As 2021 nears its end it’s time to commemorate the passing of one of the greatest heroes of American Jazz, keyboardist / composer / bandleader Chick Corea, who sadly passed in February this year. This is the last studio album by Corea, recorded with an octet, which includes also drummer Marcus Gilmore, bassist Carlitos Del Puerto, saxophonist / flautist Jorge Pardo, guitarist Nino Josele, trombonist Steve Davis, trumpeter Michael Rodrigues and percussionist Luisito Quintero. Tap dancer Nino de los Reyes and vocalists Ruben Blades, Gayle Moran and Maria Bianca also appear on selected tracks. The album re-visits Corea’s compositions from the albums “My Spanish Heart” and “Touchstone”, presents two newly composed pieces for this album and also two pieces by other composers (Paco de Lucia and Antonio Carlos Jobim) and finally a short treatment of a Classical composition, together eleven tracks. The music is distinctly more Latin oriented that the original albums, taking it somewhat away from the Jazz facet and deeply into the grooves and rhythms of Spanish, Cuban, Brazilian and other areas of Latin music, all beautifully arranged, orchestrated and performed by these splendid musicians, under the guidance of the leader. This international team, which includes players from Cuba, Spain and American based musicians born in Latin countries, adds the authentic flavor, which was somewhat more hinted on the original albums. In the liner notes Cores says: “I might be of Italian heritage, but my heart is Spanish”, which certainly explains his adoration for the Latin zest. Although the album does not introduce anything innovative as far as Corea’s musical heritage is concerned, it certainly confirms his unique talents as composer and player, which have always been beyond reproach. Overall, this is certainly a proper document of one of the many facets of Corea’s music, which embraced a plethora of styles, genres and approaches, from Avant-Garde to Fusion, always brilliant and completely unique. His Artistry will be sadly missed and his sweet personality, to those who met him, will be always a cherished memory.
“Antidote” opens with a studio party like atmosphere. They play, sing, and dance to spread the joy everywhere. Chick’s electric piano vamps lightly to the Afro-Caribbean rhythm. Ruben Blades’s vocal bounces joyfully. It’s so fun. The Spanish Heart Band successfully toured Europe in this summer. Chick Corea’s mail magazine reports how they’re welcomed by European audience with plenty of snap shots. Nino Josele’s participation is conspicuous in characterizing the sound of this band. According to Chick’s liner notes, Josele is one of Paco De Lucia’s protege and a former member of Paco’s band. Remember his Bill Evans songbook “Paz.” “Duende” is picked up from the “Touchstone” album. Lee Konitz’s alto resonated emotionally against a chamber orchestra like soundscape in the original version. Chick carries out the early “Return To Forever” like treatment for this version. Three horn players unfold passionate solos by turns. “The Yellow Nimbus” is another tune from “Touchstone.” Paco’s dexterous play was heard at every turn. Don Alias chose a Lya drum for the original performance. Luisito Quintero’s bata drum and a dancer’s steps is remarkable on this new version. Josele performs enthusiastic solo. Chick selected two tunes from “My Spanish Heart.” The titled tune was a short solo piano piece, which had “Nocturne” like atmosphere. Gayle Moran’s choir at the ending heightened the tune’s spirituality. While preserving this feeling to “Prelude To My Spanish Heart,” Chick expands the motif. In 1976, Chick wrote his trip to Spain just before the recording re-inspired his interest in flamenco music and led to a whole new awareness of his love for the music in a postscript to the original album. He said he didn’t know what else to call that creation except, ”My Spanish Heart,” at that time. As a fusion pioneer, Chick mixes his longing feel for Europe with Afro-Caribbean rhythms and sonorities. Chick reveals a Ruben’s song part is added at the last moment of this recording. “Armando’s Rhumba” is one of Chick’s party trick pieces. He recorded this tune at various occasions. In the original version, Jean Luc Ponty’s violin produces a flavor, typical for a street performance. Intro-part of this version has an image of a cute mouse scurrying around, and the band gradually changes their playing style. It’s like a carnival band procession. Then there comes a Brazilian rhythm. Chick tells us a meaning of “Desafinade,” as slightly out of tune. Maria Bianca’s voicing is the most suitable for this Jobim’s song. “Zyryab” is originally recorded with Paco De Lucia in 1990. The tune is named after Ziryab, a Persian and Black African poet/musician in the 9th century, who is credited with introducing to Spain the Persian lute, later to become the Spanish guitar. Every performer takes a fiery solo in turn. Their zest arouse the sensation we are hearing this at a certain live house in Andalucia. “Pas De Deux,” played with Carlitos Del Puerto, has a similar feel with “Waltz For Debby.” It becomes a prelude to the closing “Admiration.” Chick’s point is explicit and clear through the album. Most of all, delightful music regales our ears.
Another excellent album by Maestro Corea! Chick is the greatest living jazz composer and since I know he doesn’t like genres, let’s say he’s one of the best composers of music in the world. Moreover he always finds top talent among jazz (and in this case flamenco) players to create beautiful music and an excellent recording (go Bernie). If you don’t like Latin flavored music then you might not like this but if you can recall the days of Dizzy Gillespie and his Latin influenced bands then you should enjoy this album. Also the song My Spanish Heart is so lyrical and beautiful it should be on the radio - wonderful singing by Ruben Blades too! Lastly check out the excellent Amazon Prime video of the making of this album. Just search Chick Corea and you’ll find it - it is truly the Antidote we need.

Spanish Heart revisited - not just a reminder, but a great part 2
Like a fine wine, Chick Corea just seems to get better with age. This album is a worthy successor to My Spanish Heart - just as good in its different (but the same) ways as that great album which has always been a firm favourite of mine. He has put together a truly great new band, and the empathy and interplay make it sound like they’ve been together for years. They clearly had a blast in the studio, and this recording captures both the spontaneity of improvisation and the structure of composition that is a Chick Corea hallmark. Underpinned by Corea’s fantastic playing he goes to familiar places with Spanish and Latin themes, and new spaces and vibes. I hear echoes and references to great Spanish music of all kinds. Jorge Pardo on flute and saxophone adds great touches, the flamenco inspired guitar of Nino Josele is masterful in interweaving with Chick’s piano, the brass section are great, the rhythm section are always on point with all the changes - tight for the compositional parts, loose for the improvisational sections. The reworking of My Spanish Heart and Armando’s Rhumba are great and add layers. The new compositions are excellent and ambitious and fresh. I don’t want to pick favourites, because they all highlight Chick’s constant evolution as a writer. Antidote it maybe, but more good medicine that adds to his great history. Essential.

Chic: a proper legend in the true sense of the word
What a fabulous album. Chic still has it...and he ain't going to lose it now. What an inspiration to the younger generation of jazz musicians coming up. I've only given it 4 * instead of 5 because some tracks do tend to meander without direction (if that's not a tautology); but this is a minor criticism; there's some absolutely gorgeous flute playing on this album. And as for the Flamenco clapping and percussion; marvellous! And let's not forget that Chic is the finest...not just one of the finest...Fender Rhodes player ever; Period! Full stop! Punto! Just listen to his Fender chords on Desafinado. Sublime! Chic, you are a real treasure and long may you continue to produce music like this Thank you

I bought this after seeing him Live
I have a few Chick Corea albums in my collection which I rarely play not sure why but I doubt. However I saw him and his Spanish Heart Band live at a Jazz music festival and they were amazing. He's a legend but he looks oh so young. This album doesn't disappoint as it's all that I imagined beautiful Spanish infused latin melodies played by an awesome band. I have two complaints I would rather hear Rueben Blades sing in his native tongue Spanish, so why the English vocals? Secondly Desafinado sounds so out of place as it just doesn't fit within the album at al as it's a Portuguese song on a Spanish influenced album. I must dig out my old Chick Corea albums and give them a good play once I've finished with this album.

Top latin jazz
this is a beautifully made album,top musicianship throughout.lovely latin percussion and gorgeous spanish guitar as well as Chick Corea's acoustic and electric piano.I was a bit concerned early on the first track when the singer sings briefly in English but it is mercifully quickly over when he reverts to Spanish.

Joyful, flexible and heart warming jazz
Having seen him live play this, I was sort of expecting a flat version of his live sets. However this album is fab. The interplay between the musicians is great, the recording quality is vivid, and the lyricism of Chick is all over this. I heartily recommend this album, which is real jazz where the improvisations make sense and the rhythms are complex
