums, Stanley Clarke on bass, Jean Luc Ponty Violin, Don Alias Percussion as well a supporting cast of string (Arriga Quartet) and horn musicians on different tracks. The strength of the album comes from Chick Corea's writing, and although some of the keyboard sounds now sound dated, and familiar from other albums of the same era, the Spanish influence is clear to hear. "The Gardens" (track 2) starts as a mournful Jazz ballad with Piano/Bass/Violin but seamlessly becomes track 3 "Day Danse", completely with what I think are clicking heels, or possibly tap shoes. There is plenty of acoustic Piano spread over the album, which I much prefer to the other keyboards. Altho
