This post- Return to Forever Chick Corea LP is a bit of a mixed bag. Corea is heard on his many keyboards during an atmospheric "The Woods," interacts with a string section on "Tweedle Dee," features a larger band plus singer Gayle Moran on a few other songs and even welcomes fellow keyboardist Herbie Hancock for the "Mad Hatter Rhapsody." The most interesting selection, a quartet rendition of "Humpty Dumpty" with tenorman Joe Farrell set the stage for his next project, Friends . Overall, this is an interesting and generally enjoyable release.

I have been listening to Chick for 5 decades now. His recordings with Steve Gadd we're an embellishment for the drummer's career. Chick's intimate story telling mixed well even when the music goes into an up tempo frenzy.
This project is the icing on the '70's fusion jazz cake. The best fusion projects are The Romatic Warrior and the Mad Hatter. I can not leave out the My Spanish Heart Project which also topped the jazz charts of that era. Gayle Moran added her vocal flair on the Mad Hatter project that I enjoyed listing to at the Greek Amphitheater in Hollywood, CA. He and his orgestra finished their world tour at the Greek which featured not only the Mad Hatter Project, but most of the RTF Song Book. If the Amphitheater had a roof, the band would have raised it. This Project tells a musical story that is very creative and technically sound. This project features musical arrangements can be studied by all musicans, regardless of their skill level. Once I have purchased this project, my collection of the three most powerful fusion projects of all times will be complete.

I was turned on to this album by a review of a Music Hall turntable in Stereophile. The reviewer (Robert Reina) remarked about this album which came out in his formative years and he always liked it because "Corea takes his group through so many acoustic and electronic textures that it's easy to unravel the subtleties of a stereo system." He's right. The record reaches deep into the bass up to the upper sonic ranges. And it all sounds great.
My all time favorite by Chic Correa. A story line a bass line and pure genius .
Chick Corea seems to have a solo career that frequently borders on the inconsistent side. With that in mind, the Mad Hatter is nowhere NEAR his worst offering even though side one is the reason I'm not blown away here. "The Woods" is decent enough. A moody, almost ambient jazzy piece. I admire this song quite a bit. "Humpty Dumpty" is where my positive feelings quickly deteriorate. There's several types of jazz out there that appeal to me, but this isn't one of them. A fast-moving, typical jazzy rhythm that's instrumentally dazzling perhaps, but the lack of memorable notes severely hampers it. Not to mention it's predictable jazz (though considering 1978 didn't really have "typical jazz" yet, I can forgive this one). You have a saxophone that's played at lightning speed and that alone is impressive enough of course, and the piano and especially the bass guitar are neat additions as well, but... that's it. I can't actually remember any of these notes and that's disappointing. "Falling Alice" has a cliched operative vocal style that I've heard from plenty of lead singers, including most recently that of the progressive metal band Nightwish. However again, just like with the saxophone solo from "Humpty Dumpty", this type of familiarity wasn't a common overexposed nuisance back in 1978 so I can't criticize it in that regard. Instead I can only say that the vocal melody is just fairly forgettable. Great synth jam though, and a sax solo that's just as impressive. Side two is awesome however. "Dear Alice" is the *best* *song* *ever*, haha. Over 12 minutes of instrumental passages and ALL the notes stick with me. I can remember and enjoy every moment of this splendid track with 100% ease. I love it! The bass guitar solo is scorching in excitement and innovative perfection, the flute solos are highly enjoyable, and the piano work blows me clean off the face of the map as well. Jsut an all around sensational song. "The Mad Hatter Rhapsody" is almost as fantastic. A synth jam that would easily fit in as part of the many Price Is Right themes (TV game show for those who don't know) and the many layers the song goes through over its 10-minute span including a few highly exceptional Spanish themes is another richly rewarding aspect. Just wonderful. Side two is clearly the superior side, without question. Of course many of you WILL question it, won't you? Well fine!
I have been listening to this over and over again since I bought it for the first time from a "cut out" bin in a record store when vinyl wasn't just for collectors. Wore out the vinyl more than once, and have burned many bytes listening to this since. This is the intersection of jazz, fusion, modern classical, rock, and world music by one of the geniuses to come out of the 60s & 70s jazz/fusion community. Like many works of art it may take a few listenings to get it, but once you do you can learn something new and beautiful every time you listen to it.
Chick's best album ever. Gayle's soaring vocals; beautiful orchestration; the late great, Joe Farrell (every note means something); original release of the now classic Humpty Dumpty - this song alone is worth the price of admission - wonderful improv, with Steve Gadd at his best; Eddie Gomez, all playing together at the highest level. a thematic, magical album with plenty of Chick's signature Spanish modalities; versatility with hints of classical piano runs and arpeggios, Latin rhythms, counterpoint, some baroque orchestration, etc. I just want the The Mad Hatter Rhapsody to never, ever end. i bought this album when it first came out. I was 16 years old, and was enraptured by it, over, and over and over. I went so far as to experience it while on LSD - unforgettable.
Freakin awesome! One of his best. This and Leprechuan.

One of Chick Corea's different albums. He has done some amazing work being a great jazz pianist, complementing Herbie Hancock in earlier albums with piano duets etc. to albums such as My Spanish Heart and the well known Light as a Feather where Flora Purim and Stanley Clarke were very apparent. H
